About this property
Historic Maid's Quarters Cottage in Volcano Village
Open windows to let mountain breezes flow through a little house that's big on character. At 4000 ft elevation, experience a unique upland rain forest climate where it's cool enough to relax by the fireplace or enjoy a soak out in the hot tub. Located on the grounds of our 1930s plantation house, in the heart of historic Volcano Village, The Maid's Quarters cottage is within walking distance of all village shops and restaurants, and just a few minutes drive from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The cottage is in the Hale Ohia Tract, a residential historic district of Volcano Village on a one lane road with no thru-traffic. This high elevation area, with a cool mountain climate, was historically a vacation retreat for the well-to-do of the Big Island of Hawaii, where they escaped the heat of the lowlands. In the 1930's our house was the Hutchinson Sugar Mill plantation manager's retreat, and The Maid's Quarters cottage was indeed where the servants stayed when the plantation managers vacationed in Volcano.
Newly renovated, the Maid's Quarters has one large bedroom with Queen-size bed and electric fireplace, a complete kitchen with dining area, a laundry room with washer and dryer, a bathroom with shower, and a livingroom with a woodburning stove, flatscreen internet TV with Roku and Netflix, and CD player. Hi-speed wireless internet is also included.
Total capacity is 2 people. The cottage is not appropriate for children or babies.

The cottage is extremely charming, beautifully decorated, and very clean. It is a unique spot with friendly hosts. The house is fully stocked. All you need are your clothes and a bag of groceries. Lovely place.
Todd’s place is an amazing hideaway near Volcano NP. Easy access into the park and the hot tub is perfect after a long day hiking in the park. Great place and awesome host!
The property was top notch. A ton of character and thoughtful touches. Couldn’t have asked for anything more. We absolutely adored the resident outdoor cat Raven, she is so sweet! Also the soaks in the hot tub after a long day of hiking and sightseeing. The location is incredible. We were in close proximity to the National Park and were even lucky enough to take in a Kīlauea eruption. Also close enough to walk to some great neighborhood restaurants.
Lots of love went into decorating this unique hideaway in volcano. It was perfect for the two of us for a couple nights. Very close to the entrance to the national park. We enjoyed the peaceful garden with the sound of the frogs in the evening.
Wonderful unit for our family of 10 (ages - 4.5 to 72). Appliances and A/C worked well. Short walk to the ocean, not far for shopping, and other entertainment. Owners were helpful, and responded promptly to questions. I would recommend this unit.
We really enjoyed our stay in the Maid's Quarters. The apartment is very comfortable and lovely, with antique furniture and objects that reflect the history of the property and neighborhood. It was a pleasure to cook in the kitchen (sharp knives and a Viking range and oven, both unusual in a rental). The hosts were responsive and welcoming. We loved soaking in the jacuzzi after a day of hiking. We would happily stay here again. Highly recommended.

I had an excellent experience. The owner met me when I arrived and gave me a brief tour of the cottage, pointing out items of interest. They also put together a book covering key information that was very helpful. Everything was clean and well maintained. I was there to see Kilauea erupt, and the property was just minutes from the HVNP entrance. Guests have their own parking area, about 30 feet from the door of the cottage. I highly recommend it.
Unfortunately we weren't able to enjoy our stay at the cottage as we were there for around 10 hours and it was just to sleep. Our vacation got cut short by 2 days due to illness and there's a no refund policy. I'm sure if we would've been there longer we could've taken advantage more of the property and it's amenities.

I'm sorry you were not able to spend all the time here that you had booked with us. But given your same day notice, twice, that you wouldn't be able to make it left us with zero chance of rebooking. I feel your review reflects more of how your trip went than with our property.
