Grand Haven cottage description
Seeking a Lake Michigan cottage with spectacular views of the Lake and sunsets from your deck? Pair-A-Dice is the quaint cottage in Grand Haven, Michigan on the quiet, peaceful south section of Highland Park just for you and your family and friends.

Your cottage is a three-minute drive to downtown Grand Haven. Or better yet, it is a relaxing 15-minute walk along a safe boardwalk to the Grand Haven waterfront. During your walk, you will experience the beautiful vistas of Lake Michigan and the Grand River along your way.

Built in 1906, the cottage is a historic landmark in Highland Park. Pair-A-Dice retains much of its original charm as many items in the cottage are original. More than 100 cottages are tucked in the sand dunes of this area with a system of boardwalks and walkways built throughout the natural preserve. Pair-A-Dice, one of the few cottages overlooking Lake Michigan and her beach, offers its guests the beautiful sunsets on your large private deck while you drink, dine and scream for ice cream. For quick, safe, and easy access, just step on down the Highland Park Boardwalk to arrive at your beach.

Enjoy watching the Grand Haven Pier’s catwalk lite up at night looking like a string of pearls. Take a midnight stroll through Highland Park or dip in the lake below. Fall asleep with the sound of the waves and enjoy the cool fresh lake breeze. Awaken to the romantic sound of the Pier’s foghorn on the mornings the boaters and fishermen need visual assistance.

A screened-in front porch, with an attached deck, are ideal for reading, sunset watching, and experiencing the fall storms as they rumble in over Lake Michigan. Please close the windows or you will get wet. There is a small back porch for storage, for your bikes, coolers, beach bags, fishing poles and kites.

Enjoy five bedrooms, one full bath downstairs and one full bathroom upstairs. The upstairs has a deluxe new bathroom with a separate shower/bath and toilet with vanity. Also, this addition added a bedroom off the bathroom hallway. Three bedrooms have full beds, one bedroom has a set of twin beds and a fifth bedroom has sailor boys and girls bunk beds. The cottage sleeps eight adults and two children comfortably. Two bedrooms have lake views while you are resting in bed. The new addition bedroom overlooks the protected wooded sand dune nature preserve

September is the locals’ time to be swimming and fishing for Salmon in the Lake. Often the water is warmer than the air and the waves are perfect for body surfing, or watching the surfers. The beach crowds are gone however the city is still open with mostly local characters. The renowned lake getaway of Grand Haven is another must-see spot along Michigan’s Lower Peninsula on the West Coast. Visitors can choose from Grand Haven City Beach, Grand Haven State Park, or North Beach Park, which is just north of Grand Haven in Ferrysburg. For some hidden gems during peak season, you can also head to Olive Shores Park, Buchanan Beach, Rosy Mound Natural Area, or Windsnest Park. Staying in Grand Haven means you're never far from a natural sunbathing spot, a refreshing swim, a charming lighthouse, or a stunning sunset.

The view of the lake from this property was amazing. The old, cottage feel was charming and reminiscent of ages past. Our cottage was well stocked and very comfortable and very clean. I would definitely return here for future get aways. Our guest from Arizona was so impressed with the beauty and charm of staying so near to Lake Michigan. Thank you to our host, Jay!

Girls Getaway for a Fabulous 40th

Charming historic lake home with water views. Easy walk to beach, restaurant, and light house. Jay went out of his way to book a last minute dinner reservation for our group of 9. It was a wonderful time with beach walking, cycle boating, shopping, and eating and drinking. It was the first time for all of us in Grand Haven, and we really enjoyed it! Heads up: If there are mobility issues, this would not be a place for you due to the many stairs to climb to get to the house, beach, etc. Another consideration is the parking. The 2 parking spots were great but our group came from several locations, so we had 5 vehicles requiring a lot of shuffling when we wanted to get out and explore. All in all, it was a great stay and accommodated our group of 10 very well.

Para dice!! Was paradise !!!!

We enjoyed an amazing stay at Pair of Dice.. the home. Is an older classic home with beautiful wood floors, tons of windows and tons of light! The back deck overlooked the Lake and we enjoyed many sunsets and relaxation there everyday. The location was close to everything in Grand Haven and the boardwalks allow you to walk all around the area- this is a great place for bikers and hikers..and Jay was an incredible host always checking to see if we needed anything and how our stay was going. There’s a grill and fully equipped kitchen and if you’re missing anything Jay will get it for you! I can’t say enough about the rental and the only thing it took getting used to was no air conditioning. It wasn’t a big deal because the air off the lake cools the house down pretty quick, and we weren’t there most of the day time anyways . This is also a quick drive to Saugatuck, South Haven is 40-45 mins and Holland has many restaurants and entertainment too. Thanks for a wonderful vacation Jay!

Vintage charm in an amazing location!

This place is a quintessential beach house, filled with historic character. The location is perfect with a boardwalk that ends right on the beach. The house is located on the bluff directly above the beach with incredible views. It is also a quick drive to downtown Grand Haven. A few things to consider: * Four bedrooms have partial height walls, sharing a common ceiling and common overhead light - bring sound machines to help with the noise transfer between rooms! * While the listing accommodates a fair number of people, each room is very tiny. Dining table and living room each accommodate only 6 at a time. Deck is slightly larger but still a bit tight. * Kitchen is very small with limited counter space. Oven temp was inconsistent which made cooking a bit challenging. * The grill on the deck was not working. Jay made an attempt to fix it during our stay but unfortunately it still didn’t work. Overall, Jay was a very attentive host and we loved our stay!

