About this property

Anna-Helena · Forest Chalet Between Ghent & Bruges

Summary:

A warm timber chalet in the heart of East Flanders' largest forest. High ceilings, natural wood throughout, a private garden with pond, and silence as standard. Walk ancient trails from the front door, explore the Gnome Trail with the kids, or simply unwind on the terrace with a glass of wine. Sleeps 5. Between Ghent and Bruges. This is what a real escape feels like.

The Space:

Chalet Ann-Helena is an authentic two-storey timber chalet where natural wood, warm light, and the surrounding forest create an immediate sense of calm.

The open-plan ground floor centres around a bright living room with large windows framing the garden. Sink into the generous leather corner sofa with a throw and a candle, or gather around the dining table for long, unhurried meals. The fully equipped kitchen has everything you need: oven, dishwasher, Nespresso machine, kettle, toaster, microwave, and more.

Upstairs, two comfortable bedrooms await. The master bedroom offers a double bed dressed in fresh linen, while the second bedroom is tailored for little ones: with a bunk bed, an additional single, and a travel cot available on request.

The bright, modern bathroom features a bathtub, shower, heated towel rail, and all essentials including shampoo, shower gel, and a hair dryer.

Outside, a spacious private terrace with garden furniture is the perfect spot for al fresco dining, while the atmospheric pond and fully enclosed garden give children the freedom to roam safely.

A first-floor balcony offers peaceful views over the surrounding greenery.

Free on-site parking for 2 cars.

Guest Access:

The entire chalet and garden are yours, exclusively. No shared spaces, no other guests, no interruptions. Just your group and your own private retreat.

The chalet has its own private entrance, so you can arrive and leave entirely at your own pace.

Every amenity is at your full disposal: the fully equipped kitchen, washing machine, terrace, balcony, and the enclosed garden with its atmospheric pond.

Families are well catered for, with a high chair, travel cot, children's toys, and board games all included. Fast Wi-Fi runs throughout the chalet making it a comfortable workspace for those who need to stay connected. Though honestly? The forest is calling

The Neighborhood:

Chalet Ann-Helena sits in the heart of the Drongengoedbos in Ursel — a charming village in the Meetjesland region of East Flanders. At 750 hectares, this is the largest contiguous forest in the province: a landscape of centuries-old tree-lined avenues, purple heathland, boardwalk paths, and quiet waterways.

Step outside and you're immediately connected to over 236 kilometres of signposted trails through the Meetjesland Forest network. The historic Drongengoed Farmstead — dating back to 1746 and now a visitor centre with a terrace, herb garden, and seasonal exhibitions — is just a short walk away. Kids will love the Gnome Trail (1.5 km of hands-on activities and wonder) and the adventure playgrounds scattered throughout the forest.

The Maldegem Heath is a hidden gem — a stunning nature reserve of heather and boardwalk paths that feels like a miniature High Fens, just minutes from your door. With a little luck, you might spot roe deer, fallow deer, or the flock of sheep led through the forest by local shepherdess Leen.

Back in Ursel village, a handful of lovely spots await: Villa Maria for a memorable meal in a beautiful historic setting, Bar Boudoir for a relaxed coffee, and Brasserie Het Jagershof right at the forest's edge. Further afield, the Castle of Poeke, the market square of Aalter, and the scenic Ghent–Bruges canal are all worth an afternoon.

Getting Around:

The chalet is best reached by car, via a quiet forest track leading directly to the property. Please drive slowly and carefully — the path is unpaved and narrow. Free parking for 2 cars is available on-site.

From the chalet, the main transport routes are easily accessible. The E40 motorway (Ghent–Bruges–Brussels) and the N44 towards Maldegem and the Belgian Coast are both within easy reach. Ghent is approximately 30 minutes by car, Bruges around 25 minutes. Aalter train station, on the Brussels–Ostend line, is about 10 kilometres away.

Once you've arrived, the car can stay parked. The walking node network begins right at your doorstep, and the Meetjesland Forest cycling network makes for wonderful exploring on two wheels.

That said, a car is recommended for groceries and day trips into the wider region.

Other Things to Note:

We believe the most beautiful stays begin with a warm welcome and end with the feeling of having been truly at home.

During your stay, we're always available via message whenever you need us but we give you all the space to fully enjoy your time together. Our goal is simple: to make sure everything is perfect, without ever getting in the way.

We love sharing our favourite walking routes, restaurant tips, and hidden corners of the Drongengoedbos. Don't hesitate to ask, we know this forest inside out.

Interaction with Guests:

Chalet Ann-Helena is a place for rest and reconnection, warmly suited to families and those seeking genuine tranquillity. Please note that the chalet is not suitable for parties or events, and pets are not permitted.

The chalet is accessed via a forest track; we recommend driving carefully on arrival, particularly in wet weather. When heading into the forest, sturdy footwear is a good idea because some paths can be muddy, especially in autumn and winter.

During breeding season (April–July), certain paths in the Drongengoedbos are temporarily closed to protect rare nesting bird species. Alternative routes are always available and well signposted.

Essential supplies are provided for your arrival. For larger grocery runs, supermarkets in Aalter centre or Knesselare are approximately 10 minutes by car.
