About this property

Private Beachfront House on Exclusive Windermere Island

HoHum is a beautiful beachfront home on Windermere Island; a secure gated community, just over a tiny bridge from the main island of Eleuthera. Windermere is an unspoiled tropical hide-a-way; and the perfect place to un-plug, relax, and enjoy the beach with family and friends.

HoHum is a mid-century bungalow-style home that blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape (and is literally on the beach). It has a 2-bedroom/2-bath main house and a 1-room studio/guest house, with 3rd full bath. The main house features an open floor plan and easy one-floor living in a dreamy setting—with wrap-around patios overlooking a turquoise sea.

HoHum's layout is great for couples and families with kids. The main house features practical tropical design, including beautiful tile floors throughout, and high vaulted ceilings. All rooms and bedrooms offer ocean views and breezes through large picture-windows and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors. The house has a large comfortable living room, a big breezway with dining and sitting area, pretty full-size kitchen, plus waterfront patios for outdoor dining, sunbathing, and incredible sunrises and sunsets.

The bedrooms in the main house are both very spacious with en-suite bathrooms and direct ocean views. The 'master-bedroom' has a king bed, office nook area, and a very large bathroom with double vanity sinks, bathtub/shower, and a separate toilet room (plus gated garden area with outdoor shower). The 2nd full bedroom in the house has its own oceanfront patio, 2 twin beds (easily convertible to king) and vanity area with sink, plus a separate bathroom with toilet, shower, & sink. The layout of HoHum's 2 large bedrooms offers privacy for 2 couples sharing the house, as each bedroom book-ends the home's living room, kitchen, and glass-walled breezeway. The breezeway's sitting area also has a (full-size) futon-sofa, good for kids or an extra sleeper.

Outside, HoHum has 2 well-kept beach paths off both corners of the house. Each beach path has a convenient cold-water shower for rinsing sandy feet. HoHum's easy in-out beach access is simply awesome.

HoHum's Studio/guest house also overlooks the ocean and is about 100-feet from the main house. The studio is an ideal creative workspace that can double as a 3rd bedroom. The studio has a king size bed, its own wrap-around patio, and beach path. It also offers a high ceiling; kitchenette (with minifridge & sink); and a small full bathroom with sink, shower, and toilet. It was originally designed for use as an art studio, so it is an amazing place for painting and creative projects, with lots of natural light, lots of counter space, a center island, and easels for guests that might enjoy painting or drawing the surrounding tropical landscapes.

AC Note: HoHum is purposely designed for tropical living, with lots of screened sliders to take advantage of “Windermere's” famous breezes. Most times a year AC is not necessary. However, HoHum has AC units in both the main house bedrooms and in the studio/guest house only (they are new and work well). Other main house common rooms, like the living room, have ceiling fans only.

The Beach: HoHum's beach is second to none. It is a haven for swimming and snorkeling. The water is protected by a coral reef, so it is calm and crystal-clear—and especially peaceful for kids. The sand is made from coral, so its powder-soft and cool to walk and play on at-all-times—it extends 5 miles for leisurely strolls & jogs. There is also a 2nd beach on Windermere Island called West Beach. It is great for shelling and just down the road on Windermere's sound-side. West Beach often has picnics during high season (and the bar/picnic hosts accept cash & venmo).

Please Note: because of HoHum's super-close proximity to the ocean and constant exposure to the elements, it does need some re-painting to some outside areas, but overall it still remains beautiful. Outside, the main outdoor shower (in gated area off master bathroom) plus the 2 beach path showers are good and in working order (but one outdoor shower off the 2nd bedroom, and one off studio have been temporarily disconnected). Inside the house, an old kitchen bar sink and a bidet in the master bath have also been disconnected. You won't miss them as the house is fully equipped and remains a gem.

HoHum is the perfect house for guests who appreciate a comfortable, charming, and unpretentious home in an private and exclusive location with unbeatable in/out beach access.

Unsafe property: serious renovation required

We booked this property expecting a comfortable stay, even though it was described as an older property. Unfortunately, it turned out to be our worst vacation rental experience yet and almost ruined our holiday.Serious safety hazards were present, including an oven that malfunctioned and caused a small explosion, injuring my husband. The refrigerator was rusted, leaking, and broken, making it unusable for storing food. The kitchen was inadequately equipped with old, rusty utensils, few bowls and limited cookware.Bathroom facilities were problematic; faucets were unpredictable, the bidet was non-functional, and we even lost running water entirely for a night, making basic hygiene and meal preparation impossible.Structural safety was also compromised by exposed sharp screws, broken door handles, and damaged screens allowing pests into the house. It also has uneven floors making it unsafe for older people.Overall, the property is currently unsafe and unsuitable for guests. Major renovations are urgently needed to make this home livable and safe. Until improvements are made, I strongly advise potential renters to avoid this property.

