About this property

Sunny 4-bedroom Hummingbird Chalet with public swim access to Green Lake

Located a 2-minute walk from Green Lake's southwest shore, this house offers a lovely retreat for guests seeking comfort and space. With four bedrooms featuring a mix of four full and four twin beds for up to 12 people, there’s plenty of room for family or friends to spread out. Two bathrooms minimize wait times and the AC keeps the atmosphere refreshing throughout any hot summer day. Whether relaxing on the wrap-around deck on an afternoon with shade from a mature spruce, or gathering for an indoor or outdoor meal, guests will find the setting enjoyable and inviting.

An 8-minute walk with your own gear wagon will take you to "Sandy Beach" public access, with plenty of shallow water for kids to enjoy, and adult swim depth about 60 yards out. Three other swim accesses are even nearer, and there are a total of six public accesses in this residential area (though a couple are best accessed from the water). Sandy Beach, in particular, is a good water access for any kind of paddle sport outing to explore Wisconsin's deepest natural inland lake.

We keep a modest assortment of beach toys in a chest on the front deck. There are a glass dining table with four chairs and an awning, and a basic picnic table, on the deck.

There are many, varied attractions nearby, and others within an easy half-day or full day trip away from the lake.

The village of Green Lake is a 15 minute, 9 mile drive, where guests can peruse the downtown area with its shops, cafes and restaurants, bait shop, and ice cream stand. The Thrasher Opera House offers live music and other entertainment.

Within a 12 minute, 7-mile drive is Princeton, with its popular Saturday morning Flea Market, renowned Renard's Bakery, Horseradish sandwich shop, several gift shops and taverns with food and live music, and access to the Fox River as it flows on its winding way toward Green Bay.

It takes only about 50 minutes to reach the EAA Aviation Museum and AirVenture grounds in Oshkosh.

Some guests bring bicycles and enjoy riding a few miles on the quiet residential roads of the surrounding "Terrace" residential area. Others like the scenic "Loop the Lake" route of 23 miles, along a variety of terrain. (Our garage is not accessible to guests, but a generous eave overhang of the garage roof keeps our bikes dry in most conditions.)

Rileys Pub is a pleasant 10 minute stroll away, and features a varied menu in a friendly atmosphere. There are other restaurants and several Amish bakeries and other businesses within 10 to 20 miles.

For a broader tour of Wisconsin's environmental features and history over a half day, John Muir's boyhood is commemorated at John Muir County Park. Observatory Hill, Muir's favorite place to hike up and view the mounds and rolling hills of this Central Sand Hills Region, is about 20 miles away, with public trail access to the summit.

For another adventure, Mecan Springs is about 45 minutes away and is popular for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Downstream, the Mecan River is popular with trout anglers and kayakers.

A public boat launch is available for a small feee at Dodge County Park, only one mile to the east. Our loop driveway will accommodate most tow vehicles and a trailer, or two cars, with room for two more vehicles in front of the garage.

For wildlife appreciation, Sandhill Cranes are commonly heard bugling and calling from the nearby Roy Creek estuary and marshes around nearby Lake Puckaway. Geese, terns, cormorants, ducks migrating loons, and other wildlife frequent the area, with an occasional Osprey or Bald Eagle soaring over the lake. Deer are often visible in late evening at field edges along nearby roads, and on occasion a deer may visit the cottage. Coyotes and owls can be heard in the distance at times, at deep dusk on quiet evenings.

We look forward to hosting you at our place. There is much to enjoy!

About the host

Hummingbird Chalet is a family-owned summer retreat built by Mike and Marion Stabo, people of modest means and life-long residents of Milwaukee. It has been passed on to their six adult children who live in Milwaukee and Madison. Some of us use our time there for fishing, swimming, paddle boarding, canoeing. Others like it as a relaxing change from their urban lives.

Why they chose this property

The "Green Lake Terrace" is a long-established residential area along the southwest shore of Green Lake. Green Lake is Wisconsin's deepest natural inland lake. It supports a diverse population of game and panfish. The neighborhood features quiet roads and many mature silver maples and other trees. The area is less than 1,5 hours from downtown Madison and less than 2 hours from downtown Madison. It is a short distance from several small popular recreation-oriented towns, including Green Lake, Princeton, Montello and Wautoma

What makes this property unique

Hummingbird Chalet is right in the midst of a variety of lake-centered activities that you can make as relaxing, refreshing or energetic as guests desire. Adjacent to our property is a public easement that provides a tree-lined pathway to the lakeshore
