About this property

Barrio EGM | Salt-Spun Magic—Seasonal Dip or Soak

Hidden in plain sight, the EGM’s historic facade gives way to an intimate, speakeasy-inspired withdrawal. A soulful urban sanctuary in the historic Barrio Viejo, where century-old character meets refined desert luxury.

THE RITUAL OF WATER //
Curated for the season—lean into the desert rhythm, effortlessly.

SUN DRENCHED DAYS: A refreshing plunge when desert heat peaks—a cool reprieve with a scratch cocktail.

COOL DESERT NIGHTS: A coveted thermal soak—exclusively yours—when the air turns crisp.

An atmosphere of restorative stillness, where the absence of distraction invites a complete reset. Time slows for intentional family moments, solo escapes, or quiet connection with a shared bottle of mezcal and a hint of salt-spun magic.

For those with a young traveler in tow, a minimal reading nook effortlessly transforms upon request into a dedicated sleeping arrangement—allowing a defined space for a young imagination to make their own within the context of the EGM’s design intent and flow.

Whether wandering the vibrant streets of the Barrio or finding stillness within the EGM, experience a sensory shift from the everyday. A departure from the expansive scale of the suburban landscape to the intimate, thick adobe walls of this old mercantile—discover a space defined by its sensory depth and a thoughtfully revived living history.

Just steps from a celebrated culinary scene, unique storefronts, and art galleries, the dimensional allure of the barrio will reveal itself to you on foot—where the play of light on weathered adobe and the quiet hum of the historic district invite a slower, more intentional cadence.

AN EGM EDIT — THE HIGHLIGHTS

A SOULFUL INTERIOR // A speakeasy-inspired backdrop of rich patina leather and fluted wood elements. Hand-applied Tadelakt lime plaster, regionally-sourced stone and acoustic-softening textiles for a quiet, restorative reset.

A SENSORY DEPARTURE // The ultimate boutique Tucson staycation and Arizona desert escape for the discerning traveler. An intimate, private space for intentional moments and a deliberate pause from the everyday.

THE RITUAL OF WATER // Intimately scaled, ideal for lounging. A private outdoor salt-water immersion curated for the season—from a refreshing soak to a thermal winter ritual. Pure. Elemental. Restorative. Where the world fades away into the periphery.

DOWNTOWN PROXIMITY: ROTATING CULTURAL EVENTS // Steps away from Barrio Viejo’s heritage bakeries, artisan espresso, and al-fresco dining. An effortless connection to unique storefronts, art, and the downtown pulse. Ideally positioned as a refined basecamp for Tucson’s rotating cultural calendar—from the Agave Heritage Festival’s traditional plantings at Mission Garden and the distilled storytelling of Noche de Mezcal to the seasonal Saguaro Harvest—all within a five-minute radius.

THE REST // King-size bed layered with Belgian flax and weighted textiles, paired with automated darkening shades for a deep-sleep, restorative reset.

THE KITCHEN // A thoughtful extension of the Barrio’s celebrated culinary scene. High-performance induction and dual-zone wine preservation for the art of shared plates and the slow stir of a botanical cocktail. Intuitive utility designed for leisure, not labor.

CHARACTER & DETAIL

SOUL // A century-old mercantile reimagined through a lens of tactile refinement. Thick adobe walls offer a deep sense of stillness within the urban backdrop of the barrio, where historic wood floors honor the past with an unapologetically scarred patina—preserved for those who value the understated beauty of an authentic story.

There are no sterile surfaces here. The mottled interior highlights the natural undulations and organic lines of the historic structure; a moody, speakeasy-inspired space where rich patina leather and soft textiles meet minimal millwork and steel. A high-fidelity analog soundscape and dimmable amber light settle over collected found objects and curated detail—setting the backdrop for a shared bottle of mezcal, late-night conversation, or the slow morning rhythm of the barrio. A place for connection that simply aligns with the moment.

THE RITUAL OF WATER // A departure from the ordinary. Two distinct water elements designed as a sensory transition into the intentional.

