Why they chose this property
We chose this neighborhood for its uniqueness. There is nothing like it in all of Reno.
What makes this property unique
The house was built in 1939, with Lander Street itself being developed from the 1920s to 1940s. This puts most houses on this street between 85 and 100 years old, making it very old by Reno standards. Originally, this house was 2 bedrooms with 1 bathroom.
This area is referred to as Old Southwest Reno (historic residential area), but it overlaps with Midtown Reno (the trendy, walkable corridor). It is considered as one of the most desirable parts of Reno today because of its mix of history and lifestyle.
This was one of Reno’s early “nice neighborhood expansions” which was built for middle- and upper-class residents of early Reno. It was still close to downtown but quieter and more residential. It was designed before cars dominated cities, hence the walkable layout. With Reno booming in the early 1900s due to the railroad, gambling, and divorce laws wealthier residents moved just outside the downtown area.
The houses are unique and famous locally for their architecture. They feature the Tudor Revival (steep roofs, arches, storybook look) with craftsman bungalow style (low pitched gabled roof, wide overhanging sides, exposed rafters under eaves). Homes here were custom built or semi-built, making many of them quite unique.
Many older Reno neighborhoods were redeveloped, but Old Southwest kept its historic look.
The most recent renovation of this property was in 2025 when the interior layout was dramatically updated and rearranged. You can even notice a window on the northside of the house (middle window) that goes nowhere now. A closet is actually behind it. This mix of classic Reno with modern renovations is one reason this neighborhood is so desirable.
Just a block away rests what is we have been told is the tallest tree in Reno. When the city streets were redone just a few years ago in fact, the city built the sidewalk and road slightly around the tree in the person's yard so as not to disturb or trim the "historic" tree.
