About the host
Hosted by Laura K. Benton
Mountain Adventure Retreats was founded on a deep-rooted passion for the San Juan Mountains and a shared commitment to excellence in hospitality and property care. The venture began in 2013, sparked by Laura’s long-standing love for Ouray County. A lifelong Coloradan who first discovered the Ridgway and Ouray area in 2001, Laura brought with her an extensive background in business, marketing, and travel management. Her years of experience in the ski and property management industries across North America’s premier destinations provided the foundation for a company built on community and exceptional service.
In 2020, the team expanded when Steve moved from Dallas to join Laura in Ouray County. Steve’s arrival marked the beginning of a new chapter for the company, bringing forty-three years of high-level construction management experience to the team. Having served as Vice President for some of the nation’s top General Contractors, he integrated professional expertise in budgeting, procurement, and project oversight into the company’s property maintenance and caretaking operations. His own connection to the state dates back to 1993, when participating in Ride the Rockies ignited a lifelong passion for Colorado’s dramatic landscapes.
Today, Laura and Steve work side-by-side to lead a dedicated team of professionals focused on delivering top-tier property care. When they aren't overseeing the finer details of a guest's stay or maintaining local residences, they are often found embracing the outdoors together. Whether they are cycling, skiing, hiking, or fishing, they remain inspired by the ever-changing seasons and the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains.

Why they chose this property
Riverwalk II is a premier residential pocket in Ouray, Colorado, distinguished by its unique position along the banks of the Uncompahgre River. The neighborhood offers a sophisticated blend of high-end mountain architecture and direct access to the region's natural wonders, most notably the Uncompahgre Riverwalk Trail. Its location at the northern end of town provides a sense of seclusion while remaining within easy walking distance of the Ouray Hot Springs Pool and the historic downtown district. Residents and guests in this area enjoy a soundtrack of rushing water and dramatic, 360-degree views of the San Juan Mountains, including the towering rock walls of the Amphitheater.
The area is particularly popular with outdoor enthusiasts because it serves as a central hub for alpine recreation. Many homes in Riverwalk II are designed with the mountain lifestyle in mind, featuring ample storage for gear and proximity to the Silver-Shield Trailhead and the Perimeter Trail. During the winter months, the neighborhood’s proximity to the Ouray Ice Park makes it a sought-after location for climbers. Because it is nestled within the "Switzerland of America," the neighborhood experiences a distinctive microclimate where the dramatic play of light across the jagged peaks creates an ever-changing backdrop, making it one of the most scenic residential enclaves on the Western Slope.
