About this property

Private Oceanfront Condo Punaluu Black Sand Beach

Welcome to your home away from home, Hale Ke Kai, “where the land and sea meet.” You will come to find out why so many local residents and visitors call it one of the best units at Colony I. We feel honored to have the opportunity to show you the reasons so many have fallen in love with the islands. Those reasons are here to be found in abundance.
The Big Island is our home and we go to great lengths to help you feel at home too. This spacious and beautifully furnished one bedroom condo is single level with absolutely no steps. Although it is considered a condo, there are no upstairs or downstairs neighbors, only the back wall of the closet is shared. Hale KeKai is unit #23 at the Sea Mountain Resort. The lanai (patio) is very private. Speaking of the lanai, “Wow!” is the usual response. Sweeping unobstructed ocean views that blend gently without interruption into an incredible mountain view. This is Hawaii, your Hawaii.
A high quality king size bed in the master bedroom will combine with the soft breezes and gentle lull of the waves to bring calm wondrous dreams of the beauty of the real Hawaii. The living and dining areas also have sweeping ocean views and are outfitted tastefully yet comfortably as this is as much our home as yours. The living area also boasts a fold out sofa bed that we have slept on ourselves and is very comfortable.
The kitchen with range, oven, microwave, full size fridge, coffee/espresso maker, dishwasher, and small appliances is well stocked with quality flat ware, a variety of teas, and condiments and spices to get you started on the meal of your choice.
The bathroom has a cavernous granite tiled shower that is an easy step inside. We love every corner of this place and believe you will too.
Enjoy some world famous Ka’u Coffee on the lanai or hang out at the pool or hot tub with new found friends, either way you will be glad to have found one of the world’s hidden gems. Punaluu Black Sand Beach, consistently voted one of the Top Ten Black Sand Beaches in the World, is only a few minutes’ walk away. Sunbathe beneath the palms, snorkel with turtles, or watch them haul up on the beach. For the more adventuresome, hike out either direction and re-discover Hawaiian historical sites (please show due respect to all archaeological sites and observe proper viewing distance and rules regarding all marine creatures).
Hale Ke Kai is perfect for any family or couple seeking the trip of a lifetime. A secluded, yet accessible wonder that will be remembered.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is only 30 minutes away, making Punaluu the closest ocean front lodging. Hike the volcano by day and relax in the hot tub under the stars by night. The pool and hot tub have wonderful ocean views and you can barbeque fresh island fish or local grass fed beef on one of the quality barbeques next to the pool.
Our special vision for Hale Ke Kai is for people who may be less able to travel to have the chance to visit one of the best kept secrets in the world…and be comfortable. Hale Ke Kai has no steps, no stairs, just a little bump at the front and sliding doors. This means couples where one partner is movement impaired or a family with aging parents can still share moments of beauty and peace. Our goal is for every family member, including children, to feel safe and at home. Should you or your loved one have special needs, please contact us, we will make every attempt to accommodate your needs.

A few minutes from the turtles at Punalu’u Black Sand Beach and an easy drive to Punalu’u Bake Shop and South Point. The pool area is beautiful and a great alternative if swimming at the beach is too rough and rocky.

First time on Hawaii

The facility is beautifully maintained. Quiet, definitely off the beaten path. Would have appreciated higher quality kitchen essentials and cookware, and more attention to cleaning details. Very comfortable space and loved the view from the patio.

We had a HUGE spider in the bathroom, lizards throughout condo, aged furniture (not furniture in photos), dirty refrigerator, and bird droppings inside the front door.

Comfort and relaxation

We were able to have quiet relaxation yet enjoy all of what the island boasts. Close to see the Kīlauea eruption twice! Found the Punaluu Bakery and the turtles on the beach. Jeff was always quick to respond and cared to check on our needs.

Wonderful stay

Beautiful place, perfect lay out of rooms with south-facing patio. Neighbors next door, but patio was very private. Pool was great for the kids. Black sand beach is wonderful, saw lots of green turtles. Best bakery ever in the nearest village.

