Here is a description of the farmhouse and property where you will be staying:
*Yellowhammer Tower
Enjoy your morning coffee as the sun rises over the farm from high atop Yellowhammer Tower. The garden tower overlooks the summer flower and vegetable garden where you may pick your own sunflowers or zinnias. Magical stargazing by night is truly unbelievable. Without all the ambient lights of the city you feel like you can reach up and touch the stars in the clear, country night sky. Pull the rope to ring the dinner bell to call the family from the pond for dinner.
*Songbird Story Farmhouse
Our authentic, nearly century-old farmhouse has been completely reworked with all modern amenities, but with the original tongue-n-groove ceilings and walls and fireplace. Painted in the colors of the 1940’s/50’s/60’s and decorated with vintage décor, furniture, and pictures of the era, it feels like you are stepping back in time to grandmother’s house. Our authentic Hoosier cabinet with flour sifter, cedar bed frame, wooden dry ice box, wringer washing machine, Singer sewing machine, vessel bathroom sink on cedar slab, tin-walled walk-in shower, dining table, dressing table, and “retro” refrigerator are a few of the items that have led some to describe it as the ‘cracker barrel hotel.’
We have a full kitchen, refrigerator, oven, microwave, toaster and kitchen utensils.
Cozy up by the fireplace. Hotel quality mattresses and linens make for a comfortable bed and a place to truly unwind.
Enjoy family photographs and scrapbook clippings from the local area from decades past. Learn about farm life during the 1940’s and 50’s, how Songbird Story got its name as well as the history of the General Store that the original residents once built and operated beside the farmhouse. Read about the perseverance and faith of the family who made this farm their home.
*Mockingbird Gazebo
Relax under the shade of Mockingbird Gazebo by day while listening to the songbirds that have made the farm their home for centuries. Rocking chairs, a small dining table, authentic upright piano, firepit, outdoor furniture, grill, and cornhole toss make this the perfect place to enjoy the sweeping countryside views and summer flower garden. Enjoy an evening by the firepit before snuggling in the hotel quality mattresses and linens for a peaceful night’s sleep!
*Walking trails, Pond, and Forest
Take Songbird Story Express (golf cart), ride bicycles, or travel the Old Mill Run trail by foot to the pond and forest. Bring your fishing pole. The pond is well-stocked with blue gill and sunfish. Deer, cranes, and racoons like to visit the pond frequently. Feed the fish with the provided fish food. Relax on the cedar benches located around the pond. *Note: Driver’s license and insurance required to use the golf cart. Walk the wooded trail. Explore moss-covered trees and rabbit holes. Experience nature in a private setting.
*Garden, Grounds, and Farm
Greet the day with your morning coffee from the front porch bench, Cardinal Nook underneath the grapevine, or the back porch. Feed the donkeys – Missy and Minnie- if you like. Snooze the afternoon away under the century-old oak tree while the donkeys graze in the beautiful sunset slowly sinking in the pastures.
The backyard is huge with the additional pond and forest area.
Enjoy the summer flower and vegetable garden with butterflies to greet you! Discover the heirloom shrubs, giant oak, tulip poplar and hickory trees on the farmhouse grounds.
Hang clothes out on the old-fashioned clothes line if you like. (Note: We dry all of the linens in the dryer for guests due to allergies.)
Located in the midst of the North Alabama Birding Trail, the farm boasts many species of birds. Sightings include the American Eagle and barn owl as well as the regulars – Yellowhammer (Northern Flicker), mockingbird, blue bird, robin, blue jay, finch, cardinals, crane, crows, wild geese, red tailed hawk, and wren, among others.
Songbird Story Farmhouse is located on Alabama State Highway 71 and is the entry point to the farm. The owners and Songbird Story guests share a driveway entrance. The farmhouse and garden tower are visible at a distance from the owner’s home. The barn at the very back of the Garden Tower is occasionally frequented by the owners to conduct normal farm work. Donkeys and cows live in the pastures surrounding the farmhouse. For a step back in time – and to write a new chapter in your story - visit us at Songbird Story Farmhouse and Garden Tower!

About the host
Hosted by Greg Millican
Lesa is a retired elementary school teacher who enjoys cooking. She enjoyed decorating the farmhouse with vintage decor. Greg currently teaches and did much of the recent renovation work to the farmhouse.
Time with our family is special. We hope the farmhouse will provide guests with a place to reconnect with family and faith in a home that is very special to us.
We have enjoyed creating a "storybook" stay for our guests with a trip back in time to a "simpler" era - 1940's rural Alabama.

Why they chose this property
Songbird Story Farmhouse is the home that Greg’s grandparents built in the 1940’s. It has been fully restored and contains the best of the old but with modern amenities.
The backyard Garden Tower presents guests with sweeping views of the farm. The fully stocked private fishing pond is within walking distance of the farmhouse. Songbird Story Express (golf cart) provides guests with private transportation around the farm during their stay.
Cedar slab benches around the wooded pond area are a relaxing escape.
We are 10 minutes from dining and centrally located to Mentone, Fort Payne, and Scottsboro. We are 45 minutes from Chattanooga and two hours from Atlanta, Birmingham, and Nashville.
Greg and Lesa lived in the farmhouse after they married in 1991 then built a home on the farm a few years later. The farmhouse provides wide open spaces and a countryside view.

What makes this property unique
Songbird Story Farmhouse is an authentic vintage home. Constructed during World War II of sawmill grade timber, the farmhouse contains some original pieces of furniture. The rooms are painted in colors of the 1940’s and 1950’s.
The tongue-and-groove pine from a late 1800’s/early 1900’s community barn still cover the living room walls and ceiling.
The fireplace is original to the home as is the stonework.
A scrapbook/photo album for guests contains the history of the 40 acre farm and general store that Greg’s grandparents built and operated in the 1950’s.
The loving restoration of the farmhouse included modern amenities and a newly constructed back yard gazebo and garden tower for viewing the countryside by day and stargazing by night.
