About Ralph Gutschmidt
My wife and I and our 4 children moved to this property on Orcas Island from Seattle 20 years ago. After we finished our house we constructed the cabins. We love living here with our sheep and llama and the close island community. It is a great place to live and visit.
Why Ralph Gutschmidt chose Eastsound
Orcas Island was chosen to build our dream home and to raise our family. We visited the San Juan Islands years before and fell in love with the peaceful Island living.
What makes this Cottage unique
We live in nature. We are removed from the big city and can listen to the frogs and loons at night. Our resident bald eagle pair are fascinating to keep track of each year. They work on their nest starting in February and lay their eggs in March or April. Our farm animals are a lot of fun and it brings us great joy raising Cotswold rare breed sheep.

Perfect for our group of 7
This property was great for our group of 7 (4 adults and 3 kids). It was an easy drive to the East Sound and Moran State Park where we spent most of our time. We enjoyed taking walks in the neighborhood and visiting the animals. Thanks for sharing your place with us!
Great property and host. Beautiful wooded area with privacy.
We stayed a week at the gate house. Had our son and his wife up for a few days and then my sister and her husband from Oregon also came up. Perfect location....just a few minutes from town by car. Right on the way to town from the ferry. Fully supplied kitchen, two private bedrooms plus extra beds in the loft and master. Good sized dining room table.Great firepit and outdoor entertainment areas also. Very quiet. Clean with lots of natural light. Sheep were a kick...very talkative..Great stay!
Comfortable, quiet but yet conveinient
We stayed in the Gatehouse and really enjoyed our accommodations. The house had a lot of room for three adults, was quiet but yet centrally located on the island. We used the outside dining area almost every day and enjoyed morning walks in the area before heading out to other parts of the island. The only two things that would have made it better was to have a place to hang clothes in the master bedroom ( a rod with hangers would have been good) and owners should replace the skillets. The non stick coating was damaged on the existing ones and we purchased one in Eastbound (at a premium cost) and took it with us. Overall, it was a great place to stay and would recommend it to others.
Excellent view of the east sound and adorable, well appointed "cabin".
Absolutely adorable cabins, we stayed in the 'trout house' and it was so nice! Our 7 year old daughter loved all the yard area to play hide and seek as well as her ball. We had deer close by for her to view, as well as the osprey nest to watch the osprey fishing in the sound. Bald eagles were close by as well. The cabins are approx. 5 min. from the 'downtown' Orcas Village so close but yet a nice getaway from the downtown area. The owner is most helpful and pleasant at check in. Just can't say enough great things about it. Was perfect for our trip for sure. We will definately recommend these cabins to others when traveling up to Orcas. And we will stay again when we go up.
