Surrounded by towering trees, this serene retreat feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle, offering a perfect blend of tranquility and convenience. How the Hemlock Inn came to be:
In the early 1900s William Irwin met Ada Minor in Hepner Oregon. Will had worked as a teacher and merchant and was a skilled carpenter. Ada was from a prominent local family. After marriage they moved to Newport Oregon and sometime in the early 19-teens, they moved north to Rockaway. In Rockaway Will and ADAs first project was construction of a small cabin they called the Hemlock Inn. While no photos are available, this house featured a large hemlock growing up through the roof of the kitchen. Will and Ada would have 3 children: Steve, Barney, and finally Elizabeth. Elizabeth remembered the sound of chipmunks running up and down the tree hitting the pans nailed to the tree. Will built a more civilized home that still stands just east of Grumpy’s Restaurant and Elizabeth grew up swimming in Sea View Lake across the street.
Will passed in 1938 and Ada in 1960. After Will’s passing, Ada spent time living in Portland but then moved to the Elmore Hotel to spend her last years in her beloved Rockaway. In the early 1920’s Will and Ada invested in 2 more lots – the current location of 240 Easy Street. The area was likely selected because its elevation keeps the house above the annual floods. When Ada passed in 1960 the lots were left to Elizabeth, likely because she shared her mother’s fondness for Rockaway. The lots sat unimproved until 1978 when Elizabeth and her oldest daughter (Sue) built the current cabin. The cabin was built by Bill Bess, a 20-something fresh out of the University of Oregon College of Architecture. In 2006 when Elizabeth passed, the house was purchased by Elizabeth’s youngest son, Rick, and Elizabeth’s granddaughter, Kai. The name “Hemlock Inn” was selected to honor Will and Ada and an old-growth hemlock just behind the cabin on the north side. Photos of Will and Ada are on the west wall of the cabin. The photo at the right end is Will Irwin and Major. Major was Elizabeth’s beloved German Shepherd. The graves of William and ADA Irwin are in the Bay City Cemetery.
