About this property
Rusty Flatts-Countryside Retreat Just Outside Grand Island – Sleeps 1 to 8
Welcome to our newly remodeled countryside retreat, located just minutes from Grand Island, Nebraska. Thoughtfully updated from top to bottom in 2025, this home blends modern comfort with rustic charm, making it the perfect getaway for families, small groups, or anyone looking for peace and quiet less than 4 miles off of interstate 80 and 2 miles from the new hospital just outside of the city limits. Located along a paved blacktop road, you will have no issues with keeping your vehicles clean during your stay. The home sleeps up to 8 guests and includes three bedrooms plus a loft area. Two bedrooms have king beds, one has a queen bed, and the loft features another queen bed. All furnishings and finishes are either brand new or fully restored. The west-facing deck is a favorite spot to relax, offering beautiful sunset views and the chance to see deer, turkeys, and quail across the property’s two scenic acres. Let's not forget the perfect place to view the star lit skies away from the city lights. Along with all of that, keep in mind you will need to book early for spring Sandhill Crane migration as this location is absolutely as good as it gets for the amateur or professional crane migration follower. Inside, you’ll find open living and dining areas that make it easy to gather together, with large windows that bring in natural light and frame the countryside views. For kids—or anyone who enjoys movie nights and games—there’s a dedicated gaming room with a 50-inch TV. The property also offers plenty of parking space for trailers, RVs, or boats. With advance notice, a pen for horses or livestock could be arranged if you are traveling with them. However we do not allow any pets, service or support inside the home to assure a dander free environment for those who have allergies to animals. While the setting is very quiet and private, Grand Island is only a short 5 minute drive away for shopping, dining, and events. Whether you’re visiting family, attending a local event, or simply need a relaxing escape, this countryside home combines space, comfort, and country charm in a way you won’t find in a hotel. For your security and ours we do have 1 ring security camera located on the south side of the home facing into the driveway under the eave to the right of the south French doors. It does not have any view of the interior of the home in any way. It does not compromise any privacy during your stay as we want you to feel comfortable and safe in every way. ( Instructions to turn it off during your stay are on the Refridgerator door in the kitchen if you do not want it on. ) Like our VRBO we have in the Black Hills of South Dakota ( # 483555 ) we have went over and above to make this a home that will for sure make your stay as comfortable as possible while you are our guest large or small.

About the host
Hosted by Kevin Houtwed / Karen Houtwed
We live less than 3 miles from this location on the south edge of Grand Island, making it very easy to get in touch with us, while visiting this country cabin. We are a family that loves to find old things and give them new life through restoration or by using them to decorate as they are. You will see the 1951 Ford pickup in the front yard when you pull into the driveway. This old truck was my neighbors back on the farm where I grew up in Ruskin, Nebraska. As early as I remember I watched this truck drive by our farmyard on those old bumpy gravel roads. My wife grew up in Dodge City, Kansas where she came from a large family of 8. She is retired from teaching school. She taught English and secondary resource for well over 30 years. Myself, I own a company called Hotwood's. We manufacture many things including pontoon boats, docks and wire winders for livestock fencing. I started that in college and have owned it now for 38 years. We are both very happy to share this newly remodeled cabin with you and hope you will find it as your home away from home.
Why they chose this property
We chose this area because of the countryside setting that has wide-open pastures on 2 sides and a wooded area across the road. It is truly a very unique location as you can have turkeys and deer in the yard every night. One of my favorite things to do is sit on the top deck watching the sun fall from the sky and listen to the bobwhite quail calling to covey for the evening while the coyotes are howling off in the distance as the night grows near. It is like being a long way out in the country when you are really only 2 minutes from the new hospital or 6-7 minutes from shopping and some of the best restaurants you could ever want. And do not forget we are also less than 10 minutes from the Nebraska State Fairgrounds and Casino. This property also offers a small pasture that we really enjoy and also gives us plenty of room to park trailers or ride your horse if you are traveling with one. There is so many reasons we chose this property to build and create a VRBO that it is hard to explain, so we will let you tell us after you have enjoyed your stay.
What makes this property unique
The most unique thing here, is the fact that you are so close to everything, but yet a thousand miles from the public. It really feels that way as we both like rural settings, we also like to be close to the action and this home gives you just that. You will find very nice artwork on the walls along with items like the old trunk on the loft, that was the very trunk my grandmothers family brought everything they owned from Sweden to Ellis Island in the mid 1800's. The old school desks we restored and use for night stands. These were purchased in 1984 when Ruskin High School had their auction. I paid 50 cents a piece for them. You will find a lot of interesting items and antiques at this property when you make it your home away from home.
