The Poe Room is part of The Townsman Hotel, a unique boutique “unhotel” experience designed for independent travelers. Located between Mudhouse Coffee and Rockfish Brewing Company, The Townsman sits directly above Charlottesville's vibrant Downtown Mall, surrounded by restaurants, bars, shops, and entertainment. With no front desk or traditional check-in process, guests receive a personal access code before arrival and can simply arrive and settle in with ease.

Explore the best of Charlottesville right outside your door, from dining and nightlife to shopping, local breweries, vineyards, hiking trails, and historic attractions including Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and the University of Virginia. Amenities include Wi-Fi, Smart TV, Nespresso coffee maker, desk, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, and one complimentary off-site parking space located within a three-minute walk. Please note that The Townsman is a historic building without an elevator, and all rooms require access by stairs. It was a delightful stay! Being located on the downtown mall was such a treat. We visited a couple of wineries and it was enjoyable to get away for the weekend and truly relax. Thanks for the great atmosphere!

Wonderful location on the mall in Charlottesville.

This was perfect for our long weekend in Charlottesville. We enjoyed Monticello and various wineries. Had a wonderful meal at Public Fish and Oyster. Also visit Crush Pad, nearly across the street from the room.

Perfect location

This was such a nice place to stay! I haven’t slept so well in a hotel prob ever! Very comfortable and clean. I loathe a barn door on a bathroom but I get the aesthetic they were going for. There were a lot of unhoused people right in front of the building all day and night but they aren’t going to bother anyone. Had a wonderful stay!

The room was new and modern, with great amenities. It was frustrating not having regular cable channels, just streaming. The navigation and check-in information sent before check-in was very confusing. The road to the bag drop location was closed for construction, so navigation to the hotel was even more complex. Eliminate the photos and maps in the instructions; just give GPS addresses for the parking, drop off, and hotel. Finally, the check-out requirements were very unfriendly, and to threaten a charge of 35 if we didn't obey was outlandish!

We booked a couple of days to tour Charlottesville and Staunton for the Blue Flyer historic train ride for my husband‘s birthday. We travel extensively throughout the year, and I am a premier VRBO host as well, so maybe my expectations were a little bit higher than your average traveler. Having said that, the instructions are clear but not clear enough to find and a dark unlit area that you have to walk to blocks to what is basically a hostile not a hotel. This is a brownstone that someone has purchased and turned four of the rooms into bedrooms with en suite baths. They’ve done a nice job with the remodel inside but the outside location and finding it after spending the day in Staunton, Virginia and driving another hour back and it being 9 PM at night was very arduous to try and find the parking space that is poorly lit and poorly identified and then taking all of our luggage at the street a couple blocks to a walkable mall area with eateries and stores that it is mingled in with with a small sign set back off of the main area. It was Sunday, so a lot of shops were closed for the day and those that were open, were closing up shop by 9 pm. Finally, this area is inundated with homeless wandering and staying in the direct area of the mall in multiple locations so it made it a little uncomfortable when you’re trying to maneuver your things while being panhandled to. We had a great time overall, but the lack of accurate representation on this would make a better experience.
