closeby to help you or give you local recommendations Pleasant Bay is a great place to base yourself if you want to explore the most popular part of the Cabot Trail - between Cheticamp and Ingonish (see map) - and be central to the National Park. Pleasant Bay is bordered by National Park at both entry points. It is arguably the best place to watch whales, and has four very different whales tours operating at the Pleasant Bay Harbour. Touring by boat is also a great way to explore the National Park and many miles of our uninhabited and wilderness protected areas. You may also tour the very unique Gampo Abbey Buddhist Monastery and Stupa of Enlightenment, which was built for westerners and has been host to thousands of students from all over the world and many life monastics. We enjoyed our stay and appreciated Niki’s attention to detail. The cottage is in a quiet location in the small village of Pleasant Bay which lives up to its name. Beds were comfortable, the kitchen was well appointed, and we had everything we needed to feel at home.
Comfy and close to everything in northern Cape Breton
We are a family of 4 and wanted to be close to hiking, beaches, whale watching, and Cheticamp. We got all that and more. The Old Salt Cottage was a cozy, comfortable retreat for us and an excellent home base for adventuring!
Such a lovely place to stay. Very comfortable and well equipped. We spent a lot of time on the deck and loved it - a humming bird and chipmunk visited regularly and we could enjoy the heat without getting burnt. Unfortunately all the trails in Nova Scotia were closed (fire risk) but we swam a lot at Red River beach. We had a great week.
We had a lovely stay at the Pleasant Bay cottage. It is beautifully set up and charming. It has the best appointed kitchen of all the VRBOs we have stayed at. Niki was extremely responsive and answered all our questions, as well as providing some great local info. I highly recommend the cottage.
We had a great time on our vacation! Niki was an excellent host who responded really quickly and provided very clear information. The house was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. The neighborhood was quiet and we loved the rural location. The local beach was perfect and we were able to explore most of the Cabot Trail via several day trips.
Quaint, well appointed farmhouse with modern plumbing fixtures and appliances. Centrally located to Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Rooms are small but comfortable. Everything you need is there. Lots of attention has been given to small details. Private location on low traffic road very close to the Cabot Trail. Very quiet and homey.
We enjoyed our stay in the very cute Old Salt Cottage! It was very convenient to adventures in and north of Cape Breton park. Beds were comfy. Cottage is older but well maintained and freshly updated. Gas, groceries, and other convenience stores were not as close, but we were warned (it was not hard to remember to get stuff while we were out adventuring on the Cabot Trail). We would absolutely stay here again!
It was a great stay. Excellent location just off the Cabot trail with access to the park and not a long drive to Ingonish. Highly recommend for anyone looking to explore this beautiful part of our country. The property exceeded expectations. Make sure to fuel up in cheticamp. If you are arriving via cheticamp the coop grocery store there has anything you may want.
This is truly a character home that feels like Cape Breton and so close to excellent hiking trails and spectacular scenery. It was well equipped with generous extras, quiet but close to a very good restaurant and general store. I would love to come back and spend more time.
Host has it going on like on assembly line - everything ready, everything precise made it easy to navigate thru the rental.
Well decorated and comfortable.
Host kind.
Thank you.
Clean, Adorable, Comfortable, Spacious and Complete with whole beans and a coffee grinder!
Great place for “home base” along the Trail. We will be back for sure :)
Lovely clean home and accommodated six people very comfortably. Everything we required was there. The owner couldn't have been more helpful in providing directions, ideas for things to do (loved the secret beach spot!) and lots of hints and tips. Would love to go back one day!

My favourite place on the Cabot Trail
I have been visiting the Cabot aTrail now for close to 20+ years and by far my favourite place on the Trail is Pleasant Bay! The scenery here is amazing, water, mountains, rivers, whales, eagles, open vistas and tons of fresh air! Our group stayed at the Old Salt Cottage and we will be back again, and again! If you are looking for a truely Canadian experience - this exceptional clean, cozy cabin - surrounded by mountains is as good as it gets! Make sure to take a moment and soak it all in from the front porch...you may just never want to leave. Thanks Niki for allowing us to stay at your amazing place! As mentioned, we’ll be back...hopefully sooner than later

Peaceful and beautiful place to stay!
Niki and Jeremy were very welcoming. They left lots of instructions and helpful tips for things to see and do in the area. The house was very comfortable and in a good location to access activities such as whale watching and hiking trails. Thank you for a lovely stay!
