Beautiful cabin and property, well stocked with just about everything we needed from cookware to bedding to condiments. Perfectly sized for our family of four. We stayed in fall, and the wood stove and electric blanket kept us cozy. There was a variety of beach toys for our kids, and a little network of trails to explore the property. The host was very helpful with getting us set up in the cabin and suggesting activities. All in all a great experience!

This was our 2nd time staying at this property and it did not disappoint! Our family made great memories away from the demands of everyday life. We swam, fished, played games, star-gazed and watched movies. The cabin had everything we needed to cook our own meals. Thanks Dave and Peg!

Wonderful secluded cabin in the woods with everything you need. Was visited by a mother Doe and fawn two times and had a Blue Heron land in the pond.Air conditioning units lower and upper were nice for sleeping.Plenty of floats for the pond and sand toys and squirt guns for the kids.I have a 4 and 3 year old and the sand beach was absolutely perfect for them.Kids enjoyed fishing and caught lots of pan fish and also caught tad poles. Not a far drive to surrounding towns, also enjoyed hiking at Black River Falls State Forest.Would recommend to anyone that wants a quiet secluded vacation.

Great for a quiet retreat

My husband and I stayed the weekend to get away from the business of life. We loved sitting by the fire, stargazing, and listening to the owl's chatter. The bed was comfortable, and the cabin was clean and cozy. We would love to stay again!

Coming back next year!

My sister and I always take our nieces and nephews on a yearly camping trip. We thought we would try a cabin this year! It was wonderful. Didn’t have to worry about other people being intrusive. The place is beautiful and secluded, the perfect getaway to spend some quality time with the kiddos. Thank you so much!

Peaceful and secluded getaway

A wonderful place to unplug from it all and relax. Very quiet and secluded. The stars were amazing that far away from light pollution. Very clean and well maintained cabin. Peg was very quick to respond and offered ideas on local attractions, restaurants, etc. We can't wait to go back!

Charming cottage

Everything was as described! Location is peaceful and we recharged ourselves by becoming unplugged. Spent a day in LaCrosse and visited Grandad Bluff, had a Segway tour and had a dinner cruise on a riverboat. Highly recommend!

Two Camps is fantastic!

My family had a wonderful time at this cottage. We loved everything about the place. My kids spent hours catching frogs, building sand castles, kayaking, and swimming. We loved the peace and quiet. At night we would make campfires, look at the stars, or watch movies on the DVD player. Thanks for having us, Peg!

Secluded yet Close to Summer Fun

We enjoyed our time at the cabin soaking up the sun in the private pond. The kids were entertained for days. We also biked on the nearby, beautiful Elroy-Sparta trail. We visited the concert in the park on Wednesdays (Sparta) and explored a bit in the County Forest down the road. We hope to return next summer - Dave and Peg are very gracious, wonderful hosts.

Delightful weekend retreat

We spent a comfortable weekend floating in the pond, making meals, and enjoying the screened in front porch. Our kiddo caught tadpoles in a bucket and swam around the pond like a little fish in a life jacket. There is white sand on the beach, and it felt great on my feet. Later, we watched a storm roll in from the porch, and drank way too much coffee. Simply delightful.

This is the life

To quote my 10 year old grandson when we made the final driveway corner before seeing the pond and cabin, "This is the life!" He and his 7 year old brother didn't even miss their iPads, preferring instead to swim or fish in the pond. Cabin itself is a work of art, clean and comfortable, even on the day it rained heavily we enjoyed the DVD player and TV. Looking forward to making this a yearly retreat.........

Peaceful, Rustic, and Beautiful.

The property and cabin were exactly as described by the owners (better, actually). The owners were accommodating, kind, and very helpful. Nice people. It is a lovely setting for a family, or a couple who wishes a secluded, outdoor, wilderness-like experience - almost a step back in time (albeit with several more modern conveniences). It has an inviting swimming pond, and a happy feel. Not far from necessities, such as groceries and gas, but remote enough to feel like you are out in the forests of the wilderness. A very particular type of vacation, but absolutely perfect for what we wanted.

Remote and peaceful

This cabin is very remote....like in the middle of nowhere. It's great, but be ready to deal with life in the woods. We had a lot of ticks and horseflies. I also sprayed two wasp nests that had just formed in the umbrella. We caught snakes and 15 frogs during our trip, which my boys loved The swimming pond was perfect. We spent days just floating around. Be ready: it gets deep quickly! The nearby (5miles?) Evergreens Supper Club was a big disappointment, but we found a hidden gem in Black River Falls: The Wright Place. They had wonderful smoked BBQ. If you like solitude, you'll love this place.

Incredible family vacation!!!

Let me start out that this was the best family vacation we’ve been on!!! Peg was extremely helpful with ideas and tips for our family. We were looking for a very quiet place that was secluded enough where we felt we could “unplug”, but also have the comforts of home (and then some)! Our 4 year old was adopted at 26 months from an institutional setting in China, is autistic and unable to walk, brittle bones, but although it was not technically wheelchair accessible we very easily could get him from place to place. He was a completely at ease and had a BLAST he laughed all weekend and while he does not sleep well outside our home, he had no problem at this cabin! There is one bedroom with a door and we dedicated that room to him (there he also could have the temperature regulation) With the window air conditioning. I’m sure the all day swimming in the pond also contributed to a good night’s sleep tee hee. Everything you need is there too! We totally overpacked!!! Extra bug spray, life jackets, sand and water toys, movies and games, etc etc. While we didn’t need the washer, that was also an option! We did not have much cellphone reception (but I was so happy we were forced again to “unplug”)! I went for a long run the hills were tough, but it was so fun I barely noticed!! We LOVED our family bike ride down the Sparta trail and walk through the incredible (and a little spooky) old railroad tunnel. We enjoyed going to a nearby playground in Tomah and just the cute little towns. One thing we forgot to bring was a paper map so once our cell service went out it was an adventure to get to the cabin (but not hard). The bigs were almost non existent especially considering it’s attached to a pond!!! It was reassuring though that if needed we could eat still outside under the screened in porch. We LOVED the after higher energy activities by relaxing by the fire pit right up against the pond!!! The stars were incredible and the artillery fire was fun to faintly hear in the distance with the solders practicing. Will we be coming again? Yes!!!

Dave and I live in Holmen, WI. Dave retired in 2024 as a pastor at First Free Church in Onalaska. We are both from Black River Falls but have lived throughout the US and England. My dad gave me the cabin property 445 years ago and the Amish built the cabin for us 14 years ago. We used the cabin as our main residence for 2 6-month stretches in the past until we found a house to buy. I actually loved living there. It slows you down. Something really needed in today's world.

Why they chose this property

My dad purchased the property about 60 years ago. He had a Christmas tree farm nearby and built a beautiful home that you see pictured in the cabin. We hope to keep the property in our family as we all love vacationing there because it is so private and the swimming pond is spring fed and the perfect air conditioner on a hot day.

What makes this property unique

Privacy and seclusion! Comfort and quiet with a tiny sense of roughing it as the nearest convenience store is still a 4-mile drive. The aerated pond is this great big natural swimming pool that cools you off and is always fun to watch as you rest or eat on the front porch. The night skies, because there are no city lights or other residences nearby, are fantastic.
