Superb house like no other in the Dordogne valley: on the square of a listed village, built in the 15th century, wood panelling from the 18th century, giant stone staircase and stone walls, big fireplaces... A house full of character and history since it once was the village hall and school, and where the famous french writer Pierre Loti spent his vacations several times as a child.
You will enjoy its 1700 ft2, its 540 ft2 living room with 18th century wood panelling, its two 215 ft2 bedrooms with each a shower room and toilets, its stone "castle" staircase with its wrought iron railing, its large kitchen with open fireplace... If you like wood and stone, this house will delight you. And under these ancient appearances remain all the modern conveniences. Bedding renewed in 2022. The house is sunny but remains cool even in the summer thanks to its 3ft thick stone walls (and there is a fan in each bedroom). There is no garden but at 300ft a large park on a pedestrian island will welcome you (featuring games for children, a "pétanque" court, a basketball court, a rugby court... you will find pétanque balls in the house if you want to try this typical french sport!).
The house is close to all shops: bakery at 130 ft (for croissants every day!), market at 150 ft twice a week for fresh local products, restaurant at 300ft, supermarkets at 2 minutes and for the more sporty, petanque ground and canoe/bike rental at 1000ft...
It is ideally located to visit the Dordogne valley. The renowned Padirac chasm is a 20 minutes drive, Rocamadour a 35 minutes drive, the "most beautiful villages of France" (official award, not my personal opinion!) Loubressac, Autoire and Carennac are all less than 6 miles away, Saint-Céré and its festival at 10 minutes... Not to mention the "Causses du Quercy natural park", the countless castles, the hikes, the caves, the aquatic and animal parks very much enjoyed by the children... Basically, everything is less than 30 minutes away by car, a few days won’t be enough to explore everything! In the house, you will find a guidebook that I wrote in French and English to share my good addresses for visits, places to swim, and of course... good restaurants and local specialties to try!
The house can accommodate up to five people but please note that there are only two bedrooms (see photos):
- one room with a double queen size bed (160 cm wide) and a single bed - one room with a double queen size bed (160 cm wide)
Bed linen, towels, wifi and cleaning fees included.
Please be aware that this house is located in the heart of the village, which means that you will be able to hear the village live. There is very little traffic and Bretenoux is generally speaking very quiet but from the living room you can sometimes hear the noises of the market, the bar or the restaurants on the square. The noise is not excessive and the bedrooms are completely silent but don’t expect the absolute silence of a house deep in the countryside like you can find so many in the Lot region!

The house was wonderful: spacious, comfortable, laden with charm and character, and well-located for exploring the region. The kitchen contained every tool and appliance necessary for meal preparation, and Stephane has brilliantly affixed laminated step-by-step operating instructions to the cooker, washer, dryer, etc.-- such a thoughtful thing to do! He was an excellent host; hospitable, informational, and readily available. The single negative aspect of our stay occurred toward the end and was neither his fault nor a problem with the house, but one of timing. The disruption caused by the setting-up of the rides, booths, etc. for the annual village fête made parking and getting in and out of little Bretenoux complicated and annoying. By all means, enjoy staying at this interesting 15th century house, but make sure the village calendar is free of events!

About the host
Hosted by Stephane
I grew up in the area and it will be a pleasure to tell you about it, as well as talk about the history of this fantastic house! If you come for tourism I can indicate you nice places to visit and a couple of good restaurants. I usually try to welcome my guests in person, but if I’m not available, my mother will do it, or I will leave the keys in a key box. I speak french, english and a bit of spanish.
