About this property

Cozy Monterey Family Chalet, Minutes From Lake & 10 Minutes From Butternut!

This beautiful gem has been lovingly cared for by our family for almost 20 years—and has served as a relaxing retreat all year round. Our goal: to make you feel like it's your home away from home. It's comfortably furnished and tastefully decorated in the French country style—and is the perfect spot to relax or use as a home base for all your Berkshire activities.

It is family-friendly with child gates for the stairs—and plenty of games, toys, books, and movies for your children. No kids? These things are tucked away so you don't need to use them if you don't want!

There are 2 bedrooms upstairs: one master with a king-size bed and one smaller bedroom with a twin bed and pull-out twin bed. There is one downstairs bathroom. An open downstairs floor plan flows from the living room (with a wood-burning stove fired up by plenty of wood we have stored for you), to the kitchen to the dining room.

There's a super comfy pull-out sofa with a queen-size bed in the living room if you need extra space for your family or friends.

Off the dining room is the beautiful screened-in porch where you can sit for hours relaxing and enjoying the breeze and sounds of the Loom Brook from the back of the house. A connected deck allows for easy grilling with the gas grill.

In the summer, our house is just minutes from Lake Garfield, where there's a lake beach perfect for kids and adults alike! A lifeguard is present during the summer months—making it perfect for swimming out to the floating docks (it will bring back camp memories!). You can also canoe and kayak on this lake. We have sand toys, beach umbrellas, and chairs ready for your use. Love to hike? The Appalachian Trail crosses our road, which is perfect for walking any time of the year. We're also situated right near the Beartown State Forest with all its trails. Love to mountain bike? We have one bike available for your use; feel free to bring up your own bikes and ride along our dirt road — or on the nearby trails.

We're also close (about 20 minutes) to blueberry picking and apple picking.

We're 40 minutes from Tanglewood, 45 minutes from Jacob's Pillow, and just 25 minutes from the town of Great Barrington with its restaurants, bars, Triplex cinema, and the historic Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center.

Fall brings the beautiful splendor of the fall foliage home here; it surrounds the house and everywhere you turn. Go for walks, take in kayaking or canoeing on Lake Garfield, or just take a visit to the nearby Taft Farms for their pumpkins, fresh cider and hot donuts, and corn mazes.

Our home is just 15 minutes from Butternut Ski Resort, which is where our children have learned to ski from age 3. It's the perfect family resort and our home is close enough to put season's passes (or just one-day passes) to good use. You'll love coming home to the warmth of the wood stove and the comfort of our home. We also have snow shoes available for your use.

We are minutes from the town of Monterey, which is small but quaint. We are also just minutes from the Roadside Cafe, the perfect country diner for breakfast, lunch, and dinner Wednesday through Saturday. (There's also Great Barrington, Stockbridge, Lee, and Lenox—as well as Pittsfield...which is 45 minutes away...for more delicious restaurants.)

We are about a 25-minute drive from the outlets in Lee, about 30 minutes to Stockbridge (with the quaint and historic Red Lion Inn) and Lenox with Miraval Resort and Wyndhurst Manor & Club (where you can play golf), the Kripalu Yoga Center, and Tanglewood (as well as Canyon Ranch).

Pets are allowed by individual request.

Upgraded Internet (2020), with two satellite dishes, allows for more Internet surfing, Zoom calls, and at-home work. An additional DISH satellite offers more than 100 channels on the TV.

Our goal: to have you fall in love with our home just as much as we love it. We want you to feel this is your Monterey home away from home!

What a lovely retreat! We needed a home base for 48 hours of exploring the Berkshires and this was a perfect spot. We had a fantastic brunch at the Roadside Cafe and a yummy dinner at Cafe Adam in nearby Great Barrington. This home was a nice location for day tripping to multiple nearby state parks for hiking and birding and was a quiet, well apportioned spot for an easy - if short - stay. I only wish we could have had a longer visit … perhaps next time!