Nice Out of the Way Place

This is a nice quiet place on the south end if the island close to the black sand and green sand beaches. It is a great place to relax and a good place to serve as home base when exploring the island. This unit has great view from the back patio.

This was the third leg of a two weeks stay, so our review is colored by our other two stays; after spending seven nights at a quiet ranch on the Kohala ridge and four nights off-grid south of Paoha, three nights at an older resort was... different. Please read our review understanding that; this place is perfect for some people, just not us. Wonderful and friendly employees, but the stay did not fully match the description. For example, the shower and bathroom sinks were recently replaced, but the rest of the unit is older, just like the property. Everything was clean and there were a lot of supplies in the kitchen, but it seems like the owners must not have looked in the cupboards in a while; for example, the one skillet was so scratched that the anti-stick was gone down to the metal. The view of the lanai is wonderful but with little privacy; other people frequently stood twenty feet from our chairs. smoking away on the lawn (and then throwing their cigarette butts over the fence, in the dried grass. A bit unsettling for a forty year firefighting veteran.) The pool and hot tub area was impeccable, but I could not tell you how the water was in the tub: it was usually busy or completely full, especially in the evening when a group of younger folks (who seem to live in some units) occupied it while loudly pontificating about how mean the locals have been to them over the last year.We rented STVRs around the globe during more than two decades, so we have fact-based opinions.

Beautiful and Remote

Property was excellent minus 2 things. It has no air conditioning and is over an hour from any meaningful supplies. Absolutely great view and remote rural setting. The condo has everything you need. Jeff is a great host.

You can't beat the view

It was hard to leave this place. The view from the patio and from there nearby pool was everything I had hoped for. There wasn't any AC but with the fans running at night we slept very comfortable. Highly recommend for your trip to the big island!

Fabulous stay

Let's start with the owner Jeff - prior to our visit Jeff reached out and provided info regarding the unit, provided his contact info and welcomed any concerns or questions. When we arrived we were thrilled with the accommodations, location and amenities. This unit is an excellent place to stay and we would definitely be returning. Thank you!

Nice resort and host

We really enjoyed our stay at Hale Kekai. We had a tv problem and Jeff was quickly responsive in solving the issue. While it turned out to be unsolvable, it didn't impact our stay at all but he made it up to us regardless. The pool area is was never busy and had a beautiful view. We walked to the black sand beach and had a great time seeing the turtles. We would surely stay again!

Overall Positive Experience

We enjoyed our 10 day stay. The lanai and pool/hot tub area were highlights. The condo has a great bathroom and bedroom. Good washer/dryer. The kitchen could use an update but met our needs. For 3 days, property workers were somewhat disruptive with equipment stored outside the bedroom. Would have appreciated a few more basic amenities such as trash bags, ample hangers, more open drawer space, list of things nearby. Overall a good stay.

Peaceful retreat next to Punaluu beach

We enjoyed a lovely stay in this condo by Punaluu beach. It had everything we needed for a comfortable 4 day visit to the south side of the island. Very quiet and beautifully manicured condo complex on a retired golf course that is now beautifully overgrown. You can walk 10 min to the black sand beach to snorkel with turtles, or follow the coast line on a trail that goes for miles along a variety of landscapes. Good location to enable a long day at Volcano National Park withiut having to spend so much time driving to/from the park. This condo complex is more remote, but that is part of its charm, so make sure you get some supplies for cooking and making your own drinks in the condo so you can just settle in and enjoy.

Quiet, peaceful location!

We enjoyed a one week stay in this unit, a 2-bedroom, 1-bath condo. The owner has accented the home with nice touches, including art and cut flowers in the living room and dining room. It has a nice sized living room and dining room. The bedroom is large, with an on suite which is shared with the rest of the unit. The bed is very comfortable. The kitchen is small, and needs some item replacement, such as a mixing bowl set, a properly working can opener, enough matching glassware for more than two people, and a sharp knife set would be helpful.More lighting in the living room is needed. Perhaps 3-way bulbs in the lamps at both ends of the sofa, to make reading easier. I would love to see a larger television, sitting on top of the cabinet housing the current one.We loved the secluded, private lanai. It overlooks the former golf course and has a good view of the ocean, in the distance. The lanai area is fully under a new, expanded cover.

