Nestled in the heart of redwood country and perched atop the high banks of the nationally known wild and scenic Smith River lies the historic Woodmoor Gables Lodge. This beautifully renovated 1936 redwoods retreat has 360-degree views of the tallest trees in the world and the Smith River. Wake up to views of the river and to the sound of it rushing by. Enjoy your coffee in the kitchen or dine in the evenings facing sunsets as the river meanders to the mighty Pacific Ocean.
Our family’s river front gathering place is located directly adjacent to Redwood National and State Parks, in Hiouchi, California, just 15 minutes east of Crescent City and the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Known for sunny summer days and cool evening nights, Hiouchi is considered the area’s gateway to the redwoods, and Woodmoor Gables is the premier riverfront rental property.
The house sits on 1.3 acres of sprawling lawns, gardens, lily ponds and fountains and has a private deck and small orchard. The architecture is reminiscent of the 16th-century Tudor period, providing a classic ambiance with all the modern comforts to make your stay in the heart of the redwoods memorable and relaxing.
Woodmoor Gables has been extensively renovated using top of the line finishes including granite counters, granite tile and maple hardwood flooring throughout as well as all new appliances, handcrafted maple cabinetry, lighting and furniture. An open floor plan and new windows in every room allow unobstructed views of the redwoods and Smith River.
This two-story floor plan offers incredible options to make your stay enjoyable no matter what the season. The first floor offers an expansive kitchen-dining room layout. The kitchen is furnished with a bar-height counter and chairs so you have a wide, open view of the redwoods and river while you host friends and family. The dining area features plenty of seating (with a table for 12 and room for more) to host family gatherings. After dinner, enjoy the crackle of a Northwood’s fire in the living room, while curling up on one of several couches to enjoy an evening’s conversation. The first floor also has two of the most exciting attributes of the lodge: our redwood paneled sunroom which still has the original lead framed windows and our large mahogany paneled game room featuring a regulation pool table, fireplace and 50” flat screen TV, with plenty of games and reading materials to entertain the entire family.
When you are ready for sleep, chose from our 6 tastefully decorated bedrooms: The Master Suite: located on the second floor, king bed, private view of the river and redwoods, 50” flat screen TV with surround sound system, private walk in closest and master bath with antique claw foot tub and large granite shower The Fountain Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook and private bath The Redwood Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook The Green Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook The Twin Room: located on the second floor, 2 twin beds, garden view, vaulted ceiling The Garden Room: located on the first floor, queen bed, private bath, garden view
The Redwoods and the Smith River are a 5 minute walk through the beautifully landscaped grounds or a short drive to the entrance of Redwood National Park. The manicured lawns and gardens are an incredible treat in the spring, summer and fall, and offer a pond, fountain, rose garden, Japanese maples, and unique trees and shrubs found nowhere else in the County. Just up the road from the Park is the quaint little town of Hiouchi, which offers large morning breakfast (Paul Bunyan Style!) and lunch plates, and a small hamlet store for obtaining groceries and gas.
Because we live locally, we can offer a great variety of suggestions to help seed your trip with places to visit and explore including hikes through the redwoods, beaches or coastal dunes, whale watching, magnificent lighthouses, horseback rides on the beaches and in the redwoods, bird watching some of the 413 plus species known to visit Del Norte County and of course fishing on the beautiful Smith River, known for its world record salmon and steelhead fishing.
We love Woodmoor Gables and invite you to enjoy the redwood’s premier lodge while traveling through the Pacific Northwest or fishing our pristine rivers. Woodmoor Gables is that perfect place for large families or groups of friends to gather for an extended stay-cation. We hope you will consider it a home where your entire family can relax and play.
Our caretaker lives on the property in the carriage house, separate from the home and our guests.

Property was amazing and it was super smooth communication with Chris. He was super helpful as well. Just few small suggestions when you are with kids in this era, TV should be internet TV and also couple of outlets were not working but with so many of those doesn’t matter.
The property was very well equipped. There was plenty of seating both inside and out. The location is perfect for hiking, kayaking, etc. It is very quiet at night. We enjoyed our stay and highly recommend it!
We stayed in the most wonderful home overlooking the River. The home was comfortable clean and exceeded our expectations! The beds were clean comfortable the bathrooms were clean and had great towels! The kitchen was beautiful and spacious well equipped with everything we needed! They had the best puzzles and jenga for our family night! Chris was an amazing host!
Nostalgically rustic, beautiful, home overlooking the Smith River. For our family reunion group of 18, it was comfortable and spacious. This location is sits at the crossroads between Trees of Mystery and Brookings Or. All our activties took place here. It was perfect and secluded. Thouroughly delightful time

Thank you for your kind words Anissa. Super happy your family had a wonderful stay in our home and hopefully a magical visit to the redwoods!
Fantastic historic place, original detailing but modernized just right. Plenty of space for our entire family, fantastic kitchen to cook in, outdoor areas and the views! Chris was a great host, meeting us and showing us the house as well as tips for things to do locally. The house had everything you would want and more. Couldn't be happier. Thank you Chris and Lisa for allowing us to visit your home for the week. It was a memory that will not be forgotten and hopefully we will be back.
House was beautiful, property manager extremely nice and helpful with any requests that I sent his way. Location of home for a getaway was perfect and well needed. The sound of the river put us all to sleep every night! Would recommend to anyone looking for that escape from every day craziness!