Inside, a three-source thermostatic system—rain, hand, and body—set against hand-burnished tadelakt. Outside, a private courtyard for a restorative salt-water ritual in the signature Alumitub. An elemental immersion curated for the season—from a refreshing summer dip to a thermal soak under the filtered Arizona sky. Where the raw luxury of the elements meets the tactile grit of the barrio. A hint of salt-spun magic for the post-hike exhale.

THE REST // A private withdrawal. An expansive king-size bed layered in Belgian flax and weighted textiles. Automated darkening shades and dramatic wooden louvers invite a quiet separation from the pedestrian-friendly urban landscape.

THE NOOK // AN ADAPTIVE ARRANGEMENT
A considered, versatile space designed to transition with your lifestyle needs. It serves as an intimate reading or lounge nook for a quiet pause, or—for guests with a young traveler in tow—a cozy sleeping nook to call their own, layered with soft textiles and pillows. Accommodates a standard twin-size arrangement upon request. As the EGM is composed of defined sleeping volumes—intentionally designed without interior doors to prioritize an uninterrupted flow—we invite you to review our floor plan to ensure the balance of intimacy and openness meets your privacy preference.

THE KITCHEN // Intuitive prep for simple provisions. With a celebrated culinary scene just blocks away for an authentic dining experience, the space serves as a thoughtful extension of the barrio. While intentionally designed without a traditional oven, the kitchen offers a seamless edit for the art of shared plates and the slow stir of a botanical cocktail: high-performance induction, dual-zone wine preservation, and professional bar tools. Integrated utility—including a microwave, toaster, and blender—is tucked away with all the essentials to prep local provisions from 5 Points Market or your preferred grocer. It is an invitation to lean into the slow pace of the barrio.

INTUITIVE UTILITY // High-speed 229 Mbps Wi-Fi, integrated power, a dedicated architectural workspace, adaptive thermal comfort, and automated darkening shades. An ideal setting for a creative workation or remote work retreat.

A PRIVATE BARRIO COURTYARD // An intentional extension of the soulful interior, blurring the lines between the historic mercantile and the outdoor floor of swept earth, desert vegetation and mature palms. Featuring our signature Alumitub salt-water soak, the courtyard is the perfect outdoor space to bring in the early morning rhythm of the barrio or a late-afternoon under the Arizona sky.

BARRIO WALKABILITY // A landscape of brightly colored vernacular architecture made from sun-dried adobe—a place of rich history, cultural significance, and vibrant character just minutes from the cultural center of Downtown Tucson. Where beautifully preserved structures and deep-set storefronts meet the raw, weathered patina of the forgotten. Hidden courtyards reveal glimpses of barrio life, offering a place of surprising stillness and a slower cadence for the discovery of curated found objects, vintage-inspired apparel, and local art galleries.

THE BARRIO CULINARY SCENE // This celebrated landscape serves as a direct extension of the EGM—an area defined by al fresco courtyards and a thoughtful palate. The neighborhood exists in a shifting tempo; at times vibrant and filled with the energy of the street, at others, falling into a profound, sun-drenched silence. From the precision of a masterfully brewed coffee at Exo to the understated Mexican fare of El Minuto, the area offers an effortless transition from the community to a quiet evening in. Experience the agave traditions of Bar Crisol, the fire-driven heritage of BATA, the sustainable elegance of The Coronet, and the hidden-door allure of Nightjar. Organic wines and curated provisions are easily gathered from 5 Points Market for a more intimate dining experience.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE

THE LIVING LEGACY // As an iconic landmark with a storied history, the EGM remains a celebrated Barrio Viejo destination for the local creative community and curious travelers. It is not uncommon to find photographers capturing the desert light against our historic doors or to see artists setting up their easels when they find a source of inspiration. We celebrate this intersection of history, community, and art—an atypical invitation to engage with the vibrant spirit of the barrio.

A VISION IN PROGRESS // My husband and I currently live on-site as we continue to breathe new life into this historic mercantile. Our journey continues with finishing the new EGM Annex on the property as well as phased renovations to the remaining historic structure, planned thoughtfully between reservations. Future renovations will allow us to accommodate larger groups and further preserve the character of this building.

