The 500 to 1000 years old Barnay castle is really an ancient bijoux. Located in the middle of the Brionais countryside with cows and goats around, it is very nicely kept. The flat with spacious rooms and kitchen offers a family including kids or a small group everything one could need to have a great relaxing time in a truly historic atmosphere. The owners are extremely kind and helpful. indeed, the only sad thing is one has to leave again. Ideal for a relaxing week of holiday In the countryside or at least a long weekend with lots to see and enjoy in the region.
This property is breathtaking both inside and out. The hostess was super helpful with providing my friends and I with a list of the best things to do in the area. I was looking for a fairytale-esk castle to stay in and this chateau delivered! From the spiral staircase in a tower to the bedrooms with furniture appropriate for a castle of that time. All my dreams came true here and my friends were able to celebrate their engagement in a castle, how much more perfect could that be? If the hostess will have me again, I would love to come back!
What fantastic accommodation, having an opportunity to stay in a real castle. Monsieur Hubert (I think the host's uncle) greeted us when we arrived. He doesn't speak a word of English & we only speak a very little French but we had a great time with him explaining (with lots of hand gestures) about the castle which he is obviously very proud about. The rooms are large and very comfortable with all the fittings you would require. The views from the castle are amazing and very peaceful. Hubert showed us his vintage truck & gave us all a ride round the lanes in it. If you are in that area a stay there is a definite must.
The Chateau Barnay is everything you imagined it would be, and more! Yes, it really is a castle, lording over the valley below. But it is also a beloved family home of many generations, and the love and attention shows in the way it is meticulously kept. We were overjoyed and honored to stay there.
While we stayed there, we did very little but cook, eat, relax, and stargaze (best views of the Milky Way we've seen in years!). We did take a day-trip to the wineries of Southern Burgundy (Pouilly-Fuisse), and to the Saturday market in Charlieu. But mostly we listened to the rhythm of the valley animals, enjoyed the beautiful garden, played Petanque and got away for awhile.
We got to meet the uncle of the owner, Tonton Hubert, who is 80 years old, was born in the chateau, and doesn't speak any English. That didn't prevent us from enjoying hanging out with him. He's a sweet guy who clearly loves and watches over the chateau.
Staying here was an unexpected treat - the home wears its history well, and we hope it will be hosting guests or a loving family for many years to come.

Not as described!!!
It's not a chateau, but only one apartment on the first floor. Very disappointing. We left early.
We would expect to be reimbursed, but vrbo took no responsibility and neither did the owners.