Covid escape!

Fantastic house to escape and rebalance your world. We were 2 families of 4 each with 2 teenage kids. The house was easy to find, clean and ready on our arrival and Jay was at hand to show us around. It’s a very traditional beach cottage with a vintage feel retaining many original features which add to its charm. Our week turned out to be on the cooler side for August so lack of A/c was not an issue. There are plenty of fans and breezes to keep you cool. The small issues we had were dealt with very promptly by Jay, which was fantastic. We enjoyed the fabulous deck with amazing lake sunset views. The kitchen is small but very functional and there is plenty of storage room in the back porch. The bedrooms are small ( as you’d expect in an old cottage) but adequate. 4 of the rooms have an open ceiling set up with dividing walls only. This wasn’t an issue for us but just a little quirky. The closeness to the beach was great for our teenagers who could come and go on their own. There are also many fun activities nearby. We went to Holland for crazy golf and go-carting, and Muskegon for river tubing. My son enjoyed the skate park at the YMCA very much. Grand Haven is a lovely town, just a mile walk from the house along the picturesque water front. We enjoyed several meals out and felt very safe as there was plenty of mask wearing, social distancing and very organized restaurants. We had a wonderful time. Thanks Jay 😊

spectacular view

We LOVED our stay at Pair-A-Dice! Great location and amazing views. The cottage itself was super cute. We really enjoyed all the "things from the past" throughout the cottage. This home has such history and it was fun to learn about it. The bedrooms were all comfortable and it was amazing to fall asleep and wake up to the sound of the water! The kitchen and bathrooms had basically everything we needed. Bob, the property manager, was amazing and answered all my questions right away. He greeted us at the cottage and made us feel right at home. He worked with us on extending our stay and adding extra parking spaces due to needing them. He was fantastic to work with. The neighborhood was very welcoming and friendly. We felt completely safe and part of their community. We didn't mind all the stairs (stairs to the cottage and to/from beach area), but it is something to take into consideration when booking. They do have a chair lift on the stairs and you could easily drive down to the beach. if needed. It is what I would expect from a cottage sitting up on the bluff, but still worth reminding others. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because I felt it could have been a bit cleaner. Don't get me wrong, the bathrooms were totally clean and, as a whole, it had a clean feeling. My issue was more the floors upstairs were clearly not mopped and very dirty if wiped. It appeared that it could have used a good wipe down of the baseboards, stairs and inside the kitchen cabinets/drawers. The kitchen sink also did not appear to be as clean as it should be. At first we thought it was just bc it was old, but a quick scrub with Comet told us it just wasn't cleaned properly. I was actually surprised bc so many prior reviews stated how clean it really was. With that being said, I would stay here again in a heartbeat because overall it was fantastic. We never felt as though the cottage was "dirty" or anything, it could just use a bit more TLC.

Wonderful view

All aspects of this property met our expectations except for the bedroom situation. The property is listed as 5 bedrooms, but only one bedroom (new addition) has full walls. The other 4 bedrooms have open rafter ceiling which makes each room connected as far as noise is concerned. If you are traveling with other couples, this may not be advantageous. That being said, the location is great and the view from the deck is lovely. Jay is also a very gracious host.

Family traditions are strong here as the cottages are passed down to future generations, with little turnover to new owners. My dream came true when I had the opportunity to buy Pairadice on the ridge overlooking Lake Michigan and the beach, in 2013. I love sharing Grand Haven with friends and now with your family. This is truly the most beautiful place in the world, (in the summer and fall). Come make your own family traditions and memories here.

Why they chose this property

Please do not rent a Cottage in Grand Haven that does not include a front row seat to the most beautiful late afternoon sunsets. Did you know in the Summer the sunset can last for over an hour starting at 9:30 at night? Every sunset is different and you will say each night, "That was the best sunset that I ever saw!"
Most of the rental cottages require a short walk to the beach or gathering point to see a sunset. You have the option to view from your Pairadice deck or inside glass porch. Priceless!!

If you seek to experience a peaceful, relaxing, mother nature vacation, this is your spot. Overlooking the beach during the day and watching sunsets that rivals the sunsets of the Pacific Islands. Your choice to walk, saunter, bike, roller blade, skate board, run with little need or desire to drive your car. If your too tired or sunburned to walk into town, walk down the steps, cross the street and there you will find a beach restaurant and bar, Notos.

Enjoy the miles of board walks that traverse highland park 110 cottages. Find the owls nesting at night the baby dears playing in the woods and the song of the tap tap tap from the red headed wood peckers. Your children have their own private park to plany hide and seek, capture the flag and geo scavenger hunts.

This is a vacation for living in the now, a time to be visiting life as it should be lived.

What makes this property unique

Experience what it is like to live like a local in this exciting friendly, safe summer tourist town without being in town. You will quickly feel at home here at Highland Park overlooking Lake Michigan Water. One of the few highland park cottages on the bluff with a view of the lake and a deck to watch nightly sunsets. Their are boardwalks and stairs leading down to the private secluded sandy beach, fresh lake, no salt or sharks here, however there are waves for body surfing and paddle boarding.
Pairadice was built in 1904 and continues to have the cottage feel with modern updates. On demand water heater, washer and dryer, and new bedroom and bathroom with separate vanity addition. My focus is to keep the cottage charm and simple slow pace life style to ensure your family will want to come back every summer to Grand Heaven.
