My experience with this host was extremely disappointing. And that’s putting it kindly. Approximately 15 minutes after my scheduled 4:00 PM check-in, the host canceled my reservation without any prior notice, phone call, or message. The cancellation was processed through the app, and the stated reason was an environmental event (such as a natural disaster), even though there were no such events occurring in New York City. Two days before my arrival, the host had messaged me saying they would contact me between 3:00 PM and 3:30 PM on the day of check-in to coordinate meeting me with the key. That never happened. Around 3:30 PM, I sent a message asking for an update but received no response. Shortly before 4:00 PM, I called the host without an answer. I then contacted customer support, and they were also unable to reach the host. Almost immediately after that, the host canceled the reservation without ever communicating with me.Although I received a refund, I was left stranded at the last minute in New York City and had to scramble to find another place to stay. Because of the late cancellation, I ended up paying significantly more for a hotel, along with additional parking expenses.Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this host. Canceling a reservation after the scheduled check-in time without any communication placed me in a very stressful and costly situation. Future guests should be aware that this was how my reservation was handled.
The place we ended up staying was relatively clean but we weren't in the apartment that we paid for. We couldn't check in at 4p because there was reportedly water damage at the apartment. We were told they would call us back in an hour with a new place but we had to call them back repeatedly and finally got a hold of someone on the phone after 10pm and after paying additional money. Less space. Very poor communication. Location supposedly has to be changed and the host would not disclose the new location or any details about it until we paid the extra guest fees - which we did pay despite being over charged. We needed a place to stay and felt like we were being scammed. The host was rude in the messages and threatened to cancel our reservation without refund if we didn't pay the extra. There were 3 towels for 4 people - we paid for 5 people. We never saw anyone in person. The key was in a lockbox on a fire hydrant and the host wouldn't disclose the address until we had the keys in hand. It was all very shady and majorly anxiety provoking. In retrospect, I'm certain this is an illegal rental in NYC. Wish I knew that before we booked. We did call VRBO for back up and were told just to pay the extra....
