About this property

Backcountry Cabin: Hike & Paddle in to Paradise!

Experience unmatched backcountry remoteness with a fully equipped cabin at the end of the trail. A beautiful hike and paddle through a private trail and two isolated lakes brings you to our cozy off-grid A-frame cabin on a remote lake, surrounded by moose pasture and the soaring granite cliffs of the Canadian Shield. Reachable only by canoe, which we supply - no portaging is required. A back-country adventure to a cozy cabin!

Our cabin is located on a remote lake deep in the Mississagi Provincial Park in Northern Ontario, a very rural and rugged area of the province. The cabin is completely isolated and off-grid, and is accessible only by hiking over moderate terrain and canoeing two lakes. The trek is about 7km, roughly half of which is hiking and half is paddling. It normally takes about two hours – not including time along the way for rest stops, exploring and picnics!

No portaging is required, as two canoes are cached on each lake.

The cabin itself is a cozy and comfortable hand-built A-frame cottage with a sandy beach and wood-fired sauna. It is the only cabin on the lake and the isolated wilderness setting means there is no electricity or running water.

Water jugs filled in the lake for drinking, candles for light, a four burner gas stovetop for cooking and woodstove for warmth make this the perfect escape for those looking for back-to-basic rustic comfort - with a touch of elegance!

IMPORTANT: Guests should have a solid background in hiking, canoeing, and not be afraid to spend time alone in the outdoors. If this is your first time camping in the backcountry, this may not be the adventure for you!

Because of the remote location of the cabin, we aren`t able to get in to clean ourselves between guests, so guests will be responsible for ensuring everything is thoroughly cleaned before they leave. We will be providing extra eco-friendly cleaning supplies to facilitate this. Guests will be required to provide their own bedding, towels and dish cloths.

Our guests have full and exclusive access to the cabin and its surroundings, which includes a fold-down bed downstairs, two amazingly comfortable 6` foam mattresses upstairs. There are two outdoor campfire pits, a beautiful sand beach for swimming, two canoes with paddles (you`ll need to bring your own life jackets), a woodstove to heat the cabin if necessary, a clean outhouse with a magnificent view, a lakeside hand-built picnic table and a beautiful cedar hand-built sauna. Millions of stars are an extra bonus!

We are happy to email guests about any questions or concerns prior to their visit and we will mail them detailed map and an information package for their stay including detailed directions, maps and packing list.

This part of Northern Ontario is remote, rugged, peaceful and serene. Frobel Lake is an isolated lake miles from civilization and is located in a provincial park which was created specifically because of the old growth forests around Frobel Lake, which boasts large white pines up to 250 years old. Looncalls and moose sightings are frequent....we can`t say enough about how beautiful this place is!

Our cabin is located on a remote lake, in the Mississagi Valley, within the Algoma District of North Eastern Ontario, Canada.

The cabin is located 45 miles north of Highway 17 (the TransCanada Highway), between Sudbury (150 miles southeast) and Sault Ste. Marie (90 miles southwest). Sault Ste. Marie has an airport where you can fly to with Air Canada or Porter Airlines. It is about 3 hours from Sudbury and about 1.5 hours from Sault Ste. Marie, not including hiking/paddling time.

The access road to the hiking trail to the cabin is accessible by a short (unused) logging road just off of Highway 129.

This is a back country camping experience with the benefit of a lovely cabin at the end of the trail, so you will need to bring in all your own food - you will need to pack light as it`s a long hike in! All cooking supplies, utensils, plates etc. are provided.
We expect guests to be respectful of the natural setting and leave the cabin as they found it. Because of the remote location we aren`t able to clean in between guests so each guest is expected to leave the cabin spic and span for the next guests. Garbage will need to be trekked out as will your used linen and dish towels. Dogs are welcome!
