About this property

Peaceful Getaway w/ Stunning Views, Deck! Hike, Mtn Bike, min to river! Sleeps 5

Our home is a custom-designed / custom-built, 2 bedroom and 2-1/2 bath house, designed to take advantage of the amazing views atop Burdoin Mtn. which sits at 2000 feet elevation just above the town of White Salmon. We offer excellent access to all types of recreation including windsurfing, kiting, biking, and hiking. Hike or bike from the doorstep with public access to one thousand+ acres of top-rated trails connecting within minutes to three of the Gorge's prime attractions including the renowned Coyote Wall/Syncline, Major Creek, and Catherine Creek, as well as Hospital Hill and the Evergreen Highway. Coyote Wall is considered one of the top ten must-see attractions in the state of Washington. River access is within a 20 minute drive. We oriented our house to take advantage of the views and built the living room as a partial octagon so that it focuses on 12,450 foot Mt. Adams and the surrounding territory. Wildlife abounds, with privacy, solitude, peace and quiet. It's a great retreat for recreation/sports seekers, writers, readers, a small family, a couple wishing a romantic or quiet getaway, or a solo traveller. Private 15 acres of solitude to enjoy. Within a short hiking or biking distance is a most spectacular Gorge view, overlooking a panoramic expanse of more than 70 miles of Columbia River Gorge from 2000 feet of gently sloping bluff---the Columbia River to the West, to the South overlooking the Hood River Valley and town of Hood River plus a stunning image of Mt. Hood, and to the East you gaze up the mighty Columbia towards the high deserts of Eastern Oregon and Washington. We have a lovely deck along the east side of the house overlooking our field--a perfect spot for morning tea, coffee, or even breakfast! Every room in our house offers a unique view of its own, even the bathrooms. Our open-design kitchen has all modern stainless steel amenities, plenty of custom counter tops with a peninsula for seating. Upstairs in the Master area we have a queen bed. There is a sitting area adjacent to this bedroom and a full bathroom with a clawfoot tub and shower, of course with views. The downstairs/daylight basement bedroom also has direct access to an outdoor patio, with a bunk bed double mattress on the lower bunk, twin on the upper, and its own full bath/shower. Our house was designed to provide a cozy and warm atmosphere, with plenty of privacy and modern amenities and to incorporate the beautiful nature and surroundings of our hilltop paradise. Our home is 'green' and healthy, with natural floor coverings, high-efficiency updated appliances. We have nationally ranked top-tasting private community well water. You can be assured that you will return home after your stay feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, well and healthy, and perhaps happily exhausted from recreation!

Wonderful Retreat!
We loved our stay in White Salmon! The house was great, the area was relaxing and not in hustle or bustle but close enough to White Salmon and Hood River for restaurants and recreation. The host is fantastic and friendly and eager to help. We really have a wonderful time.

Relaxation Retreat
My husband and I had the most relaxing stay here! Lisa, your awesome directions and welcome gift had us feeling taken care of right from the start! The house has everything one would need for a comfortable stay, and the peaceful surroundings really enhance the experience. We were a little disappointed to find that the viewpoint described in the listing is no longer accessible, but we enjoyed several lovely walks around the property and surrounding area. If you are looking for a place to rest and relax while connecting with nature, this is the place for you!

About the host

Host profile image
Dave and Lisa met in the Gorge in the early 90's, sharing many of the same interests. We built our home together in 1995 and now have a small family which includes Nicolaas, age 9, and Jin Bo, age 5, plus our dog, Cosmo, 5 chickens and a stray or rescued animal here and there. We both have extensive sports backgrounds which brought us each separately to the Gorge in the 1980's. Lisa no longer competes, Dave no longer climbs into the highest altitudes, but we love introducing our children to the opportunities we had and which abound in the Gorge area, including windsurfing, skiing, rock climbing, sailing, hiking, kayaking and mountain biking. Our children indulge in viewing, identifying, and tracking the wildlife around our home or down by the River. They love to explore, looking for trails, scat, nests, etc. and they really enjoy the summer treat of sleeping outside and counting the shooting stars! We feel so very fortunate to have our beautiful home in the Gorge and look forward to sharing it with guests like you!

Why they chose this property

Lisa discovered this property in 1990 and immediately fell in love with it, with its sweeping gentle fields and spectacular view to Mt. Adams. Lisa had been traveling to the Gorge since 1985 for professional windsurfing races, and although from the Virgin Islands, she felt more and more at home in this beautiful area and began looking for property in 1989. In 1994 she designed her dream home and had it built by DC-3 Construction, completed in 1995 and updated along the way. The house was built to incorporate as much of the surrounding nature and beauty of the area and Dave did the hand-hewn beamwork himself. Unlike many custom home building projects which leave the homeowner feeling slighted or unhappy, this one left Lisa feeling as if the house enveloped the best and brightest energy and beauty within its walls. We have loved and maintained the house and have updated it accordingly. Our two growing children love this home and the property and spend much of their time here outside playing and exploring, as children are meant to do! We love it here and hope that you will also!

What makes this property unique

The views from the knoll upon which our 'House on the Hill' is built are ever-changing and spectacular. Mt. Adams sits loftily large to the North, which was what first caught my eye when I found this property. Just as magnificent as Mt. Adams is, the surrounding meadows and trees (our acreage was once a treeless meadow) are equally lovely. The flora and solitude attract an abundance of wildlife which we so enjoy watching from the deck, from the living room, or from the upstairs bed in the early mornings or late evenings. Every window brings a view, even windows at the stairs landings. The peace and quiet almost causes a buzz or ringing in your ears. The easy access to recreation is what brought us here in the first place. Probably one of the greatest special bonus 'views' which some guests have been honored with, is watching a mother deer give birth in the high grasses of the swale just below our house. That is our secret maternity ward, and it is incredibly special. We love the wildlife around us and make every effort to not disturb or disrupt the comings and goings of our beautiful native critters. If I were not the homeowner and constantly finding projects around the house, my favorite activity here would be, and one day WILL be, just to sit for hours with a book, perhaps on the bench inside our circle of trees down below the house. Sometimes I sit there and just listen to the birds and the wind, and look out over the meadow and savor having something so beautiful right here in our own backyard, literally. Also, in the last 22 years, the Syncline, Catherine and Major Creeks trails have gone from being our little secrets for running and mountain biking from our neighborhood, to being officially 'developed' as trails by the Forest Service and put on area recreation maps. So our secret trails are now highly-sought out attractions, like the Coyote Wall, and they are all so easily accessed on foot or by bike right from our front door.
