About this property

The Stonemason - A Private Catskill Winter Escape in the Woods close to Kingston

Escape the city's hustle and unwind in the inviting embrace of The Stonemason, a beautifully renovated 1701 Dutch colonial home. Located just an hour and forty-five minutes north of NYC, this charming retreat lies nestled in the heart of the Catskills, between the picturesque towns of Kingston, Rosendale, and Stone Ridge.
The property was designed and built by a team heavily involved in venerable NYC restaurant spaces including Balthazar, Pastis, Minetta Tavern and the Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn. There was a lot of attention paid to detail. The same was built using passive house techniques and is very close to carbon neutral incorporating photo voltaic panels and geothermal heat&cooling.

As you drive up the pathway, you'll find yourself immersed in a serene, pastoral setting spread across 7 acres of rolling lawns and forest. Stroll up the softly illuminated stone path to the historic stone house, which boasts a mid-century modern glass addition at the back. This home has been meticulously restored, retaining its original chestnut beams, hickory floors, and limestone walls, while incorporating all the modern amenities you need for a comfortable stay.

On the ground floor, you'll discover a fully-equipped, eat-in kitchen featuring stunning raspberry-swirled marble countertops, shaker cabinets, and a Bertazzoni oven—a chef’s dream for crafting delicious meals for family and friends. The adjacent sunroom, with its original stone walls and Italianate checkerboard floors, provides the perfect backdrop for entertaining, with a table that seats 10-12 people and floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of the forest and expansive grounds. After your meal, cozy up with a good book or great company in the living room around the wood-burning fireplace, the true heart of the home. Off the dining room, there's a separate TV room where kids can enjoy movies or games in their own space.

After a long day, retreat to one of the four inviting bedrooms. The downstairs guest room, adorned with elements of Art Nouveau design, boasts an ensuite bathroom complete with a clawfoot soaking tub and a rainhead shower—perfect for unwinding after a day of hiking or skiing. Upstairs, discover three additional bedrooms, each exuding its own unique charm. The romantic rose-colored room offers an intimate, cozy escape, while the quirky, folk art-inspired green room adds a touch of whimsy. The main bedroom, brimming with Moroccan inspiration and antique art, features an ensuite bathroom and opens onto a sprawling rooftop terrace with breathtaking panoramic views of the property below.

Back downstairs, step out from the dining room through large glass doors onto the bluestone slate patio. Here, you can enjoy a game of boules or cornhole, or fire up the propane grill for an outdoor feast. For those who prefer relaxation, wander down the lawn to the heated, salt-water pool, open from May to September. The property is powered by an impressive array of solar panels, ensuring it remains off-the-grid with a zero carbon footprint.

The area offers miles of rail trail hiking and biking, top-class farm-to-table restaurants, charming shops, boutiques, orchards, and wine bars. If you’re lucky, a snowfall during your stay at The Stonemason will make it magical. We are also located roughly 40 minutes from popular ski resorts including Belleayre and Hunter Mountain.
