About this property

Converted Stables on Lough Derg — Harbour Pubs, Lake Walks, Near Shannon Airport

The Stables is a newly renovated retreat sitting above the Lough Derg shoreline in Garrykennedy, one of the most unspoiled corners of Ireland. Sleeps five across two bedrooms, with the lake stretching out beyond the fields and Ireland's #1 pub just a ten-minute walk from the door. Whether you're here to cycle the lake, swim at dawn, sail out of Dromineer, or simply slow down — this is the right base.

The Space:

Fully renovated in 2026, The Stables has been finished to a high standard throughout. Two bedrooms sleeping five, a well-equipped kitchen, comfortable living space, and fast wifi. Everything you need, nothing you don't. The property sits on the Lough Derg Way — Ireland's long-distance lakeside walking route — so you can step straight onto the trail from the door.

Guest Access:

Guests have full private use of the property. The garden looks out toward the lake. Garrykennedy pier is a 10-15 minute walk — a beautiful spot for an evening stroll, a swim, or just watching the boats come in nearby Garrykennedy

The Neighbourhood:

Garrykennedy is a small harbour village on the western shore of Lough Derg, Ireland's third largest lake. Larkins pub — named Ireland's #1 pub by The Times in 2026 — is a ten-minute walk. Traditional music every Sunday from 7pm, seafood chowder, and windows over the water.
Ballina and Killaloe, twin towns on the River Shannon, are 20 minutes away — great restaurants, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Nenagh, the market town of North Tipperary, is 15 minutes with a Saturday farmers market and a striking 13th century castle.
Golf nearby: Nenagh Golf Club (20 min), East Clare Golf Club (25 min, lake views), Portumna Golf Club (30 min). Adare Manor and Lahinch are within day-trip distance for serious golfers.
Cyclists: three Garmin-mapped routes from the door including the full 112km Lough Derg circumnavigation. Walkers: the Lough Derg Way runs past the gate.
Fishing: local fishing tours available - see detail on website.

Getting Around:

A car is recommended to explore the wider area. Shannon Airport is 45 minutes, Dublin Airport approximately 2 hours. The area is quiet, rural, and genuinely off the beaten track — which is exactly the point.

A Note from your Host:

We renovated The Stables because we wanted guests to experience this part of Ireland the way we do — unhurried, close to the water, with good food and good walking on the doorstep. Lough Derg is one of Ireland's best kept secrets. We hope you love it as much as we do.

About the host

Hosted by Ger and Alison Kirby

Host profile image
Ger and Ali here — your hosts at The Stables. We moved back from Dublin over twenty years ago looking for a slower pace of life on the lake, and we've never looked back. Between us we do triathlon, yoga, open water swimming, cycling and trail running — so when we say the area is made for active holidays, we mean it from experience. We know every route, every swim spot, and every hill worth climbing. We're hands-on hosts who love this corner of Ireland and enjoy sharing it with guests who appreciate the same things we do — good food, clean air, dark skies and a proper pint at the end of the day.

Why they chose this property

We chose Garrykennedy for the same reasons our guests keep coming back. It sits quietly on the western shore of Lough Derg with almost no through traffic, no light pollution, and a pace of life that feels genuinely unhurried. On a clear evening you can watch the sun dip behind the hills of Clare on the far side of the lake — one of those views that stops you mid-sentence. The wildlife here is a constant presence — foxes, rabbits, resident Irish buzzards circling the hill above the house, and cattle grazing in the fields alongside. It's the kind of place that reminds you what the countryside is actually supposed to feel like.

What makes this property unique

The Stables is a full renovation completed in 2026 — every room finished to a high standard with comfort and simplicity in mind. But what makes it genuinely different is what's outside the door. Open water swimming, Garmin-mapped cycling routes, lakeshore walking trails and some of the best pike fishing in Ireland are all within minutes. At night the stars are extraordinary — no light pollution means on a clear night you see everything. The kind of sky most people haven't seen since childhood. Add Ireland's #1 pub a ten minute walk away and Lough Derg's 130 square kilometres of lake on the doorstep — The Stables is a base for doing as much or as little as you like.
