Located south of Mont Ventoux, Pernes les Fontaines, where its Nesque river bathes the ramparts of the Middle Ages, is the city of fountains .... 40 old fountains, carved, colossal or discreet ...
Along the alleys of this ancient city, are:
- beautiful 17th and 18th century mansions,
- the Notre Dame gate remains of the ramparts gates,
- the keep of the former castle of the Counts of Toulouse,
- the covered hall from the 17th century.
- the Tour Ferrande dating from the 13th century where you can contemplate superb frescoes from the same period,
- its church, Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth, of Romanesque origin and its chapels, church of the Augustins,
- the Clock Tower, fortified building with its wrought iron cage ....
- the pretty Comtadin Costume museum with lace, petticoats and other old linen, as well as the bicycle museum (this is where the derailleur was invented for shifting gears on all bikes).
Very beautiful walks, mountain biking or horse riding will also make you discover its countryside and its scrubland.
Around Pernes les fontaines, you will find:
- Saint-Didier, lively town where water gushes from fountains in the shade of plane trees,
- the inevitable Venasque, high perched and classified among the most beautiful villages of France,
- La Roque sur Pernes perched on a rock which offers many views of the sumptuous Monts de Vaucluse,
- Saumane, where you can approach a group of superb bories typical of the region (kinds of small round dry stone huts which were once used by shepherds).
- Isle sur la Sorgue, with its shared waters, its wheels, canals and renowned for its antique shops,
- Fountain of Vaucluse where the Sorgue arises which arises from the abyss located at the foot of an immense cliff; it's one of the biggest resurgences in Europe,
- and of course on the banks of the Rhône, the unavoidable Avignon, nicknamed the "city of the popes",
without forgetting the Roman cities like Vaison la Romaine, Orange, Nîmes.
Beautiful walks guaranteed ...