This stay was an absolute gem. The space is beautifully designed, with thoughtful, soulful interiors that immediately make you exhale. It felt so warm and relaxing that we honestly wanted to spend as much time as possible there. One night, we opted to stay in - making tea, watching a movie from bed, and fully leaning into how cozy and restorative the space felt. The bed was incredible, and we slept so well - the kind of deep, uninterrupted sleep you hope for when you’re away.Every detail was considered, from the snacks and local coffee beans to all the essentials you could possibly need. The shower was an absolute dream, and the provided robes were such a thoughtful, hotel-level touch. There’s also a sweet little reading nook in the entry that we loved spending time in - perfect for a quiet moment with a book. The location is fantastic, within walking distance of my favorite coffee shop, Exo Coffee, which also happens to be a mezcal bar in the evenings - among other restaurants/shops. The outdoor space was equally wonderful, and next time we’re already planning to spend more time outside enjoying the chiminea fire.Check-in and check-out were seamless, and the host was incredibly helpful and responsive throughout. Highly recommend - this will absolutely be our go-to stay on future trips to Tucson.

I travel a lot and stay in a ton of rentals, and this is one of the few I would go out of my way to book again. The place is in a true historic Tucson building and you can feel that character right away, but the unit itself is fully updated and really comfortable. The design is not random. Every detail feels thought through. Good furniture, good lighting, quality linens, solid kitchen setup, and everything was very clean. It feels more like a small boutique apartment than a basic rental. The photos are accurate, if anything it looks better in person. The owners are a big part of why I would send friends and family here. They are on it with communication, answer questions quickly, and you can tell they actually care about the guest experience, not just turning the place over. Helpful, kind, and professional without being in your face.Location works great for Tucson. Easy to get to restaurants, coffee and the downtown area, but still feels like its own little spot.Bottom line. If you are looking for a place in Tucson that has real character, modern comfort and owners who pay attention, this is it. I would absolutely stay here again and I am already recommending it to people.

As someone who travels nationally and internationally throughout the year, I’m very discerning about the places I stay. The Elysian stands up agains some of the highest end hotel rooms I’ve stayed in, only it’s more personal. The photos are lovely but once there, it definitely showcases a moody, elegant, and intimate tone. The space is clean, minimal, and every texture, hardware, glassware etc was clearly chosen with immaculate taste. The private patio with seating and a choline’s was great for enjoying my morning coffee or unwinding after exploring. Kara was an excellent host with so much knowledge about the area. She made wonderful recommendations for dining and shopping. She and her husband are very respectful of privacy but available if I had questions at any time. As far as amenities, the hosts did not skimp: two tvs (though I spent more time enjoying the space and historic area), record player, snacks, beautiful throw blankets, Aesop bath products, all lighting on dimmers (yes!!), Oh and the shower…AMAZING! Probably my favorite way to relax with the rain shower and spa like design of it. I’m so happy places and hosts like this exist. I will be returning to the Elysian on my next visit 100%. The award for best bnb in Tucson’s Barrio Viejo definitely belongs to this beauty!

Drawing inspiration from diverse cultures, architecture and the emotional impact of how a space can make you feel, I am dedicated to designing unique, immersive environments that redefine the "vacation rental" typology. The details matter. Clarity, trust and elevated standards matter so that we can provide a boutique accommodation experience for our guests.

The EGM is very special to my husband and I. We feel honored that we can share this space with others.

Why they chose this property

Just blocks from downtown proper, I love how you can wander the quiet streets of Barrio Viejo and just lose time. Brightly colored, vernacular architecture made from sun-dried Adobe; some beautifully preserved and some forgotten, hidden courtyards that reveal glimpses of Barrio life, vibrant murals and small intimate coffee houses and restaurants where you bump into travelers and friendly neighbors happy to share an interesting story with you about the barrio.

Evocative of a different time, this historic district just pulls you in and everything slows down while you discover the rich tapestry of colors, textures and history.

What makes this property unique

The Elysian Grove Market is a rather iconic building in Tucson. More than 100-years old, it was the neighborhood gathering place when it was a market and is very special to so many people. We have travelers and neighbors knock on our front door and we always try to welcome them in for a quick tour of the historic elements that have been preserved over the years. We love answering their questions and sharing what we can. Photographers and artists will have photo shoots outside or pop-up an easel to paint the Elysian Grove Market. It's just a magical place!
