Why Upcountry? Why Makawao?
Makawao is Maui’s soulful sweet spot — full of heart, history, and natural beauty. With its paniolo (cowboy) roots and cool evening air, it offers a refreshing contrast to the coast and a wonderful starting point for every kind of island experience.
From here, you’re well-positioned for:
🌅 Sunrise skies or stargazing nights atop Haleakalā
🌊 North Shore beaches, surf towns, and sea turtle sightings
🛤 Forest hikes, refreshing waterfalls, and local markets
🌾 Farm tours, Jungle zip lining and live music as the sun dips into the sea
🖼 Art galleries, boutique shops, and fresh island dining
🌺 The road to Hāna — where beauty unfolds around every bend
Makawao Inn invites you to slow down, share deeply, and make memories that live on — in stories, in senses, and in spirit.
We look forward to welcoming you with care and aloha.
Guests have full private access to the main house, including all four bedrooms, three bathrooms, living room, kitchen, lanai, and gardens.
Please note: The host resides quietly in a separate, self-contained unit on the far side of the inn. You may occasionally see her or a helper tending to the gardens or outdoor areas. The laundry facility, located outside the main house, is shared with the host and helpers and is always used with care for your comfort and privacy.
Helpers live in cottages in the back corner behind the inn and generally keep to themselves unless tending to the inn or gardens.
You may also cross paths with Iwa, the friendly resident pup, who stays close to the host and loves greeting guests with aloha.
We’re here for you. Please don’t hesitate to call or text if I or one of my wonderful helpers can support you in any way.
It’s our joy to help set the stage for you to create magical memories.
After all, what’s the value of a memory?
It’s priceless… 🌈
Historically a paniolo town (cowboy town), Makawao is a charming and picturesque place with a laid back yet elegant vibe. It is known for its unique boutiques, art galleries and restaurants, surrounded by lush rolling hills and scenic vistas. A taste of old Hawaii. Makawao Inn is a 14 minute walk to the heart of Makawao Town. We are tucked away on a half acre in a peaceful neighborhood. Eddie Tam community center with a running track, basket ball courts and tennis courts is a 5 minute walk away.
Since Maui has so many extraordinary place to explore, we think it's best you have a car. We have plenty of onsite parking.
However, if you prefer public transportation there is a bus stop just a 2 minute walk away.
This is a soulful, vintage inn built in 1924 —quiet, grounded, and full of charm.
Guests often say they feel something special here… a slower rhythm, a deep exhale. If you're looking for connection to nature, history, and heartfelt hospitality, you'll feel right at home.
You may feel the land here.
We’re nestled in upcountry Maui, where misty mornings, birdsong, and stars greet you. If you're sensitive to energy, you may sense the mana—the quiet power—of this place.
Makawao is a small town with a big heart.
While it has charming shops and cafés, it's still a sleepy village at night. Perfect for early risers, nature lovers, and those looking to rest, write, or wander.
The inn attracts kind, respectful travelers.
As hosts, we cultivate a peaceful environment. We find guests naturally align with that energy—and we love welcoming those who appreciate it too.