Great Anniversary Trip

My wife and I traveled to Punaluu as part of a special anniversary trip. The condo is comfortable and stocked with pretty much everything you need except food. The nearest real grocery store was about 30 minutes away. A few of the appliances could use updating, but the living room furniture is new and comfortable. We didn’t watch much television, but the one tv was small for a vacation rental. The condo is in a great location on the south end of the island, about 30 minutes from Volcanoes National Park, a little over an hour to either Hilo or Kona. The black sand beach, with it’s sea turtles, is only a 10 minute walk away. Jeff, the owner, was communicative and responded quickly when we needed him.

Beautiful location! Must stay!

This is an absolutely lovely property and location. I loved sitting on the patio and listening to the ocean and the birds in the morning and evenings. It’s close to Volcanoes National Park - it’s absolutely perfect if you plan to spend a lot of time in the park. We got up early each day and made it to the park by 7AM and had all the trails to ourselves. That alone is worth the stay. The black sand beach is within walking distance and you’ll see green sea turtles and nēnē wandering around. It feels a world away from any other part of the island. The condo was older but clean and well taken care of. Really, it’s perfect. We loved it so much and I hope we’ll come back again. Jeff was also wonderful. He stayed in touch and was always friendly. I really can’t recommend it enough! I wish we had stayed longer!

Relaxing Vacation

My husband and I came here to celebrate our retirement with a longer vacation to give us time to relax and enjoy Hawai'i. The condo was clean and was well stocked. The community pool area and grill were clean and gave us the opportunity to connect with other guests as well as local residents. The location is remote which is partly what we were looking for however, I didn't fully appreciate how remote it was. This made it a little more difficult to eat out and get groceries, travel times are definitely a lot longer here than back in Colorado. The unit temperature was comfortable with a combination of the breeze and fans. Some nights I was actually a little cold. It was great walking to the beach but the road can get busy at times. It is really quiet at night and the stars are amazing, we got to see the full moon over the water and it was gorgeous. Jeff was a great host and both checking in and out were very smooth. I would stay here again. Thank you.

Hale Kekai -- Wow, the views!

We really enjoyed staying at Hale Kekai! The hale was very private, very comfortable and well stocked which made it so easy for us to settle in. The gorgeous Hawaiian paintings and artwork added flair and character! The lanai was also very private with sweeping, unobstructed views of the ocean that were amazing! We liked to chill there, watching the sun rise, reading books, and eating meals. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking, and the coffee grinder was a welcome surprise. We found all the furniture to be very comfortable, too. We took several strolls down to Punalu’u Black Sand beach, and we referenced the Hale Kekai Insiders Guide to explore nearby historic sites and foot trails and other smaller beaches. Many thanks to Jeff, the owner, for researching and writing that guide and sharing it. What a treasure! During our stay Jeff was very responsive and kindly let us enjoy our last morning at the hale; no departing chores like many rentals require. Our 3-night stay was too, too short! Hope we can return in the future!

Big Island resident since the year 2000 and avid hiker/kayak adventurer who also enjoys the country life. I take great pride in my beautiful home at Punaluu and make every effort to help guests to feel at home too. Why they chose this property

If you seek the real Hawaiian experience, this is it. Hale Ke Kai at Colony One is smack in the middle of the longest undeveloped coastline in Hawaii. It also happens to be the closest oceanfront accommodations to Volcanoes National Park and is a few minutes walk to Punaluu Black Sand Beach. This is where we have been going to 'get away' for years.

What makes this property unique

The raw beauty of Hawaii surrounds Hale Ke Kai. Experience the stars and awesome views of the ocean, coast, and mountains without the noise, lights, and crowds. Truly one of the worlds' hidden gems.
