If you wish to Drive to Uvita

Our Recommended Route: San Jose to Uvita

You’ll enjoy your drive from San Jose to Uvita — it’s pleasant and scenic. The highways are fully paved, well-maintained all year round, and well-marked with reflective paint and cat eyes. Expect several river crossings accessed by bridge.

Once in Uvita, you’ll drive up our mountain gravel road accessible only by 4×4 (15 mins). We can provide you with detailed directions.

Remember to rent a 4×4 vehicle if you plan to drive up the mountain to Kura

We’ve provided 2 main driving routes from San Jose in Google Maps.

If you prefer not to drive at all during your stay, we’re happy to arrange all private ground transportation in advance.

Activities available near our Villas:

The “Whale Coast” is truly an untouched part of the country that few know exist, let alone explore. We can arrange for half or full day trips to the area’s many natural parks and reserves, expert guided hikes and boating excursions, our seven beaches and stunning waterfalls.

Parks and Nature Reserves nearby:

*Ballena Marine National Park. Costa Rica’s only marine reserve, known for its iconic giant rock and sand formation in the shape of a whale’s tail. It’s also a spot where Humpback Whales are known to migrate to the warm tropical waters of Costa Rica.

*Caño Island Biological Reserve. The second best spot in Costa Rica for snorkeling and diving.

*Térraba-Sierpe Mangroves.

*Corcovado National Park. 3% of the world’s biodiversity and rated one of the most biodiverse places on earth by National Geographic.

*Piedras Blancas National Park.

*Amistad International Park.

*Chirripó National Park.

Nauyaca Waterfalls Day tour:

A visit to the spectacular Nauyaca Waterfalls is an all day tour which includes a horseback ride through the rainforest and a Costa Rican lunch at Don Lulo’s, the local owner of this incredible area.

The first cascade is a 45 meter free fall to the second fall, which is 20 meters high. The falls form a set of gorgeous pools below where you can enjoy an afternoon swim.

Whale watching:

Visit the Ballena National Marine Park, Costa Rica’s only marine reserve, for the chance to spot Humpback whales as they migrate from both hemispheres to the warm tropical waters of Costa Rica.

Plan your visit to the “Whale Coast” around their arrival: mid July to October and again from December through March.

We can arrange for half day whale watching tours where you might also see pilot whales, bottlenose and spotted dolphins — residents of the Uvita coast.

Diving and Snorkelling:

Visit Caño Island Biological Reserve — one of the best diving and snorkeling spots in Costa Rica.

We can arrange for a full-day tour that includes a picnic lunch and an optional guided hike on the island.

You’ll have the opportunity to see turtles, dolphins, sting-rays, moray eels, barracudas, tuna snapper, parrot fish, puffers and more.

Dive deeper off the island and you might see white-tipped reef shark, silky shark, bull shark, with occasional whale shark and the amazing humpback whale.

Sun & Sand:

The seven beaches in the immediate area are all within a 15 to 30 minute drive:

*Playa Ballena. One of the best places in the country to see exotic wildlife. We have private beach access exclusively for Kura guests.

*Playa Ventanas. A gorgeous swimmer’s beach renowned for its fine sand, deep sea caves, and caverns carved into the cliffs.

*Play Uvita. Part of the Marino Ballena National Park and home to the Whale’s Tail sandbar, it’s one of the most iconic beaches in the area.

*Playa Hermosa. The longest beach in the area known for its expanse of white sand, little to no stones, gentle waves, and hardly any rip tides. The perfect beginner’s surf beach.

*Playa Arco. A stunning sight of “rainforest meets the sea”. This enchanting, little-known beach is encircled by wooded, rocky cliffs, has a small waterfall with a freshwater shower, and a cave accessible at low-tide.

*Playa Dominical. A haven for advanced surfers and is well-known for its large, year-round waves. Due to strong rip tides, the beach is equipped with life guard towers and personnel.

Corcovado National Park and Sierpe:

One of the most exciting experiences you can have during your stay at Kura is a visit to Corcovado National Park and Sierpe, the gateway to the Osa Peninsula. This area is described by National Geographic as “the most biologically intense place on earth”.

We can arrange for an all-day tour, only 1.5 hours by boat, departing from the biggest mangrove in Central America. On the way, you may spot white-faced, spider and howler monkeys, sloths, coatis, tapirs, crocodiles, snakes and scarlet macaws.

When you arrive, you’ll hike the trails with our expert guides, spot and learn more about our exotic wildlife, and have the chance to take a rest at a secluded jungle waterfall.
