Barker Block was originally built in 1905 as a warehouse for the Barker Brothers Furniture Company — one of the largest furniture retailers in early Los Angeles. It stood at the heart of the Arts District for nearly a century before KOR Group, the hospitality team behind Proper Hotels, undertook its $75 million adaptive reuse conversion in 2007, with design direction from Kelly Wearstler.
The heavy timber beams, concrete walls, and warm wood ceilings are all original. The building's common spaces reflect that same care but modernized since the pandemic: the rooftop pool terrace, the outdoor kitchen, the gym with its floor-to-ceiling city views. They're worth using.
The art collection throughout the loft reflects a considered and irreverent eye — friends and guests often have a lot to say about it.
Grill a steak, a piece of fish or whatever you fancy on the rooftop BBQ and enjoy a glass of wine watching the most magical sunsets over DTLA.
Guests love morning coffee listening to birds, the neighborhood's art, food and drink scene, and having a quiet, beautiful oasis to come home to. Extra-large soaking tubs and a hot towel rack in the main bathroom also gives spa vibes
