Excellent place to stay near all that the capital has to offer. Very easy to walk to most places. We walked back after the July 4th fireworks from the wharf with the kids who are 11 and 12. It’s only a 15 minute walk to the union station as well as 10 to the capital building area. Uber was helpful and easy to get in this area as well. Highly recommend this property.

Close to Everything

Great place to stay! Neighborhood felt safe. Able to park our car their the entire stay and then walk 20-30 minutes to Museums. The Union Pub was only a 9 minute walk and had delicious food! The place itself was clean, plenty of bedding, towels, full kitchen, laundry. They even had a little fan in the bedroom, which I appreciated. I will definitely stay here again in the future.

Lovely

It was a nice apartment and well furnished. I loved the touches of modern and antique. Nice walking distance to a few sites with beautiful brownstones along the way. The cement stairs down to the door were a bit steep, however.

Beautiful, safe and quiet

This property is really nice and in a great location. The bed is super comfy and pillows are so good we looked for the name so we can purchase them for home. Lots of hot water, lots of great towels and really nice people. We will definitely reserve this place again for our next DC trip.

Great place despite the ants

We had a great experience staying here, the location is ideal, the rooms were comfortable. The only complaint was the ants in the kitchen.

Close enough to walk

The house was exactly what we needed for our short trip to DC. It had the perfect amount of space for our family of 4 and a parking spot for our rental car! The house was clean and comfortable, and it didn’t feel like a garden unit. The neighborhood was quiet and quaint. The library of congress was only about 10-15 min walk and a 25-30 min walk to the National Archives. Overall, we were very happy with our stay and would recommend this place for families.

Great location in historic older home

Walking distance to the capital ... beautiful older home in a nicr neighborhood. Instructions and the space was excellent. It needs spme light repairs, but everything was functional, comfortable, and spacias for a basement apartment. Only one entrance / exit with the agress having bars. But great price for the area, for sure.

Great location, very convenient

Love the location of the property, and the off street parking cannot be beat! It is within walking distance of everything you want to see. Our family of 4 was very comfortable, and the property was well stocked with everything we needed. There are a few parts of the property that could use some repair or maintenance, but otherwise, it was a great stay! We would definitely stay here again!

Nice spot

Location is awesome. Sketchy steps to get down there so be careful but the apartment was just as described. Really comfy bed and pillows. Some things were a little run down and I couldn’t get the TV to work, otherwise I would’ve ranked this higher. Place is appropriately priced for the area.

This was our second time staying in this comfortable apartment on Capital Hill.

We enjoy being so close to the Capitol and two Metro stations (within 7-8 blocks). Very clean and well stocked kitchen. Washer and dryer are very helpful, too!

Enjoyed the stay

Info/pictures were accurate. Spacious. Had everything we needed. Loved having the parking space and a secure area for our bikes. Location close to the Capitol was great, but was uphill from the Mall so can be a tough bike ride at the end of the day! Came with our 12 & 14 yo, and each getting their own single bed/mattress was great.

Visit to DC

Felt a little mixed about the property. Location was great!. It was a little confusing to find and get into the property. The accommodations were great for a couple & small children. However, the daybed in the living space was extremely uncomfortable and the mattress needs to be much thicker and upgraded or replaced with a good sofa bed. This would allow comfort in the living space. The bathroom and kitchen were good!

Great location

Parked the car, and didn't need it the whole week. Just a few blocks away is union station where you can get the metro, or buses to get you where you need to go. It was a little lacking in supplies. Couldn't find dishwasher soap,(which they brought us) or trashbags that we didn't realize until we took out the trash when we left. The dishwasher didn't work, but not their fault, appliances break down. The pictures show 2 chairs in the living room, but there was only 1 :( We really enjoyed our stay. The owners are very nice, and informative. The steps down to the apartment are not going to be for everyone though. They are very narrow, and steep. Overall very clean, comfortable, and an easy walk to the national mall.

Great neighborhood, great location, great apartment

This apartment was exactly what the two of us were hoping it would be. The neighborhood has a lot of charm, the location is walking distance from restaurants, shops, the Capitol and Union Station and far beyond if one is inclined to walk as much as we do. D.C.'s Metro is easy to navigate and the taxi rides (when we pooped out because of the heat) were reasonable. We cooked very little, but the kitchen was very well equipped. The only thing I could have asked for was a really sharp knife. Having a washer/dryer was great for us as we'd been traveling a week before arriving. And, thank heavens for the air conditioner. It was in the high 80s every day we were there, but inside was cool and comfortable. Hilary gave us the best advice on where to eat out! We tried four of the restaurants she recommended and each one was fabulous. If we'd stayed longer, we would have tried them all! And, there was lots of literature in the apartment about things to do in and around D.C. Other reviewers commented on the four stairs leading down to the apartment, and I must say, they are steep. However, we're in really good shape in spite of being "seniors" so they weren't a problem for us. Someone also mentioned that the bathroom door sticks, and it does, but I didn't fear getting stuck inside. All in all this is a great apartment. We would definitely stay here again.

My family of five (2 adults and 3 kids under 12) enjoyed our stay here. The location was excellent to be able to walk or take the metro. The apartment was clean and had what we needed, but please be aware that this is an apartment in an old home. There are some things that are worn out or quirky, but we felt safe and the space was clean, quiet, and family friendly. The host responded to questions/requests, and the free parking was right there by the apartment entrance.

About the host

Hosted by Katy Kelly

Host profile image
The Kelly family is the second family to live in the main house, which was built in 1876 by Maj. Samuel Walker for his family.

Why they chose this property

One of the premier properties on Capitol Hill, the carriage house, the stable and the east side of this Victorian house were completed in 1876. By 1886, Maj. Samuel Walker had more money and ten children so he added the west side of the house, the third floor and the porches in the style of Charles Eastlake, the English architect who simplified Victorian architecture and flattened its rounded gingerbread. All of the first floor ceilings—except the hall—are tin and so is a bedroom ceiling on the second floor.

What makes this property unique

One of the great pleasures of the house is that it remains much as it was when first built. Modernizing was done slowly, with care and caution. On the chance that electricity was just a fad, Major Walker only electrified every other arm of the chandeliers in the living room and the study and left the others as gas lights. The gaslights still work--and so does the electricity.
