About this property
House of the Artists on Capitol Hill - Charming 3 Bedroom Home + Private Garden
This newly renovated destination on Capitol Hill is inspired by music and the visual arts: the 2-story house includes a bright garden, dining patio, open living/dining with modern kitchen, wood-burning fireplace, French doors to the patio, 3 upstairs bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Perfect for 2 couples and kids, it is located in a very walkable neighborhood with easy access to Union Station, Eastern Market, the US Capitol, and many great restaurants.
The two floors of the house (total area of 1,200 square feet) are situated on grade level and one story above. The windows are large and provide lovely tree and landscape views that change with the seasons. The place with its south-facing garden will be all yours.
Features include: internet, central A/C, a library of books, 65" TV, audiophile hi-fi with CD, FM radio and Bluetooth, 6-seat dining table, fireplace (Duraflame provided), a gas range, a Keurig coffee maker (K-cups provided) and all the utensils you will need to cook a meal. The outdoor terrace and fountain are accessed via French doors; 18" Weber grill and a smoker with charcoal (provided),
Up a flight of stairs, you will find the 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and the washer/dryer. The largest bedroom, with a Cal King bed, includes a newly-renovated ensuite bathroom (walk in shower), a desk & chair, and a large closet. The middle bedroom has a Queen bed, a large closet, a Casio keyboard, Ludwig drum kit, and a variety of other musical instruments for the kids such as a glockenspiel! The smallest bedroom, with 2 standard twin beds in bunkbed arrangement, includes a small closet, books, legos, and toys. These 2 bedrooms share a common bathroom, also newly-renovated, with a tub and shower. Luggage racks and black-out curtains are provided in each bedroom.
While it's a great spot for kids, please note that our house is not toddler-proof. We do not have baby gates at the stairs, safety latches on the cabinets, or outlet covers.
If you have a car, there is free, convenient street parking in front of the house - one permit provided.

About the host
Hosted by Scott Kilbourn

My wife and I purchased this house in 2009 after spending 13 years in East Asia. We are architects (with an avid interest in art, photography, and music) and have been renovating and improving the property during the past 15 years. Your part of the house was built in 1976. The original house, including the north portion where we reside, was built in 1893.
Originally, we are from Maryland and New England. We have three boys – the oldest was born in Shanghai and now attends college. The younger two were born in DC and currently attend a Washington Public Charter school.
We have been active guests and hosts for many years and have greatly enjoyed getting to know folks from around the world!

Why they chose this property
A treelined, historic, and “very walkable” location (walkscore.com) with easy and pleasant pedestrian access to the Capitol, Union Station, and the great restaurants nearby and along H Street; you will join many joggers, dog walkers and school children during the day throughout the area.
Street parking is available, but Uber/Lyft services are plentiful and an easy and affordable way to get around because the main attractions are so close: the museums on the National Mall are about 2 miles away, and Reagan Airport (DCA) is 6. A Capital Bikeshare docking station is right across the street and DC Metro (Union Station) is a 15-minute walk. Multiple bus stops and the H Street Trolley are even closer. Whole Foods Market is a 10-minute walk.

What makes this property unique
Our place is well-located, and lively during the day, but peaceful and quiet at night. Our indoor space is accentuated by art, music and books. The shaded outdoor terrace and garden change with the seasons -- perfect for a morning coffee next to the bubbling fountain, or for grilling something delicious for your evening meal on the Weber.
