About this property

Gorgeous home: walk to beach, harbor, cliff walk, wiggly bridge, dining etc.

The Varrell House is located in the heart of York Harbor, Maine and a 3 minute walk to the family friendly York Harbor beach. Listen to the fishing boats as they depart the Harbor each morning, smell the salty air and feel the gentle ocean breeze. The home was originally built as a guest house (Varrell House -- Annex) in the early 20 Century and served as a Bed & Breakfast (Canterbury House) in the latter part of the 20th Century. You’ll have plenty of room for gathering with family and friends -- including a newly renovated kitchen (winter 2017-18) - two large sitting areas, a new (2021) and large front porch and a new lawn with gas fire pit shaded by gorgeous old trees. Some of the rooms and grounds offer partial views of the harbor where time will slowly pass as you watch the boats come and go. 10 bedrooms with 7 bathrooms means plenty of room for the whole family without long wait times to take a shower! The charming home was renovated a few years ago to include a new kitchen, 2 new bathrooms and brand new furnishings to ensure you have a very comfortable stay. We offer one of the best per room/per night fees or per person/per night of any large rental in York Harbor. We also have a "sister" property - The Briars at Homeaway - #4035882 that is just a few doors away. Both have a long history of exceptional reviews.

Our home is in an ideal spot to enjoy the sought after environs of York Harbor. Guests can easily walk to the Harbor Beach known for its family friendly atmosphere. The Cliff Walk starts at the Harbor Beach and offers spectacular views of the rocky Maine coast and stunning Victorian mansions. The Hartley Mason estate is a beautiful public park overlooking the Harbor Beach with flower gardens and plenty of shade from the summer sun. Moulton Park is 2 minutes down the street from us with a fantastic space for any outdoor activity with lots of sun and shade. The Fisherman’s Walk is steps away where you stroll along the river and enjoy views of the boats coming in and out of the harbor – including lobsterman with their fresh catch of the day. Fisherman’s walk brings you to the Wiggly Bridge-Steadman Woods where you can take a loop through the forest or continue walking to the historic York Village. York Village (less than five minutes away by car in case you lost track of how long you’ve been walking) was settled in 1624 (3 years after Plymouth Plantation!) and offers a rich array of historical buildings (e.g Old Gaol – one of the oldest jails in America; a one room school house; Jefferds Tavern; The Old Burying Ground featuring 18th-19th century carved tombstones; and the John Hancock Warehouse etc.).

The Harbor is rich in culture and fine dining. The York Art Association is located a few houses down the street from us. George Marshall store gallery is located through the Steadman Woods and has a series of art exhibits during the year (the curator lives down the street from our house). There are other small galleries and shops in the Village. York Harbor Inn, Stage Neck Inn, and Chapman Cottage each offer award winning dining and are all a five minute walk from our home. The Dockside Restaurant is located across the harbor (five minute drive away) and is a great spot to view the marina and have a great meal. The marina offers boat and kayak rentals for those wishing to experience some “ocean” culture.

The York area and surrounding towns offer a never ending list of things to do. Visit lighthouses. Go whale watching. Explore forts and historical sights. Enjoy the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. Hike Mt. Agamenticus for breathtaking views of the ocean to the east and forest/mountains to the west (you can also drive to the top if you are feeling lazy and visit the nature exhibit in the old ski lodge). Shop at the Kittery Outlets (save this for those rainy days). Visit the York Beach boardwalk with an amusement park, bowling, arcade, shops, live entertainment, salt water taffy and more. Hiking-Biking-Boating-Sunbathing…or just reading a book in the many nooks of our beautiful home. You will love the relaxed pace of Maine. There is a reason our state motto is "Maine, the way life should be".

Looking to accommodate an even bigger group? Ask us about The Briars, our 8 bedroom home, located just a few doors away -- homeaway # 4035882. We also have a third property, with 6 bedrooms in very close proximity.

Convenient parking behind house; nearby areas for walking/nature viewing. The ocean was a short walk from the house with early morning views that were terrific. The house had lots of beds & a good number of bathrooms (all w/ shower/sink/toilet). The kitchen was a little tight when all of our cooks were working (!), but it was supplemented by an extra refrigerator in the garage. We loved the two sitting rooms for spreading out for discussion/reading/needlework.
On the front porch.

