Amazing Property and Location

This was an awesome location and we had a wonderful time staying here. We stayed here as a part of our honeymoon and it did not disappoint. The fruit trees were great to walk through and we were given a long list of recommendations for adventures on the island. We would highly recommend staying here!

Awesome stay, great host!

We loved this little room, felt like a hotel! The host and his dogs were very welcoming and inviting. I was impressed by the amount of information that the host put into his welcome book. Tons of recommendations for food and activities! We found that very helpful!

Cottage in Coffee Country

We greatly enjoyed our days at this cottage in coffee country. The hosts were readily available with information and suggestions. We’ve been at this location several times now to enjoy peaceful days. It’s a perfect base from which to launch island explorations. We’ll miss the froggie chorus chirping us to sleep. Highly recommended for our needs.

Very charming excellent host

The cottage was very sweet with all the comforts one would require for a very comfortable stay. The bed was excellent and the general location was pretty central to all of our activities. The dogs are super friendly and love attention. Overall the place was super clean and well maintained. We would definitely use this booking again. Thanks Terry and Jim.

A little piece of paradise

Close enough to what you may need in Kailua-Kona but far enough from the beaten path that you know you're away from it all. Property has a nice little orchard on the grounds and plenty of birds to keep you feeling like you're in a rain forest. Great location.

Cozy spot for two in Captain Cook coffee country

We had a wonderful relaxing stay here. Hosts were great, everything was clean, functional, as advertised. Close to some of our favorite spots on the island. Beautiful view from the property (requires a 40 foot walk from the VRBO). Best to arrive during daylight as it could be difficult to find after dark until you know where it is.

Phenomenal

Property accurately described. Hosts were spectacular. Plenty of supplies provided, more than expected. No surprise rules on arrival. Easy to get along with host, spot-on communication. Highly recommend this little pineapple patch. Wonderful stay. Friendly, and inviting.

Coming back. I hope.

Directions were clear and easy to follow. I do recommend a fu)y daylight arrival. The cottage was spotless but not stuffy. The frogs tended to take every other night off. They are loud, and entertaining. The cottage and that whole area was beautiful. I highly recommend it

February 2024 stay

Overall an enjoyable stay. Made good use of the orchard out back and really liked this part of South Kona. I would get a car with a little more clearance next time due to the steep driveway; we scraped the bottom of the Nissan sedan a couple of times at the top, but no damage. The hosts were pleasant to deal with. I have already recommended this listing to friends.

Fabulous in every way

I can’t overstate how perfect our stay here was. Location is perfect to access the best snorkelling sites in the whole of Hawaii. The view from the property is breathtaking. There are some excellent cafes and restaurants all within 10 minutes drive so there is no need to drive into Kailua (which we chose only to do once because it can get very traffic heavy) . our host Jim was a pleasure to meet and was so very helpful and informative on local attractions and his dining suggestions were perfect. I would not hesitate to highly recommend this place to everyone and we are already dreaming of a return trip !

paradise in captain cook

had a fantastic time at jim and terrys ohana house ..i was there for the geminids and the dark skies were on point! house was as cute as can be, and there was a parking space.. i was able to pick some oranges from behind the house, and got all kinds of adorable attention from their two dogs kona and bennie. location was great as a starting point for the shaka guide tours i had downloaded, and jim had all kinds of locals only suggestions that gave me a next level immerse experience. thanks so much Jim for sharing your place and your time with me, answering my questions and giving great suggestions! i will definitely be back.

Gorgeous Cottage, friendly host

This was a great find. The Pineapple Patch Cottage was very clean. Fresh fruit was a bonus and we were able to pick our own ripe oranges from trees in back. Jim gave us very good directions that we were able to follow arriving after dark. He also provided many suggestions on food, sights, and things to do that were not just local but on the entire island. Although our stay was only for 2 nights, we used the tips for our entire two week island stay. We would have no reservations about renting here again. Mahalo.

Good times in rural Hawaii

The studio apartment off the garage provided a sweet place from which to enjoy a relaxing visit to Hawai’i. Our hosts were friendly and helpful, and the space was perfect for what we needed. We recommend showing up in daylight. We arrived after dark and—even with the very detailed instructions provided—had a hard time finding it. The rural Hawaiian roads are just to dark to see much. Other than that initial hiccup, it was lovely.

Cozy spot with a view.

The place is quiet and simple. It's clean and there is provided beach towels/chairs and some snorkel gear. This room is part of a detached garage so you have privacy but are close enough to the host if you have any issues (I had none). There isn't quite a full kitchen, but plenty of stuff to make full meals if you are wanting to cut some costs with dining out. Jim is also a fantastic and compassionate host. When people say that you should "live with aloha"...they are talking about Jim. If every host were like him then there would be zero complaints about any booking service.

We had a wonderful stay! The host was responsive, welcoming, and truly thought of everything. The kitchen was very well-stocked, which made cooking so easy. The location is perfect! Close to Captain Cook and 2 Step Beach, which is hands down the best snorkeling on the island. We also loved the outdoor shower surrounded by jasmine-scented flowers—it was such a relaxing way to end each day. Would absolutely stay here again!

About the host

Hosted by Jim Martin

Host profile image
We had been coming to South Kona for 15 years when we acquired the property early in 2013. We have been residents for three years, now.
Jim is a retired theatre artist/social worker/educator/student, and Terry owns his own business in international shipping. Jim stays more or less permanently in South Kona, while Terry is still working. He comes and goes regularly.
We have a 6-year old dog, Kona. She came over from LA over two years ago, and she is now a local girl.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with South Kona and the expansive views of the coast and the sea - as well as the myriad of activities the area presents. We bought a lot very close to the house and cottage and are considering expanding the orchard. We are not only the happy owners of a beautiful Hawaiian home, but we are mango farmers, tending a 30-tree mango orchard on our property.

What makes this property unique

We are in an ideal location for R&R after a day of Big Island activities - whatever your pleasure, be it snorkeling or diving in Kealakekua or Honaunau Bay, cycling, hiking, sight-seeing, coffee tasting or just experiencing Aloha! The area is very quiet and we have lovely neighbors. We are two drives down from Napo'opo'o Road so road noise is non-existent. We are surrounded by birds and lush vegetation. Kona polices the property, and keeps the wild chickens and turkeys away - usually. They can be brazen.
