About the host
Hosted by Christine
We are the grandchildren of Madame Provost who purchased this home after playing a lead role in Marcel Pagnol's Topaze. This was her summer home and her parents were early residents of the village and worked on promoting the area as a summer vacation spot. The beaches are wide at low tide (and nonexistent at high tide) with amazing sweeping views down the coast. Favorite beaches are Carteret, the beaches near Vieux Eglise on other side of the Cap (a grand place to go for sunsets with a bottle of bubbly), and further down the coast. Explore! Take a drive up the coast to Goury and across to Barfleur (mussel capitol). Every small village or small road has an adventure.
Why they chose this property
Location close to the sea; quiet village life; excellent access to shopping and local markets; air quality is superb; slow pace. You can see the island of Jersey from the back of the house where there is a large garden area to sit and reflect or play some games. We also have a petanque set you can take to the beach. The kitchen is simple but functional. No granite counters but plenty of older charm. There is an electric oven and stove, a few modcoms for cooking, coffee pot, kettle, etc. Markets are close by and there are numerous nearby town markets during the week. There are numerous paths to take walks. Our favorite is to walk from the house to Carteret. It takes about 30 minutes and is a lovely walk through the village of Tot, across the marshes, pass the harbor, and to the village or beyond to the beaches. It is also where the fishermen come in with their catch (you must keep up with the tide schedule) and where the ferry leaves for Jersey.
What makes this property unique
You have access to the entire house when renting in spring, summer and fall. There is plenty of space for a family reunion during those months. (We restrict the use of rooms in the winter due to limited heating, so that the grand salon and the master bedroom are not used.) The house has large rooms with wooden floors upstairs. Downstairs the salon is wood as well as the den; the dining room, entry way, and kitchen are tiled and terrazzo. There is one new wood stove in the dining room. Rates are based on the number of people. Please feel free to contact us regarding pets, events, or other requests you may have. We like a personal touch when renting as this is a family home which is much loved, and we can adjust to your needs. It is an older stone home (300 years); it is not modern. We consider it rustic French...so if you want to be in the 21st Century, this house is not for you! This is not a renovated French home. Think Monet's Giverny without the pond. Also, you may see a cobweb (so authentic) or dust (especially if windows are open) or even a mouse if you leave the doors open to the garden (and you're out). The house has new windows, doors, and bedding as well as beds. Our bathrooms are a bit ancient so if you are someone who values a certain ambiance in a bathroom, you'll be disappointed. However, the water is hot, the toilets flush, and the water pressure is reliable, and you can drink it!
