About this property
Oceanfront Renovated 2 BR/2BA, Accessible, @ Spectacular Sand Dollar, 1BR option
2 spacious bedrooms: one king bed (new mattress) in the master bedroom, two twin beds (new mattresses) in the second bedroom, both bedrooms with lots of storage and floor space and new custom-made furniture! The two twins can be connected to form a king upon request!
2 pristine, newly renovated bathrooms, with walk-in showers, one attached to the master bedroom, the other adjacent to the guest bedroom with handrail for ease of access
NOTE: In low season (April 15-Dec 15), the condo can be rented as a one-bedroom, one bath unit at a reduced rate. (The second bedroom and bath will be locked.) Inquire with the owners about this option's availability and rate.
Newly renovated, fully-stocked kitchen, with all the appliances and cooking and eating utensils and food storage containers that you will need (including crock pot!)
New air-conditioning units in both the bedrooms
New air-conditioning unit in the living/dining room and kitchen (not necessary to use because of the constant trade winds that blow through the condo, and not recommended to use because it is better to listen to the wind and waves than to the ac unit).
New tile floors throughout the condo! Feels so good on the feet.
Large screened porch with ceiling fan
Four other ceiling fans and a movable floor fan
Free and always reliable internet connection through our own router and wifi
Cable TV with DVD player.
Maid service once a week, with mid-stay cleaning for reservations of 10 days.
Large electronic safe for laptop and cameras
Free starter supplies: paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags, dishwasher soap, kitchen sponge, hand soap
Gear-hanging and drying area on the porch for wet suits, skins, and bathing suits. You should store your heavy dive gear in the nearby dive shop locker room, adjacent to the dock. This most convenient.
Dive Friends, our on-site dive shop offering full, five star PADI services: drive-up tank exchange, boat dives, equipment rentals and repairs, rinse tanks, storage facilities, courses, and other outdoor activities. Ask about a voucher for a 10% discount on packages booked with Dive Friends!
The walls have been tastefully decorated with local art and original photographs.
Night and day on-site security.
Our personal property manager, Leanne Pinkerton, will perform pre-arrival inspections to make sure the condo is 100% clean and ready. She will either meet and greet guests upon check-in and provide them with keys, an orientation to the condo, Sand Dollar resort, and Bonaire; or guests will check themselves in by accessing a lock box containing a key to our front door. All guests will be given Leanne's contact numbers and will find a welcome letter in the condo with much useful information. She will arrange cleaning and maintenance services. If you’re interested in getting a quotation from AB Car Rental with a 10% discount, contact Leanne at BonDetails@gmail.com, telling her what kind of vehicle you desire. She will have AB Car Rental send you a quote, including the discount, which you can then accept or not.
Perhaps the best thing about our condo is the location and design of the resort. It is in the middle of the island, thus it occupies the most convenient location for diving up and down the coasts; and you can look out in wonder at the ocean from almost all rooms save the bathrooms (unless you keep the door open to the master bathroom) and the second bedroom. The ocean feels like it belongs to you, and the sky as well. And even though our condo is part of a resort, Sand Dollar is a quiet, peaceful, and private paradise. We love the choice of socializing with guests and residents or just keeping to ourselves. What a joy to be able to walk out our screened-in porch and jump into the sea at any time of the day or night for a swim, snorkel, or float. Our kids love it here, too. They like to go back and forth from the sea to the pool to the beach and to the condo (usually for food). They can disappear for hours, and we have no worries at all about them. What a joy to see them waking in the morning with plans to spend the entire day outdoors using their imaginations, hunting for sea glass, sporting with the iguanas, and playing with other kids in the resort, making life-long friends. They too appreciate the soul-expanding, upward-looking vistas.
Sometimes a herd of goats comes marauding through the grounds of Sand Dollar, and we help to usher them away before they nibble away at the work of the many owners (like us) who take pride in their gardens; and sometimes a few wild donkeys wander through, seeking their own version of paradise.
So yes, the condo has the amenities you will need to enjoy your stay comfortably and amply, but the real reason to be here is the direct and broad access it affords to the ocean, through eyes, ears, and touch. They say you ought to try not to touch the marine live, but after a while the sun and salt and breezes and the dust blown over from the Sahara will touch all your senses and you will undergo a 'sea change,' as Shakespeare calls it, into something richer and better than before. But that usually takes more than a week to happen. It happened to us when we lived here for a year. So come and stay as long as you can. And come back year after year, as some of our guests do. We will do our best to make this possible for you. We offer increasing discounts on longer stays, and we are willing to negotiate these discounts further. For our aim as owners is to cover our expenses and invest in the condo by making improvements, so that your next stay here will be even better. So tell us what you think would make this condo and the life it affords approach the dream of paradise that isn't for everyone--but is for you.
