About this property
The Redstone House at Mendocino Stone Ranch
"The location of the house is awesome! The stone artwork in and around the house is beautiful and well thought of. Will definitely recommend this place!" - Chaitanya
Welcome to Redstone House at Mendocino Stone Ranch, a rare forest retreat tucked deep among towering coastal redwoods in Gualala, California. Set on over 30 private, walkable acres filled with handcrafted stone art, winding woodland trails, and hidden ocean views, this is far more than a place to stay—it’s a place to experience.
Redstone House feels like stepping into a forest dream where every trail, art piece, and tree has a story. Surrounding the home, pebble-lined paths wind through a canopy of redwoods, revealing stone sculptures and installations created by master stonemasons from around the world. This artistic sanctuary was shaped over decades by the vision of Peter Joseph Mullins, who started the Mendocino Stone Ranch in 2002. What began as a modest woodland property has grown into a 50-acre art-filled forest, born from Peter’s lifelong love of stone, brick, tile, and the people who create with them.
Just outside the home, the red sandstone patio serves as a natural gathering space, featuring a fire pit surrounded by artisan tile mosaics reclaimed from the Catalina Island seawall. Nearby, guests can enjoy the black granite wood-fired pizza oven, which is available for use and often becomes a favorite spot for shared meals and evenings outdoors.
From the patio, you enter into the main living area, which serves as the heart of the home. This space offers comfortable seating for conversation, relaxing, and spending time together. Large windows and doors bring in natural light and maintain a strong connection to the surrounding forest.
Adjacent to the living area is the fully equipped kitchen, designed to accommodate group cooking and longer stays. The kitchen includes a full-size refrigerator, stovetop and oven, microwave, cookware, dishware, and essential utensils—making it easy to prepare everything from full meals to simple snacks.
The dining area is located near the kitchen and provides a dedicated space for shared meals, game nights, or planning the day ahead. Its open layout keeps everyone connected across the living, dining, and kitchen spaces.
On the main level, the primary bedroom features a California king bed and offers convenient access to a full bathroom with a bathtub and shower. This setup works well for guests who prefer fewer stairs or want easy access to the main living areas.
Also on the main level is a second bedroom with a queen bed and a twin bed, offering flexible sleeping arrangements for families or mixed groups. A second full bathroom with a shower is located nearby and is shared by the main living areas and bedrooms.
Two loft bedrooms, each accessed by ladder, are located above the main living spaces. Each loft includes two twin beds and provides a cozy, cabin-style sleeping option that many guests enjoy.
At the back of the home, accessed through sliding glass doors, is a separate downstairs bedroom with a queen bed and a twin bed. This room is fully separated from the rest of the house, making it ideal for couples or guests who prefer additional privacy.
Outdoor living continues beyond the patio, with a large deck overlooking the redwood forest below. This space is perfect for morning coffee, reading, or unwinding at the end of the day while listening to the forest around you.
"Staying at the Stone Ranch Center was one of the most magical and inspiring experiences I've ever had. The land is imbued with so much care that is evident in all of the beautifully tended spaces and the extraordinary sculptures art around the property. The main house itself was so sweet and a perfect spot for my wellness retreat. " - Abbey
Located just minutes from some of the most beautiful coastal and forest attractions on the Mendocino and Sonoma coast, this property offers both peaceful seclusion and easy access to nature and small‑town amenities.
Guests are just a short drive from the ocean — Gualala Point Regional Park with its scenic bluff trails, river estuary, and sandy beach along the Pacific is approximately 5–7 minutes (about 2–3 miles) by car and offers walking paths, picnic areas, whale‑watching spots, and beach access along rugged coastline.
Roughly 5–6 minutes (about 3 miles) north you’ll find Cooks Beach, a sandy cove perfect for tidepool exploration and quiet beach walks, while Gualala Bluff Trail offers an easy stroll with panoramic views over the river estuary and ocean.
The scenic Sea Ranch area lies just a short 7–10 minute drive south and includes several coastal access beaches such as Stengel Beach, Pebble Beach, and Black Point Beach Access, each offering dramatic cliffs, tide pools, and sunset views.
Active travelers will also appreciate Gualala River Redwood Park (about 6–8 minutes by car), where you can kayak or canoe along the serene Gualala River or enjoy riverside picnics and playgrounds amid towering trees.
For a classic Northern California lighthouse experience and panoramic coastal views, the historic Point Arena Lighthouse is a ~25–30 minute drive (≈14–19 miles) north — a perfect day trip destination with trails and a museum at the top of the 115‑foot tower.
Even though the property feels tucked away, you’re close to it all but just far enough to enjoy the quiet. The surrounding area also has small galleries like Gualala Arts Center, local eateries, and the scenic road along Highway 1 — ideal for relaxed drives and discovering hidden coastal coves and viewpoints.

Other details to note:
- Most of our guests love this home for its close connection to nature. Since we’re in a beautiful coastal area with lots of wildlife, it’s normal to occasionally see an insect or two that may wander in through an open door or window. While we can’t control nature, we want to assure you that the home is treated regularly by a professional pest control company to minimize any issues.
To help keep things comfortable, please wipe up spills promptly, store food in the fridge or covered containers, and clean pet food bowls after use. Leaving food out can attract ants, so keeping things tidy helps prevent that.
- We can comfortably accommodate up to 12 overnight guests and allow up to 6 additional daytime visitors, for a total of 18 people on the property. Daytime visitors are welcome between 7 AM and 10 PM.
- Quiet hours are from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM. We appreciate your help in keeping this sanctuary peaceful and being considerate of our others.
- No smoking: This is a no-smoking home (including vaping). A deep-clean fee will apply if this rule is violated.
- Dogs under 50 lbs are welcome for an additional fee, but we’re unable to accommodate cats.
- No parties or large events allowed. This home is in a quiet residential neighborhood, and with neighbors nearby, noise carries easily. We appreciate your help in keeping the area peaceful.
- Please park cars in the garage or driveway of the home with a maximum of 4 parked vehicles per reservation. Please note that parking of RVs, Motorhomes, Boats or Trailers are not permitted within the community.
- Fire Safety: Wood-burning stove is available for use. Please follow the safety instructions in the welcome guide and never leave fires unattended.
***We work with a private security company that can be dispatched if we receive reports of excessive noise or parking violations.
***As is common with many homes and vacation rental properties, we have installed on-site devices for your security. These may include electronic door locks, light timers, security alarms, exterior motion sensors, outdoor facing cameras (which record whenever motion is detected including voices), smoke detection devices, and decibel meters (which do not record voices). For your privacy, we do not have any cameras inside the house. Cameras are all in plain sight and are located at the front entrance doorbell, and inside the garage. Tampering with the WiFi, mesh routers, or any of the security devices is grounds for immediate eviction with no refunds.
When you stay at The Redstone House, you're covered for any accidents that might happen up to $3,000. The $42 charge listed as a "management fee" on your quote covers your purchase of $3,000 of "all risk" damage protection coverage on your rental property. This protection is purchased in lieu of a security deposit. Coverage details are spelled out in the rental agreement.
