Gorgeous home: walk to beach, harbor, cliff walk, wiggly bridge, dining etc.
The Varrell House is located in the heart of York Harbor, Maine and a 3 minute walk to the family friendly York Harbor beach. Listen to the fishing boats as they depart the Harbor each morning, smell the salty air and feel the gentle ocean breeze. The home was originally built as a guest house (Varrell House -- Annex) in the early 20 Century and served as a Bed & Breakfast (Canterbury House) in the latter part of the 20th Century. You’ll have plenty of room for gathering with family and friends -- including a newly renovated kitchen (winter 2017-18) - two large sitting areas, a new (2021) and large front porch and a new lawn with gas fire pit shaded by gorgeous old trees. Some of the rooms and grounds offer partial views of the harbor where time will slowly pass as you watch the boats come and go. 10 bedrooms with 7 bathrooms means plenty of room for the whole family without long wait times to take a shower! The charming home was renovated a few years ago to include a new kitchen, 2 new bathrooms and brand new furnishings to ensure you have a very comfortable stay. We offer one of the best per room/per night fees or per person/per night of any large rental in York Harbor. We also have a "sister" property - The Briars at Homeaway - #4035882 that is just a few doors away. Both have a long history of exceptional reviews.
Our home is in an ideal spot to enjoy the sought after environs of York Harbor. Guests can easily walk to the Harbor Beach known for its family friendly atmosphere. The Cliff Walk starts at the Harbor Beach and offers spectacular views of the rocky Maine coast and stunning Victorian mansions. The Hartley Mason estate is a beautiful public park overlooking the Harbor Beach with flower gardens and plenty of shade from the summer sun. Moulton Park is 2 minutes down the street from us with a fantastic space for any outdoor activity with lots of sun and shade. The Fisherman’s Walk is steps away where you stroll along the river and enjoy views of the boats coming in and out of the harbor – including lobsterman with their fresh catch of the day. Fisherman’s walk brings you to the Wiggly Bridge-Steadman Woods where you can take a loop through the forest or continue walking to the historic York Village. York Village (less than five minutes away by car in case you lost track of how long you’ve been walking) was settled in 1624 (3 years after Plymouth Plantation!) and offers a rich array of historical buildings (e.g Old Gaol – one of the oldest jails in America; a one room school house; Jefferds Tavern; The Old Burying Ground featuring 18th-19th century carved tombstones; and the John Hancock Warehouse etc.).
The Harbor is rich in culture and fine dining. The York Art Association is located a few houses down the street from us. George Marshall store gallery is located through the Steadman Woods and has a series of art exhibits during the year (the curator lives down the street from our house). There are other small galleries and shops in the Village. York Harbor Inn, Stage Neck Inn, and Chapman Cottage each offer award winning dining and are all a five minute walk from our home. The Dockside Restaurant is located across the harbor (five minute drive away) and is a great spot to view the marina and have a great meal. The marina offers boat and kayak rentals for those wishing to experience some “ocean” culture.
The York area and surrounding towns offer a never ending list of things to do. Visit lighthouses. Go whale watching. Explore forts and historical sights. Enjoy the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. Hike Mt. Agamenticus for breathtaking views of the ocean to the east and forest/mountains to the west (you can also drive to the top if you are feeling lazy and visit the nature exhibit in the old ski lodge). Shop at the Kittery Outlets (save this for those rainy days). Visit the York Beach boardwalk with an amusement park, bowling, arcade, shops, live entertainment, salt water taffy and more. Hiking-Biking-Boating-Sunbathing…or just reading a book in the many nooks of our beautiful home. You will love the relaxed pace of Maine. There is a reason our state motto is "Maine, the way life should be".
Looking to accommodate an even bigger group? Ask us about The Briars, our 8 bedroom home, located just a few doors away -- homeaway # 4035882. We also have a third property, with 6 bedrooms in very close proximity.

Our group of 14 had a lovely stay at the Varrell House. The house was very well stocked with all the essentials you could need. The location is great, just a short walk to the beach or Fisherman’s walk. Lance is an excellent host and his suggestions for places to visit were spot on!

Hi Liz,
We don't get many folks visiting us from the UK -- it was a pleasure to meet you and your extended family. I'm happy that you all had an amazing time at the Briars. Having been expats a couple of times, we understand how important that visit home can be. Glad that you loved it!
Hope you'll come visit with us again!

Donna,
It was such a pleasure to meet you and your family. I'm so happy that everyone had a fantastic 5 days at our home to enjoy your granddaughter's wedding (great that the weather held off for them!). I loved that you could have all 5 of your boys plus their kids to make memories together. I hope you'll come visit us again.
Convenient parking behind house; nearby areas for walking/nature viewing. The ocean was a short walk from the house with early morning views that were terrific. The house had lots of beds & a good number of bathrooms (all w/ shower/sink/toilet). The kitchen was a little tight when all of our cooks were working (!), but it was supplemented by an extra refrigerator in the garage. We loved the two sitting rooms for spreading out for discussion/reading/needlework.

