Traditional Fisherman's Cottage directly on the sea wall.
This superb holiday cottage in the conservation Seatown area of Gardenstown was originally a fisherman's cottage, built in the 19th century and is directly on the Moray Firth - a few metres from the sea and is ideal for a family of four, or a couple looking for an away from it all break. It is not ideally suited for two couples as it has only a single bathroom. Lie in bed listening to the sound of the waves lapping at the sea wall directly below you. The property was modernised a few years ago and features; a lounge with three sea view windows; large eating kitchen; bathroom with bath and shower over and upstairs one double bedroom and a twin bedroom. Features include a wood burning stove; strong signal Wi-Fi; wall mounted smart television, (normally with Netflix available;) bose bluetooth music unit; Nespresso coffee machine; full kitchen with dining table; quality cotton bedding and of course those stunning sea views. Look out for the school of dolphins in the Moray Firth, which if you are fortunate could be viewed from inside the cottage. The kitchen has a dining table for four; washing machine; fridge/freezer; oven and hob etc. Heating is by electric wall heaters and partial underfloor heating. Situated at the bottom of sandstone cliffs, Gardenstown was founded in 1744 and the harbour now caters for small fishing vessels and pleasure boats. The small winding streets, picturesque harbour and old stone fisherman's cottages seem untouched by time and the spectacular views, headland and bays round the village make a haven for artists, photographers and bird watchers, while the sandy beaches and rocky coves and pools make it a location for all ages. Bookings are weekly on a Saturday to Saturday basis with minimum four night stays within a Saturday to Saturday basis in off season - contact us for availability with your dates. Electric is paid extra, monitored by the guests on a trust basis. Pets possible on request..

Beautifully appointed cottage overlooking the sea. Scary step out of bedroom onto steep stair. Very narrow road to property. However lovely spot to enjoy peace and quiet. Underfloor heating in bathroom a real treat. The welcome pack was extra special and unexpected. Thank you

Hi Moira,
The "scary" step out of the main bedroom reminds us that this is a genuine historic "Fisherman's Cottage" in a conservation area, as no planner would allow it nowadays in a new building.
There is a fine line when modernising a property yet still aiming to retain some of its history and character, and the "quirky" step is one of the original features and a reminder of the cottage's history.
"Lovely spot to enjoy peace and quiet" sums up the unique location.
Thank you for your feedback and delighted you enjoyed your stay.
Kind Regards
Brian

Wonderful location but overpriced property with problems
Adequate accommodation but windows that were so heavy that two fairly strong women could not open....the owner came out to open them and he had to prop them open with logs! Lock on front door failed so he sent out a joiner to repair. Oven set off fire alarm constantly when we tried to cook a jacket potato! Gave up cooking as it was too stressful! Felt as though we encountered a lot of maintenance tasks to the house which was not what we had planned

Thank you for the feedback on our cottage and I am glad you enjoyed the location.
We have been leasing Gannet Cottage for holiday lets for around 13 years now, continually updating it each year. The window frames are locally made wooden “sash and case” and it is a fine line keeping the character of the traditional fisherman’s cottage, which is in a conservation area, against totally modernising it with say aluminium windows – assuming planning allowed it.
In our only phone conversation you were very enthusiastic about the cottage and the views, and were asking about the names of the various wading birds you had seen from the cottage windows. You mentioned your inability to open the windows, and I said that they do need a firm pull. I offered to come up the next morning, (approx. two hour round drive) and open them for you, but did point out that we had never had this request in all the years we had rented out the cottage. You said you would be out all of the next day, but insisted you wanted me to come and open all of the windows.
Early the next morning I visited the cottage and opened the windows and also arranged for a joiner call out as the front door lock (new in 2018) had developed a fault.
You emailed me when you returned to the cottage at 18.07 that same evening, thanking me for arranging the lock fix and saying it was lovely to have the windows open.
At 20.52 that evening I received an email from you asking for the downstairs windows to be closed…….
By law (and for safety) we are required to have smoke alarms fitted and I apologise if on this occasion they turned out to be too “sensitive”.
Overall, I am obviously very disappointed you had “maintenance tasks” during your stay and trust this did not prevent you having a lovely week’s holiday.
The property was as described, 3 metres from the sea with views across the bay from the three lounge windows. A lovely location, a sandy beach to one side and the harbour to the other with a short walk round the bay to Crovie. We only ventured out of Gardenstown once, to Macduff, as we were more than happy to stay in the village walking on the sand, round the bay or just sitting at the arbour. We did go up to the ruins of St Johns church, an energetic climb up the valley, but wonderful views from the top. There is a "Wee Shoppie" on Main Street which is well stocked with everything we needed, the Garden Arms Hotel provided meals on three of our nights there and the fresh haddock was excellent. Our daily walk on returning home was just not the same !
The house is right on the sea wall so brilliantly located. The views of the sea are uninterrupted. The house is well equipped and the owner left helpful instructions.
What a fantastic week we have had a Gannet cottage. Looking out of the windows looking at all the different wildlife from different types of birdlife to seals bobbing up to say hello.
The property was well equipped with everything we needed and very comfortable after a day of exploring the local area.
Definitely we will return.
We had a great stay in Gardenstown. The cottage was clean and in order and we made ourselves at home. It has fabulous views across the Moray Firth. We found it was easy to spend time in the cottage and beach and we did not necessarily need to go too far to have a nice and relaxing time. This is important for us as one of daughters is disabled and we can't go too far from where we are staying easily. However the location is very beautiful and it was lovely looking out to sea every night. I would advise bringing sleep masks though! The bedrooms are light.... ;)
I loved the stay at Garden town .
Such a lovely little cottage clean well decorated .
The views and the walks were spectacular .
The stairs to the bedrooms were steep but manageable.
The twin beds were ok but could use an extra pad to be more comfortable.
We loved the neighbourhood had fun talking to various people native to the town .
Was well worth the trip.
Thank you Brian

Cosy, comfortable and a fabulous location.
The cottage has obviously been extensively modernised from what must have been a pretty basic fisherman's cottage. It is very small, but ideal for a couple, and has everything needed for a comfortable stay. It is spotlessly clean and well maintained, and the location is fantastic, with wonderful views: especially at sunset. Gardenstown itself is lovely, but with few amenities. However the wonderfully kind, friendly and generous local people more than make up for that. We will definitely consider returning.

Why they chose this property
My Mum was born and brought up in Gardenstown and so when choosing a location to invest in a holiday property, this was high on the list. Revisiting the village in the early 2000's reminded us how scenic and unique it was. An ideal "traditional fisherman's cottage" directly on the seafront came on the market and we purchased the property in 2005.
What makes this property unique
While some other properties claim of being "near the sea" we are directly on the sea shore in a conservation area with a sandy bay of natural beauty.
