About this property
Gamla Apótekið (The Old Pharmacy) in heart of Akureyri
Gamla Apótekið (The old Pharmacy) is situated in the vibrant heart of Iceland's second-largest city Akureyri, or the capital of the North, renowned for its rich cultural scene, which includes captivating museums, art galleries, and theaters. The area features a delightful array of shops, cafes, and restaurants, offering both local and international cuisine. Surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, it serves as an excellent base for outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing. Just across the street, you'll find the famous ice cream shop Brynja—be sure to try the delicious "old ice cream." Within walking distance, the Akureyri Botanical Garden awaits, home to the charming coffee house List, which comes highly recommended.
Additionally, the best swimming pool in Iceland is nearby, along with a large World Class gym. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Forest Lagoon, another local favorite that we recommend!
Gamla Apótekið (The Old Pharmacy) was built in 1859 and was one of the largest and most elegant houses in Iceland at the time, featuring a spacious ground floor and high ceilings. In 2016 and 2017, Minjavernd meticulously rebuilt the house from the ground up. It was moved off the lot, a new foundation was poured, and then it was returned to its original location. All reusable materials, including the wooden paneling on the interior walls, were incorporated into the restoration. The house was rebuilt in accordance with the new building code and the strictest fire safety requirements. Essentially, The Old Pharmacy is a new house, and few properties in Iceland have been restored with such care.
The house contains three apartments: a large apartment on the main floor and two smaller ones on the upper floor.
Main Floor Apartment: This spacious apartment features two bedrooms. The master bedroom has a King Size bed (210x210 cm), while the second bedroom has a King Size bed (180x200 cm) that can be converted into two single beds (90x200 cm) with an ensuite bathroom. The main bathroom includes a bathtub. The sitting room next to the master bedroom has a large sofa that converts into a Queen Size bed (160x200 cm). The living room offers a cozy sitting area with a fireplace, and the kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need.
Upper Floor Apartments: The upper floor has a private entrance and includes two identical apartments, named North and South. The North apartment features a swing in the living room. Each apartment has one bedroom with a King Size bed (180x200 cm) that can be converted into two single beds (90x200 cm). The bathrooms have nice showers, and the living rooms include a comfortable sofa that converts into a Queen Size bed (160x200 cm).
All interiors are top-of-the-line, and each bathroom is stocked with organic shampoo, body soap, and hand soap from Sóley Organics.
In the basement, you will find a sauna and showers, along with a ski storage/laundry room.
Outside, there is a large hot tub (not a Jacuzzi), an outdoor shower, and a BBQ grill.
We also offer private parking on the property.