This review is both dishonest and misleading. Ho-Hum is super comfortable and a perfectly safe home; it is a wonderful beach house that is especially great for guests of all kinds, including young children and older adults. It may not be up to everyone’s taste or standards, and it is not in perfect, new/mint condition, but it is lovely and far nicer than many island properties expressly because of its pretty decor, extremely comfortable living spaces, easy-inside/outside access, and layout…with spacious airy rooms, and an unbeatable direct beachfront location (offering ocean views from every room). But, because it is so very close to beach/ocean…and is older, it does have some exterior wear (weather worn spots outside mainly) which need painting and woodworking improvements. A few doors need to be replaced (that are totally unnecessary anyway…as there’s easy access to beach, patios, yard, and driveway from the multiple sliders on all sides). Most guests could care less about these items (and they are clearly stated in the listing description). But, that said, I do also have additional photos available, taken in April 2025, for anyone wishing to see more of property, supplies, etc. And I am happy to text/email them in advance of booking any time. Please reach me through my property management company, Eleuthera Vacation Rentals (easily found online). In short, I did try to work with these guests to be nice, offering compensation very fairly for a few issues but they instead changed their story (only after they completed a 10-day stay) and flatly tried to extort me (specifically threatening to leave a horrible review if I did not meet their exact demands). Anyway, it’s hard to understand without full backstory, but I do also suspect these guests had other issues going on that were influencing their experience and issues. So please see below for my explanations of specific items cited…most of which are misleading at best, and blatant lies at worse. Oven issue: was the result of their user error on the 1st night of stay, and serious lack of common sense. It is 2 & 1/2 years old, cooks very well, is clearly marked, and works fine…no other guests staying have ever had trouble using or lighting it (nor have I). And most folks understand what happens when you turn GAS on for many minutes….and then impatiently and carelessly try to lite the pilot without airing out first. Water issue: from 10pm to 8am (primarily during sleeping hours) the main house water supply ran out. This was due to a brief outage and temporary limitations imposed by the Island’s water company (which was making a repair to our area’s infrastructure and pipes). We immediately minimized the inconvenience by hooking up house to our back up tank. Guests had water as usual for the entire rest of the stay. And possibly contributed to temporary loss, from their own excessive or careless usage. The Island has been making repairs this year, and late last year, which is why we added back up tank (to resolve any temporary issues). Most homes do not offer that. Pests: they have dishonestly described in review post what was previously reported to me by the guests themselves, as a little stray cat that came in through an improperly closed sliding door left ajar by wall. Additionally, I explained to them, (while they were there) that they should double check the sliders to be sure they were closing them properly (not an issue for most people and no other “pests” were reported). Kitchen supplies: The kitchen is extremely well stocked with many plates and bowls and abundant cookware and service ware: multiple sets of pots and pans, glass baking dishes, tons of cooking and eating utensils, (not rusty), a blender, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker… plus 2 French presses, gelato makers, pitchers etc. etc. This claim is so false it is beyond absurd. Refrigerator: The house has a perfectly good Frigidaire refrigerator/freezer; it cools perfectly but does have a bit of wear on the metal exterior from humidity. It can also drip inside…from condensation (especially when the door is left open too long or frequently in humidity). But it cools and works very well and is perfectly usable and sanitary. Screws/Door handles/screens: after they left, we found one slider handle that had a loose screw, so we tightened it with a screwdriver. It took about 5 seconds. The screwdriver was easily accessible to the guests (in kitchen drawers and laundry room). And Note: the handle was still working fine either way…tightened easily with a simple turn of screw. Or they could have asked my caretaker to fix it. Screens occasionally need repair, usually from guests/kids pushing on them…but all are presently fine, plus all big sliders in house offer no-see-um screening too, which is great to have on island…keeping bugs out while still allowing ocean breezes (but obviously only if u close them properly). Bathrooms: main house has 2 large full baths with separate sinks/vanity areas, and separate toilet areas. They are both very nice. Yes, the bidet in the master toilet room no longer works and we haven’t removed it but all else, including faucets, works fine. The 3rd Bathroom in the art studio is small but also works fine (has sink, shower & toilet). Floors/structural-safety issues: a blatant weird lie in the post. The floors are even and beautifully tiled throughout the house. What these guests are referring to, is their ridiculous complaint about the small step down from the living room to the breezeway. This step is easily negotiated by young children and older adults. We have been renting the house for many years and no one else has ever complained or had any problem with this perfectly normal step-down. Lastly, please refer to listing images to clearly see small step and other areas of house (or as I mentioned up top) I can offer/send additional new photos, taken in April 2025 with my cell, and I am happy to chat anytime about all house specifics prior to booking.