And let me not forget to mention how much we like living in our bathing suits or a pair of shorts and without shoes much of the time as we move in and out of our condo. And no wristwatch either: for there are two times on Bonaire, day and night, and two places, sea and land. Life is simple here, but elemental and close and real. It is not for addicts of the man-made, but for those who have the soul of the Psalmist.

About the host
Hosted by Eileen McFarren and Louis Petrich

Louis and I are teachers. Louis teaches the liberal arts at St. John's College in Annapolis (the quintessential great books school) and I teach Latin. We have also spent many years teaching outside the US, first with the Peace Corps in Czechoslovakia (Brno), and then Slovakia (Presov), Romania (Iasi), Kyrgyzstan (Bishkek), and Iraq (Kurdistan)! Yes, the kids went with us and attended local schools. We have settled down in Maryland, outside Annapolis. The four of us now live the typical fast-paced life of a suburban family, but every seventh year we take our sabbatical on Bonaire, where we live out the meaning of that word: rejuvenating ourselves while reveling in nature's riches. We have lived and worked in much of the world over the years, and have seen many wonderful and beautiful things, but Bonaire is the place we chose to make our second home, and Sand Dollar is that home. Our life on Bonaire at Sand Dollar offers a pretty good approximation of what philosophers call 'the good life.' We invite you to find this out for yourselves. It is real. It is not a dream. Every summer we escape to this diving paradise. Bonaire is our favorite spot in the world because of the never-failing, beautiful weather and 24/7 shore diving up and down the coasts--the freest and easiest diving in the world and possessing the greatest variety of Caribbean species according to REEF surveys. We also love being a part of a community of divers who believe in protecting and preserving the reef. We participate in clean-up dives, lionfish hunting, fish surveys with REEF, and water clarity studies. My daughter is committed to protecting all lizards, iguanas, parrots, donkeys, and goats that roam freely on the island. My son is falling in love with wind surfing, and kite boarding will come next. We hope you stay with us and fall in love with Bonaire's nature and its way of life.
Why they chose this property
Louis and I were fortunate to spend a full sabbatical year on Bonaire in 2009 (and again in 2016). We became residents, and while the children went to a local Dutch school, we dived every site on the island multiple times and made life-long friends. We had thought that a year might be too long for such a small, simple, and quiet island, but when the year ended, we knew we were in love with this unique little place. The diving really is that good, and not only the diving. We started looking at properties on our next dive trip with a very patient realtor, but in the end we bought at Sand Dollar, where we first fell in love with the Bonaire way of life. Why? Sand Dollar is in the perfect location, and it offers spacious living, not only because of the generous size of its rooms, but also because the outside is a fluid extension of the inside. Such is the genius of its design, its unique and spell-binding orientation towards the sea. The view of the sea and sky is breath-taking, and the breeze from east to west is constant. It flows right through the condo. The on-site amenities (pool, tennis, beach) and on-site dive shop (Dive Friends) sealed the deal. We made the right decision. You will think so, too, when you come here.
What makes this property unique
Drive up to your front door and walk right into your home-away-from-home in this rightly-named 'Divers Paradise.' Drop your bags and keep walking through the living and dining rooms, out the sliding glass door, to your screened-in porch that opens onto the Sand Dollar gardens. The beach and the dock are only steps away. When you aren't diving, you can relax in your comfortable, family-friendly condo, equipped with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, cable TV, an assortment of games, puzzles and books, a fully functional, newly renovated kitchen, newly renovated baths, newly furnished bedrooms, new flooring throughout, new closets, and all you need to make yourself at home. The pool and lighted tennis courts are on site and ready for you when you aren't diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, kiteboarding, hiking, kayaking, birdwatching, caving, or biking. You will be glad to tuck into the king-sized bed in the master bedroom and ready to do it all again the next day, when the birds wake you to song and the gentle waves beckon you to the blue! If you dive with Dive Friends, you can take advantage of their five locations for tank drop-offs and pick-ups and rinsing. And ask us how to arrange a guided dive on the east side of the island, where you will see eagle rays and large sea turtles and green morays and schools of large snappers and grunts in all directions!