We all had a wonderful vacation at this beautiful house. There was plenty of room for all 18 of us. The house was very clean and decorated nicely. We spent lots of time enjoying the large front porch. The extra fridge was great to have with a large group. We loved the location because so close to the beach and to the fisherman's walk and wiggly bridge which we enjoyed several times. Lance was a great host and gave excellent tips on the area. Highly recommend!

Amazing home for two big families!!

We had a great time at your wonderful home! There was plenty of room for two big families to enjoy the long weekend! All the rooms were spacious and beautifully decorated. We loved relaxing on the front porch with views of the water and there is a great yard with a gas fire pit to enjoy at night. The York Harbor area has so much to do and great walks to enjoy right from the house. Lance was so nice and great to work with and we will definitely be back for another visit!

The House is in a great location!! Very easy to walk to the cliff walk the wiggly bridge, York harbor beach, and a few very nice restaurants. Short sands beach is a very short drive and is great for kids! It ha s a great playground, basketball courts, and a boardwalk with an arcade, restaurants, and shops. The beach there is wonderful!! The house itself is great. Lots of space! The fire pit area outside is very nice but I will say the 9pm quiet rule is a little early when on vacation.10pm would be a little more reasonable but we made it work. The kitchen is very well stocked with everything that you would need. Lance provides you with honestly everything... baby gates, high chairs, board games, yard games, beach towels, beach toys, coolers, wagons, beach chairs etc...He really is a wonderful host! I would rent the Varrel house again without question.

An Annual Fall tradition - perfect house and host

Thank you, Lance! It was a terrific home for 11 friends to spend an annual weekend together (18 years and going strong). Honestly, one of the best houses we've rented. A bed for everyone, bathrooms everywhere, clean and cozy. The renovated kitchen is well-supplied and all weekend meals enjoyed at the large dining table! A perfect gathering place for family and friends - we hope to return in future!

Lance was great. So helpful. Big roomy place. We had a 21 person family reunion and everyone was comfortable. Bedding could have been better, but kitchen was well equipped, plenty of space. Beautiful location for Maine, short walk to beach and the Cliff Walk and Fisherman Walk were nightly favorites. Lots of games and toys there too. Great job!

Wonderful Getaway

This house is beautiful, spacious, and well appointed. We had a great girls weekend in York. There was enough bedrooms and bathrooms for everyone. There was a great supply of beach and outdoor equipment at the house. The house is on a main road but you would never know it. It was a quiet and relaxing visit. Lance’s pre-welcome letter accumulated us to the area before we got there. Lance welcomed us on our check in day to make sure we were settled and had a plan for our visit. I would highly recommend staying here.

Perfect weekend!

From the moment I inquired about the house until our departure, Lance was overly accommodating. Local tips and quick replies to any and all questions I had. The house was clean, plenty of bedrooms and beds were comfortable. The yard was perfect for getting together and the fire pit had plenty of seating for a large group. The porch was a great place to sit and have coffee in the morning or a glass of wine at night. Kitchen and dining table were big enough for our pasta night with 15 ladies. The 2 living rooms were more than enough for all of us to congregate for games or chats. The house is a short walk to the beach and cliff walk with sidewalks for safety. The only negatives for us (and we're all in our upper 50's-70's) were the steep stairs to get to the 3rd floor suite. Just a little harder for older knees but nothing we couldn't do. The house is on a busier street than we would have liked. But nothing that would deter us from renting here again. The ensuite bathrooms and showers are extremely small if that matters to you. Plenty of parking, excellent communication and overall one of the better homes we've rented in 13 years!

Perfect house and setting for a family reunion!