The most relaxing vacation ever

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Ho Hum is truly a magical place! My grandparents built this wonderful house back in the late 60s and being able to bring my family here and share this amazing place with them was a once in a life time experience. The house is still as beautiful and charming as ever and the beach is the just as private and spectacular as when I was a little girl.As my grandparents used to tell us when we would visit years ago, getting here isn't easy but if it was it wouldn't be so special.Being at Ho Hum is worth the effort to get there. The only thing you can do there is get relaxed! And that is what we did. We swam, snorkled at the reef (we saw sea turtles, rays, an octopus and lots of tropical fish) woke up to stunning sunrises, star gazed at night and simply slowed down.Ho Hum is island living at it's best.

Really beautiful house, on a stunning beach.........BUT?

Rating Details: The property manager was adequately helpful. The vacation rental was very dirty. I was very happy with the location. I was very dissatisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Our party of four, 2 couples, were warned by the booking agent that Ho Hum was tired, but we wanted to be on Windermere Island, as we knew the beach was magnificent. We looked forward to 3 relaxing weeks. Ho Hum is a magnificent home, with awesome views, and the interior is lovely, Had we been staying for only 1 week, we would probably have overlooked a lot of the numerous things that needed fixing, but over the course of 3 weeks, it is important that a house functions well. Then a horrible thing happened! Two rats and a mouse appeared in the master bedroom. We should have realized on our arrival that there were rodents in the room, as a chest of drawers was chewed around the top and bottom edges, we informed the caretaker, who sent over 3 live rat traps, by day 3 of seeing very obvious signs that rats were living in the room, we informed the agent, that we could no longer stay in the house, and we’d like our money back. The listing agent proceeded to find us alternative accommodation, while we went back and forward with the owner, negotiating how much of our money should be returned. The contract does not cover anything about rat infestation, which the owner pointed out to us, telling us she was in no way obligated to return any of our money, as we were choosing to leave. Finally she returned 2weeks plus1 day, and also returned our $1000 security deposit. There were so many thing damaged and broken in the home, it really didn’t seem reasonable to pay a $1000 security deposit. We did inform the caretaker on our arrival of all the things that were broken. My overal impression of Ho Hum is that there needs to be considerable renovations done on the house. At no time did the owner offer to send an exterminator to deal with the problem. This is a lovely house that has been allowed to slip into a state of disrepair, but with rats and mice lurking around in the bedroom and living room we had no choice but to leave. We lost 4 precious days of our vac
Response from VrboOwner on 30 May 2022
While we were very sorry to hear these guests were not happy with their stay, their account of our response and the ample discounts and refunds given to them is a gross misrepresentation of facts. First, they were offered to leave with full refund for unused nights right away after seeing the rodent. Instead they elected to stay on while I tried to fix the issue. We did have trouble finding the spot where the rodent was getting in from the outside (and we did also call an exterminator who was unable to come right away. Response time is not always so fast in the islands). In the end, they decided to leave and I gave them a full refund for all the unused nights, PLUS a free night, plus the discount they had negotiated for a three week stay, even though they stayed just a week. Hardly the type of response and compensation that their review suggested. Unfortunately I have since learned that this group, Keith and Colleen Suddaby and Geri Harper, have a reputation on the island for beating down owners on the price of houses. They negotiated aggressively for a discount when they booked, and then tried but failed to get money back for the week they stayed in the house. I believe that is why they posted this negative review. Since then I did have an exterminator in and the problem has been eliminated. There was no infestation, just a small hole deep in the slider tracks (inside the wall and hard to find) where a rodent was coming in. Since then, we have had many more guests stay and they have had no complaints. We also have many guests return year-after-year to enjoy our simple home. We have never billed the property as anything grander than it is and without question, the location is unbeatable. Ho-Hum Has a lovely vintage architecture and shabby-chic interior. Ocean views and tropical breezes are everywhere. Most guests appreciate its unique charm and rare beauty despite some age and wear here and there. Contact me any time w/questions, Alexa P

House was Ho Hum

Rating Details: The property manager was more than helpful. The vacation rental was clean. I was more than happy with the location. I was somewhat dissatisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: A stay on Windermere Island is a treat, as a quiet retreat the Ho Hum House is tired. Clean enough, but beach houses near the ocean need upkeep inside and out: holes in bed sheets, kitchen appliances worn out or not working, no hangers or dresser in the second bedroom, outdoor showers non-existent although website indicated otherwise. Management, housecleaner and property manager very responsive, however.

The owner has replaced the sheets and provided hangers for the closet of the guest bedroom. All kitchen appliances are working. There is an outdoor shower off the master bedroom, as advertised, and it works well.

We finally arrived and were thrilled to see the breathtaking views of Ho Hum house. As our week went on we went scuba diving snorkeling swimming and beaching . The house was perfect for our family. We noticed that the house is getting a bit run down and needs some things fixed. We really did not care though because it was fun for us all.

The home, staff and amenities get a B, but we would stay here again. Would bring more provisions, books and games the next time as there is nothing to do after dark and the bugs start biting at dusk. Views are magnificent!
