About this property

Historic downtown designer apartment near Broad/King 30 day min private parking

Although this is a new listing for us, we have been hosting guests from around the world since 2008 in an apartment in New York City. Since then, we have managed all aspects of renting our homes in Charleston and on Folly Beach. We love making the home beautiful and ready for guests (Alecia, as a designer) and managing communication, expectations and a good experience (Lee.) The Charleston law requires that there be no rentals for shorter than 30 days in this particular historic district. And we understand, fully cooperate and know it will make renting a better experience for you, too! Rather than having the bridesmaid's or groom's parties en masse move in on a Thursday and out on a Sunday, you will have a much quieter, more mature experience in our home and area!

As this is new, we don't have ratings yet, but can assure you , we were Premiere Hosts, amassed hundreds of 5-star ratings, warm and generous reviews, welcomed guests back for return visits and made many friends over the years. We just purchased this pied a terre in 2024 to compliment a new life we are building in Italy. What better? Time in Italy and time in Charleston. We would be happy to give you a reference if you have any questions about working with us while we build our reputation again. (which we have to do with each new property, apparently! ) We do not offer auto booking as we want to be sure we can meet your expectations and know it is the best possible fit when it is a 30 day minimum rental. Reach out with any questions.

While we are living la dolce vita, we invite you to experience Charleston like a local in the heart of America's most beautiful historic city. We will leave you with a dossier of our favorite spots for food, shopping and experiencing our favorite place in the US!

Imagine enjoying a private, secure, impeccably clean apartment in the historic district of Charleston during Spring and Summer. It is filled with chic antiques but is a comfortable, casual home. The 3rd floor apartment with elevator access was originally a c. 1888 school converted into elegant condos with beautifully maintained gardens and grounds including outdoor dining area . The property is located on one of the best streets in the city, Legare Street, is locked 24/7, with secure gate-only access and one dedicated parking spot. Off-street parking is easy for guests. Should you like a weekly or bi-weekly housekeeper, ours will be happy to work with you . She has worked with us for 9 years and makes life a dream!

This unit was renovated in the past 2 years and includes original heart pine flooring, extraordinary 13 foot ceilings with a full eastern wall of 10-foot windows (watch the sun rise over the city!) and exquisite views of St. Phillips and St. Michael's steeples, making it feel like New York or Paris living, but in our beautiful Charleston setting. The kitchen includes a Sub-Zero refrigerator, Bosch dishwasher and induction range, which is remarkable for those who haven't used one. We love to cook and you will find almost everything you need for cooking. Best of all you have 3 Bialetti expresso makers and excellent electronic whipper, French Press or 1970s Chemex pot. We also celebrate the best shower we have ever had!

Although the home is legally a two-bedroom, we have converted those rooms to a suite with wide double doors to join them. The space is set up as a 1 Bedroom and a Study which can be completely closed off for work or quiet meetings. The building is mostly absentee owners so extremely quiet and includes a variety of ages from 30's - 80's.

A five minute walk to the shopping district on King Street and many of the best restaurants in Charleston such as Fig, 167 Raw, and Bin 152, Lowland Cafe. It is an easy 15 - minute walk to The Battery with its magnificent architecture and history. Still, our block of Legare Street is off the busy tourist path.

This will never be a place for parties other than quiet dinners for a small group of friends. Because of strict rules around dogs, we aren't able to allow pets. This is a place for adults over 30 who want a chic environment, security, beauty, a perfect historic location, off street parking and peace and quiet.

The apartment is perfect for a single or couple working from home or just wanting to take in the sensory pleasures of historic Charleston; the location is ideal. The 29401 zip code is considered the best in the city. We are 1/2 block "north of Broad" - a few minute walk to South of Broad one of the country's most beautiful and historically preserved neighborhoods and under 10 minutes to the sunny Colonial Lake.

Other experience within a 10 - 15 min. walk include the Charleston Library Society for interesting lectures on topics from History to Design to Fashion, all open to the public. The Gibbes Museum on Meeting Street is an influential, small local museum featuring both works representing both the historical and modern South. The Nathaniel Russell House, on Meeting , is one of America's architectural treasures. Some of the best antique and vintage shopping can be found all over Charleston!

Welcome to the South. Welcome to Charleston.

About the host

Hi! Welcome. We both grew up in the Midwest, raised families in Minneapolis. But Alecia had lived in Charleston from 1978 - 1985 and that experience never left her. In March 2014, while visiting friends in Charleston and learning about yet another ice storm in Minneapolis with a 50-car pileup on the freeway, we started looking for real estate in Charleston and found an extraordinary apartment in a C 1860 Greek Revival home. We traveled back and forth for a few years until we moved to Charleston permanently in 2017. Our life in Charleston has given us so much joy, friendships, exciting work for Alecia as a designer and our blessed adventures in real estate ! Lee has been a teacher most of his career and founded a Waldorf School in Charleston in 2015, worked as its loyal Director for eight years, then retired in 2023 so we could pursue our next dream. Italy!

We began our VRBO business in 2008 in our tiny New York City apartment and fell in love with hosting our guests. We then enjoyed renting our first home in Charleston for several years when we were traveling back and forth between Charleston and Minneapolis. We purchased a cottage on Folly Beach in 2017 and hosted guests for most of the year with many return guests over the years, our favorite compliment! We sold it in 2023 and the proceeds allowed us to purchase the amazing property in Tuscany.

Alecia loves nothing more than making a home both comfortable and beautiful. She has worked as an internationally published interior designer for over 30 years. She is known for making a home both beautiful and comfortable. Lee loves working with our guests to make the experience a memorable one. We are a great team in this way and look forward to hearing from you and possibly hosting you at our wonderful pied-a-terre in Charleston! Reach out with any and all questions!

Warm Southern regards
Alecia and Lee

Why they chose this property

The Historic District of Charleston is the first choice when living in or visiting Charleston. Alecia is a student of historic architecture and couldn't imagine living in a more beautiful place in the country for this. It is like walking in an architectural museum. Even after 18 years in Charleston, living for 17 of them in the downtown historic district, I still see something new almost every day!

What makes this property unique

Quiet, privacy and security and proximity to the most beautiful walking, historic museums and best dining and shopping in the city.
