Great location, great hostess
This was our first time to Costa RIca but will not be our last! We are a family of 5 and never felt like we were on top of each other in this home. There was lots of room inside, but because of the location and grounds, we spent all of our time outside enjoying the back deck, pool or patio sets.
The pool is not big, but perfect to cool down each night after spending the day in the hot hot sun.
We can not say enough about what a terrific hostess Patri was. We had a minor medical emergency and it so happened that Patri was stopping by. She took care of us, spending half the day with us in a local Pharmacia (where a doctor was). Thanks again!
The grounds keeper Jarrah (think I spelt it correctly) was quite a character. Very expressive as his English is not very good (to go along with my poor Spanish) but never had an issue communicating with him.
There are several very friendly dogs that greeted us each morning and accompanied us on our many walks along the beach.
The location was great, close to everything and only 1hour from the San Jose airport.
Loved waking up each morning to the sounds of the many beautiful parrots who ate from the trees on or near the property.
If you are looking for a quiet, comfortable, safe place to stay in Costa Rica with many close attractions, this is the place for you. Would not hesitate to go back again.
Awesome beach bungalow
If you like waking up to the sound of the waves hitting the shore; if you like waking up to the sound of parrots this is the place for you!
This was our first time traveling to Costa RIca and we are a family of 5, including 3 children, 15, 18 and 21. So we need the room and did not have any issues spending 5 days in Patri's place.
There are 3 bedrooms that are comfortable and the AC in each room was appreciated.
The kitchen was well appointed and had everything we needed.
The property itself was amazing, right on the beach! We spent most of our time sitting on one of the 4 patio sets in the yard.
The pool, which is small (not a bad thing though), but perfect to cool off in as we did every night after spending the day in the hot, hot sun.
We really enjoyed waking up to the beautiful scarlet macaws feeding in the trees just each morning!
The caretaker, Jarrah is a special man. He spoke little English but we enjoyed his visits each day. When you meet him you will know what I mean.
Patri was an amazing host! We had a minor medical issue our first day and when Patri heard, she took us right to the pharmacy (every pharmacy in Costa Rica has a doctor, who knew!) and spent every minute with us, even though she had never met us! Thank you Patri!!!
There are several friendly dogs that visited the house each morning. They made our daughters day. They do not beg and just like being with you. We took walks along the beach and always had a few dogs walking with us as if making sure we were safe (not there was any safety issues).
I have heard nothing but good things about other people's experiences and they are not wrong! The country and people are amazing.
The only negative thing (and not a big deal once you find it) was finding the road going down to the property. We did arrive late at night which I am sure contributed to finding the unpaved road (as many are). But like I said, once you find it (it is just before the bridge and hard to see since there are no markings).
Driving around was excellent, main roads (not many of them) are well maintained. I was expecting much worse as people say they are not well marked. Since there are only a few main highways, it makes getting around quite easy, since most towns are right off of them.
The grocery stores are extremely clean as are the gas stations (may seem weird to mention gas stations, but in Costa Rica they are extremely clean!!...at least the ones in the country side, which was not expected in the least)
We had a wonderful stay. The property is as advertised. The location is wonderful. You are literally steps away from the beach. The pool is a bonus. We really enjoyed talking with the property manager and caretakers. They were readily available. There are some good restaurants within a short driving distance or you can prepare a meal.
This is Costa Rica
If you are looking for an authentic experience during your time in Costa Rica this is the place for you. The house is situated in a cozy neighborhood and there are neighbors on both sides as well as other vacationers coming in and out. It will be noisy at times. The locals are so kind and helpful. Most do not speak English but Patri is an amazing resource. The caretaker Jarra knows a little bit of English and we were able to communicate well enough with our limited Spanish. We had a car which was convenient but we also took advantage of Patri’s driver Gilberth. He speaks excellent English and helped out so much! He will take you almost anywhere! He also helped. We chose the place because of the access to the water. It was amazing! We swam almost everyday in our 8 days here. Our two teenage daughters also enjoyed the plunge pool. We woke up to scarlet macaws and the sounds of the ocean waves lapping up to the shore. At night, the Sound of the waves and the humming of the AC helped to drown out any music coming from next-door. If we return to Costa Rica we will be in touch with Patri and her crew!
Hola Angie, Jeff, Hazel and Piper! Thank you so much for the wonderful review. We so enjoyed your family and it is always so gratifying to to have guests who appreciate our authentic Costa Rican location. We hope that we will have the pleasure of your return one day as you certainly do have friends in Costa Rica! Hugs, Patri
I could not have been more disappointed.
Our stay was very unpleasant and very disappointing. I was very concerned about the safety of my family and we abandoned the property mid-vacation and moved to another location.
Some of the issues we confronted at Casa Amarilla included the following:
- Holes in screens. We had to stick a finger in a hole to open the front screen door. My wife actually injured here finger pulling the spring latch. Also sharp broken screen edges cut my finger. The many holes in the screen also contributed to the very large number of insects in the house.
- The ceiling fan stuck on "high" in bedroom making it very difficult to sleep. We had to call property manager to fix.
-No lamps in the bedroom or the living room. Natural and artificial light in the house was very poor.
-Towels may have been clean but they looked soiled.
- After we arrived, we were advised that the gas stove pilots were mixed up and did not work properly. The control knobs did not turn on the correct stove tops. We were concerned about our safety regarding the gas.
- There was peeling paint and cracked walls in the bedrooms.
- Our bedroom flooded from the ceiling during a rainstorm. We were told by the property manager that it was a leaking pipe, but it only flooded when it rained.
-The washing machine did not work.
-The refrigerator continuously froze our food even after we adjusted the setting way down.
- The road down to the property was unpaved, extremely steep, rocky and we should have been advised of this condition in advance. My car suffered a flat tire during our trip that I believe partly attributable to the unpaved road.
I would not recommend this property to anyone.