Cozy, comfortable, clean

This is my second time renting the chalet. Peaceful and quiet just down the road from the newly rebuilt Roadside Cafe and Beartown State Forest. Lots of great hiking or swimming around Benedict Pond. From the moment I stepped into the house I never wanted to leave! I will be back as often as I can.

Stayed to hike in the area and visit family. Grateful for the communication around wildfires in the area, and very glad we came. Short drive into Great Barrington for dinners and comfortable accommodations.

Cozy House

We enjoyed our recent 4 day stay. We had a great time hiking numerous trails in the area including the trails behind the house from the Boswell House Museum. The house was very cozy, and very well stocked with everything one would need. The king bed was very comfortable. Thank you Valerie!

Beautiful little cottage

Beautiful little cottage with an amazing back porch! Everything you could possibly need has been provided and directions were clear and easy to follow. We loved the wood burning stove! It was a great home base while my husband and I explored the Berkshires. We can’t wait to come back for another awesome visit.

Berkshire annual escape

Our annual Berkshire (anniversary) escape was another one NOT to be forgotten, and this cozy camp was perfect for us. Close to all the hiking trails, shopping, and of course all the restaurants. Our time while at the property was mostly spent out on the beautiful screened porch enjoying some wine. Thank you so much!!

Beautiful, peaceful setting yet close to all Berkshire attractions

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the cottage. It was beautifully and tastefully decorated, clean and filled with everything we could need. Families will also find books and toys and athletes will be able to use kayaks and bikes. We really enjoyed relaxing in the large screen porch--like camping but in one's livingroom--overall a great experience!

Our favorite retreat

As before, we can’t say enough wonderful things about Valerie and the Owl’s Nest! A clean, inviting, cozy place to stay and enjoy nature in all its glory. There is so much to see in the area. Valerie uses all organic products throughout her house, is very responsive, and thinks of everything. If you look through the library of books and magazines, you’ll not only find enjoyable things to do and learn about the Berkshires, you’ll find ways to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Thank you for another enjoyable visit!!

Charming little cottage

The property was deep in the woods and very serene. Our only complaint was the internet service. Limited time and speed meant it was a challenge to get our work done. And we never expected to have absolutely no cell service. The combination made our stay a little challenging.

Wonderful Thanksgiving Retreat

As we couldn't visit family this Thanksgiving, we decided to turn the long weekend into a mini (socially distant) vacation, and this was a wonderful place to do it. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare our feast, and the quiet woods was a perfect backdrop for our Thanksgiving dinner. We have a 2 and 4 year old and they absolutely loved the place - there are a huge number of toys, books and games to keep them happy , and a fabulous creek to romp around in. We did do a few hikes - at the Audubon's Lime Kiln Wildlife Sanctuary and at the Tyringham Cobble Park - both of which were a perfect distance for little ones (2 miles), and offered fabulous views. Valerie was a fabulous host and clearly goes above and beyond for her guests. We would love to go back, just to spend more time on that fabulous porch - it was a little too chilly to sit out there this time around. Thanks so much!

About the host

Hosted by Valerie Latona

Host profile image
The owners, Valerie and David, bought this home as their city getaway almost 20 years ago. It's since been their home away from home for their family (including their three young children). They fell in love with the Berkshires because of the amazing hiking trails, beautiful lakes, culture, delicious food, and friendly people—all of which are easily accessible from their home.

Why they chose this property

We have raised all three of our children in this second home away from home; they've learned to love the country and all the delights of the Berkshires here. While we still come up for them to play at the lake, go hiking, enjoy the fall foliage, and ski at Butternut, we find that we use it less than we ever did (thanks to kids sports and weekend activities), why we decided to share our home with others. Our goal: to give you a chance to love the Berkshires the way we do.

What makes this property unique

While small, our home is extremely comfortable and cozy. You can sit on the couch with your feet up and feel at home. You can go out the front door and walk down the road to clear your mind. But what we love most of all is our screened-in porch, where we sit for hours reading, playing games, and eating our meals. A short or long stay in our home will refresh your batteries and invigorate you.