Kathleen,
Thanks so much for your review - it was nice to meet you and your crew. I'm so happy that you enjoyed our home and the convenient location to the beach/walks! Thanks for pointing out the extra full size fridge -- I forget to mention that (and the small one on the 3rd floor) that really helps most groups. I don't know how many cooks you had in the kitchen :), but I'd point future guests to the pictures on our website -- we have an open concept kitchen/dining area with a large counter and huge pantry area! I hope you'll come back and visit us again!
We all had a wonderful vacation at this beautiful house. There was plenty of room for all 18 of us. The house was very clean and decorated nicely. We spent lots of time enjoying the large front porch. The extra fridge was great to have with a large group. We loved the location because so close to the beach and to the fisherman's walk and wiggly bridge which we enjoyed several times. Lance was a great host and gave excellent tips on the area. Highly recommend!

Thanks for all the kind words about your experience at the Varrell House!
We are biased, but we agree that the location is pretty amazing with easy access to the Harbor Beach, Fisherman's Walk (great for watching sunsets!), and proximity to some incredible restaurants. Thanks for pointing out the extra fridge -- we sometimes forget to mention that in our write-up. We also have the small fridge on the 3rd floor to make it easy for folks too.
We hope you'll come stay with us again sometime!
Home provided us with the perfect venue to enjoy our family gathering

We had a great time at your wonderful home! There was plenty of room for two big families to enjoy the long weekend! All the rooms were spacious and beautifully decorated. We loved relaxing on the front porch with views of the water and there is a great yard with a gas fire pit to enjoy at night. The York Harbor area has so much to do and great walks to enjoy right from the house. Lance was so nice and great to work with and we will definitely be back for another visit!

The house was perfect for our family of 23, ranging in age from 4 months to 80 years. There were beds for all of us and plenty of space to gather together in the living rooms, dining room and kitchen. We utilized the grill and fire pit in the back yard. It was great to have the beach towels and toys for the kids. Lance was very responsive and quickly resolved a couple requests.

I'm so happy that everyone had a great experience at the Varrell House. I'm sorry that I didn't get to see you but it was so fun to meet your daughter and your 4 month old great grandchild!! Also nice to chat with your husband and his service to our country (and congrats on your 60th anniversary!). We get quite a few three generation groups but not 4 generations!! So cool to think about the memories you all created (and you were BUSY - deep sea fishing, whale watching, trips to Boston, Portsmouth etc!). I hope you'll come visit us again!
Hi John,

Hi Kylie,
Thanks very much for sharing your experience at the Varrell House for your wedding weekend. I'm so happy that you had an amazing experience and that you'll have forever memories of our home associated with your special day. When cleaning the house I found some copies of the lovely note that you shared with all your guests -- thanks very much for including some of the house rules! I always get a little nervous with wedding groups and I appreciate everyone complying with the house rules so that my neighbors didn't have any issues!
I hope you'll come back sometime with your friends for an anniversary gathering!
In the meantime, all the best to you both!

Very comfortable house, great location, amazing host
We stayed here for a friends reunion (21 people) and found York Harbor a great, central location for our week together. The house was very comfortable for all of us - it's really nicely appointed, with plenty of areas for large and small groups. Lance the host was amazing - always responsive to our every request and question, and helpful with local knowledge and activities. We'd definitely stay again!

About the host
Hosted by Lance
I was born in York and raised just down the street from this beautiful home. I spent countless hours/days playing in the neighborhood -- exploring fun spots such as the Harbor Beach, Cliff Walk, Fisherman's Walk, Wiggly Bridge-Steedman Woods, Moulton Park just to name a few! As a boy I delivered newspapers and mowed lawns in the neighborhood (including mowing this lawn when it was the Canterbury House!). In my late teens/early college years, I worked in Stage Neck Inn which is a five minute walk away. I was married at the Dockside Guest Quarters located at the mouth of the harbor where the river meets the ocean. Two of my three kids were born in York Hospital. Needless to say, my heart, soul and spirit are woven into this area.
I understand the needs of families/groups who are looking to rent a home. I've been renting homes to tourists in York and other towns for nearly twenty years. I've lived abroad three times and travelled to over 60 countries on six continents. I have three young kids and we've stayed in rental properties all over the world and we know how to make a home a great experience for visitors!
I'm happy to help as you plan your trip. I've got 40+ years of experience in the area -- I know all the popular stuff as well as plenty of "off the beaten" path and local spots.
Why they chose this property
This property was originally built to cater to visitors coming from all over the world to enjoy York Harbor and the surrounding area. The home has been a guest house and bed/breakfast over the years. During the winter of 2017 -- we are renovating the entire kitchen and two bathrooms, painting many rooms and furnishing the entire house with beautiful pieces. The home sits on one of the largest lots in the harbor and we putting in a new/enlarged lawn for our guests to enjoy.
What makes this property unique
You will love the charm of this century old home -- plenty of gathering space for your group. A beautiful living room with adjoining sitting room separated by French doors giving you the flexibility to spend time together as one big group or give kids/adults their own space. Great front porch to watch the beachgoers come and go. Great yard for playing games and a fire pit for evening fun.
