Fully-renovated English basement apartment w/ private entrance in 1910 row house. Large open kitchen/living/dining room, + 1 bedroom/bath. Comfy bed + memory foam sofa bed in the living room. Crisp white sheets, down comforters/pillows, washer-dryer, 2 TVs, cable, extra-fast wifi. Modern furnishings, new appliances, uncluttered and super clean. Located in central DC in the hot Shaw neighborhood. Walk to restaurants, nightlife, DC convention center and downtown. Quick access to DC sights, Metro, bus, bikes+
We are located in the little-known neighborhood of Truxton Circle. Located within the happening neighborhood of Shaw in the heart of Washington, DC, you will enjoy quick and easy access to all that the city has to offer. As avid travelers and one-time BnB hosts years ago, we set out to create a space that is comfortable, pleasing to the senses, and equipped with the kinds of things that we ourselves like to enjoy when we travel for work or for pleasure, including quality bedding, private laundry facilities, and furnishing that don't all come from Sweden. (OK, we may have let one piece sneak in!)
The 800 sq ft (73 sq m) apartment is an English basement that feels like a home. The apartment has its own private entrance. We live upstairs so you get the kind of extra care found with properties that are owner occupied.
Stuff You Will Love:
SUPER FAST WIFI: Zip around the internet on ultra high speed internet that works at 70-170 mbps. Great for business travelers, Facetime or S.K.Y.P.E. calls, and streaming Netflix/video.
GOOD SLEEPING: Sleep is important, and to help you be as comfortable as possible you’ll enjoy a queen-size bed, or the memory foam sofa bed we acquired from Spain that our houseguests rave about. Plus, crisp white sheets, lightweight and warm down comforters, down pillows and memory foam pillows.
TV/CABLE CHOICES: The living room sports a 50” flat screen with cable TV. There is a wall-mounted flat screen TV in the bedroom, as well, fully loaded with cable TV as well.
KITCHEN: The kitchen has been planned for efficiency. There is not a full stove, instead you will find an induction stovetop that boils water in 90 seconds, and in elegant, heavy stainless steel pots and pans by Henckel. The microwave is also a convection oven, so you can microwave something from the frozen section -- or bake a cake! There’s a dishwasher and full size refrigerator with ice maker. For hot beverages, choose between a French press, a drip coffee machine with timer, or an electric kettle to make a quick cup of tea.
FARMERS’ MARKET: The Bloomingdale Farmer’s Market on Sunday is a block away and features farm fresh veggies and wonderful vendors selling various things. Please note that the fresh pasta and handmade burratta are pretty much life changing.
PARKING: There is free parking on our street. No permit is required and there is no time limit (there are restrictions for street cleaning). You can usually find a spot right in front of the house, or within a block.
Guest Access:
From the street, you will use a private entrance to your apartment. You need to be able to navigate a few steps of stairs to enter and exit.
The key is in a lock-box for your convenience. The main lock and key are high-security and cannot be copied, so you can rest assured that there are no random copies of keys floating around.
There is an internal staircase that connects the main house to the apartment, but that door is only used as an emergency exit for you. Your privacy is ensured and respected at all times.
Other Things to Note
CHILDREN -- Please note that the apartment is not well suited for toddlers. Babies are welcome, and children ages 5 and up. The apartment has hard flooring, and an internal staircase that leads to a locked door connecting to the main house. Thank you for understanding.
As we live upstairs, we are close to hand if you need anything. You may hear our footsteps overhead, or the sound of the pitter-patter of two playful cats (who are not allowed in the downstairs apartment). We are generally quiet and there are no children above you.
The cooling and heating are controlled from the main part of the house for the whole property. We are generous with the heat and the A/C to provide comfort for all. Space heaters and fans are in the apartment for your use if you need extra heat or air movement.
This is an English basement. There are two windows on the front, and a window in the bedroom. The front door also has a window, as well as a snazzy retractable screen door if you want to keep the front door open to enjoy more light and fresh air. Given that light in lower-level apartments can be limited, we provide a wide choice of lighting so you can create a comfortable environment. The space feels really nice to be in, as you will see.
The HVAC is located in a closet in the apartment. Like all HVACs, the running motor makes sound. We mention this for those who are very sensitive to sound.

About the host
Hosted by Kenneth Hill

We moved to Washington in the late 80s and enjoy the architecture, scale and diversity of the city. We have lived abroad as well, most recently in London for seven years and recently came back to DC.
One of us is a fundraiser for an historic home, the other has been an executive in higher education for 25 years. For fun we like to travel, see friends and meet new people, cook, go the theater and to movies, read, take city hikes, play tennis, or do absolutely nothing on a beach all day.

Why they chose this property
Historically we have bought homes in up and coming neighborhoods. Truxton Circle/Shaw, where we live now, up and came while we were living abroad and drew us in upon our return the the U.S. We love the Victorian and Edwardian architecture, the fresh vibe of new residents and new restaurants alongside neighbors who have been in the neighborhood for generations. This is a friendly area and we know our the neighbors, the business owners, and the farmers and artisans who set up in the Bloomingdale Market on Sundays down the street. And we love our house which has been completely renovated from head to toe.
What makes this property unique
We love to travel ourselves and always rent apartments when we do. This has allowed to us to build up a knowledge base for what makes a short-term rental property shine. We have taken time to curate furnishings for the apartment that we think create a stylish yet relaxing atmosphere. We were shooting for luxury without being stuffy -- we hope we have succeeded and hopefully you will let us know how you like it and what we can do to make the apartment even better!
It's a treat to walk out your door and have so many independent restaurants and cafes close by. Or be able to walk to a Smithsonian museum, or explore all of the cool neighborhoods that are a short walk away. This is urban living - it's stimulating and it's a lot of fun.