This home was perfect for gathering together - from the spacious front porch, the two living rooms that connect, the large dining room which joins the kitchen that has a counter that seats 7, and the beautiful fire pit area - so many places within the house for all to socialize. Everyone was pleased with the bedrooms and bathrooms, and parking was not at all a problem. We had at least 8 vehicles, several of which were full-size pickup trucks and a Suburban. Communication with the owner was great and the house was well equipped. The York area provided abundant opportunities for exploring. Highlights for our group were the York Museum, the Take Flight ropes course, the Cliffwalk, Fisherman's Walk and Wiggly Bridge, Nubble Lighthouse, Mount Agamenticus for a gorgeous sunset, York Harbor Beach for a beautiful sunrise, and a favorite was doggie playtime on the beach at around 7:30 a.m., a fun, social time for both dogs and owners! (So if you are missing the pups you left at home, this is a great way to get your puppy-fix!) Ice cream parlors are in abundance - we found 3 with delicious flavors: Village Scoop, Dunne's, and Wicked Good Ice Cream. Not to be missed, especially for those who love free samples, are When Pigs Fly, an artisan bread store, and Stonewall Kitchen, which someone in our group called "a William-Sonoma on steroids" :-) Hannaford Supermarket is only a few minutes away and provides the Hannaford To Go shopping service, so the day before we arrived we submitted our order online for what we anticipated we would need throughout the week, and, when we arrived in York, we just picked up the order at the store. The store is well-stocked and is close enough that daily runs there to pick up needed items weren't a problem. Great house...Beautiful location...Fantastic vacation!

50th Birthday Celebration

This property became available through happenstance. The owner, Lance, has long standing guests who frequently return year after year. Due to this unexpected opportunity we were able to throw a surprise celebration for my partner. It was a glorious stay. Walking distance to the beach, and a local pub. Our interactions with Lance were top notch. In particular, he's very much invested in the community where he rents and takes extra steps to ensure his guests are happy and know how much he respects his neighbors. This was an unique location in York, and we were very thankful for this vacation.

Family Reunion

We had family coming from New Zealand, Michigan and Massachusetts to be together. Three generations were there to visit for a week. The house was perfect for this. We could walk to the beach and the garage was filled with toys, chairs and boogie boards. We had family meals in the large dining room and outside. There were plenty of spacious rooms and bathrooms for everyone. The front porch was the gathering spot for coffee and late afternoon chats. Lance gave us all kinds of helpful information and made our stay especially comfortable and fun!!Highly recommend this beautiful home.

The house was perfect for our family of 23, ranging in age from 4 months to 80 years. There were beds for all of us and plenty of space to gather together in the living rooms, dining room and kitchen. We utilized the grill and fire pit in the back yard. It was great to have the beach towels and toys for the kids. Lance was very responsive and quickly resolved a couple requests.

I was born in York and raised just down the street from this beautiful home. I spent countless hours/days playing in the neighborhood -- exploring fun spots such as the Harbor Beach, Cliff Walk, Fisherman's Walk, Wiggly Bridge-Steedman Woods, Moulton Park just to name a few! As a boy I delivered newspapers and mowed lawns in the neighborhood (including mowing this lawn when it was the Canterbury House!). In my late teens/early college years, I worked in Stage Neck Inn which is a five minute walk away. I was married at the Dockside Guest Quarters located at the mouth of the harbor where the river meets the ocean. Two of my three kids were born in York Hospital. Needless to say, my heart, soul and spirit are woven into this area.

I understand the needs of families/groups who are looking to rent a home. I've been renting homes to tourists in York and other towns for nearly twenty years. I've lived abroad three times and travelled to over 60 countries on six continents. I have three young kids and we've stayed in rental properties all over the world and we know how to make a home a great experience for visitors!

I'm happy to help as you plan your trip. I've got 40+ years of experience in the area -- I know all the popular stuff as well as plenty of "off the beaten" path and local spots.

Why they chose this property

This property was originally built to cater to visitors coming from all over the world to enjoy York Harbor and the surrounding area. The home has been a guest house and bed/breakfast over the years. During the winter of 2017 -- we are renovating the entire kitchen and two bathrooms, painting many rooms and furnishing the entire house with beautiful pieces. The home sits on one of the largest lots in the harbor and we putting in a new/enlarged lawn for our guests to enjoy.

What makes this property unique

You will love the charm of this century old home -- plenty of gathering space for your group. A beautiful living room with adjoining sitting room separated by French doors giving you the flexibility to spend time together as one big group or give kids/adults their own space. Great front porch to watch the beachgoers come and go. Great yard for playing games and a fire pit for evening fun.
