About this property

City Cottage on Main St in North Georgia

Constructed in 1929, this home maintains all of its beautiful architectural elements of the original build. Ten foot ceilings, beautiful plaster details, transom windows, walnut and French doors. Endless interesting elements that are largely unknown in modern buildings.

Plenty of room to get lost in this old home occupied by the city elder, Justice of the Peace, Mr. Campbell’s family for 74 years. History abounds, and many people have been married here in front of the fireplace.

Guests love the sunroom that serves as a library and additional sleeping space with a fold out sleeper sofa. The huge living and dining room open into one another to gather with friends and family.

Guest bedrooms feature high quality beds with 100% cotton sheets and ample pillows and blankets. The master bedroom features a king sized premium Serta Black mattress that is luxurious! The master has an en suite bathroom that is in need of a refresh, but is clean and well equipped.

The furnishings throughout are unique and quality to enhance the experience.

There is a breakfast room for a quiet morning coffee or meal to seat four people.
The kitchen features a huge farmhouse sink original to the house. The cabinets and layout of the kitchen are original too. Every utensil is available for your cooking adventures. The huge walk-in pantry includes spices and staples for your use. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking and serving. Calphalon cookware is available so no sacrifices are made.
A large dining room seats 8 people.

Guests also love the massive covered patio that overlooks the backyard. A ceiling fan helps keep the air moving on hot days. You will enjoy the abundance of plants and flowers to be found on the patio. There is also a gas grill and a two burner cooker (please make arrangements in advance so I can have this available). I also have massive cook pots if you want to do a seafood boil. I have added a tv with an antenna so you can watch local football. There is also a DVD player if you want to rent a movie or keep the kids entertained.
For chilly nights, I have added a heater to eliminate the chill so you can hang out on the patio under the colorful lights.
Guests love sitting in the swing and watching the wildlife and enjoying the big backyard.
You are also walking distance to downtown. You can walk to downtown and have dinner or attend any of the Lafayette events.

Please take the time to enjoy the yard and explore the abundance of plants and wildlife. Listed with the National Wildlife Federation as a Certified Wildlife Habitat.
I am available for garden tours if that is of interest.

Under two massive oak trees there is a fire pit for your use and an aged shed is the backdrop for your time in the garden.

Guests have commented that this location is a convenient jumping off point for many destinations in the area.

Fantastic house and host

My two buddies and I stayed at the Cottage while day hiking a section of the Pinhoti Trail. The 3 bedroom 2 Bath was perfect for our crew.Cottage has a fine kitchen with a great set of cookware, generously supplied coffee station, and an assortment of spices.Around back is a huge yard with space to park vehicles off street and a large outdoor covered patio. There’s tables and seating for a large family to enjoy. After our daily hikes lasting from four to six hours, we were drawn to the large back patio to relax and enjoy the afternoons. We were surprised at how much time we spent in this outdoor living area.Highly recommend this house and host!

Fun, historic home!

Needed a place to stay for a friend’s wedding and found this VRBO offering. Lovely historic home that has been well-maintained. Minus a few appliance/TV updates, it truly feels like you’re stepping into a time machine and going back 100+ years. Yet, everything is both functional and quite comfortable. Bed in the master bedroom was super comfortable! Only had one minor issue with a TV remote and it was quickly resolved by the owner. Excellent WiFi as well. Over 100 mbps both up and down. Wish we could have stayed longer and are actively considering booking again in the future to come back and take advantage of the nearby hiking trails.

Cottage LaFayette

This seems to be a historic home which still has the charm. May seem dated to some, but that is a personal preference. Our stay was short but pleasant. Janet, the host and Oliver (her large poodle) were very friendly and welcoming. Beds were comfy, and all our needs were accommodated.

Pleasant Stay in History Rich Home

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this historic cottage. We were in town for a family reunion and this home provided sufficient room for five adults and three children. The accommodations were well appointed and had everything we needed for the weekend. The historical architecture was amazing with soaring ceilings and spacious rooms. It was centrally located to all of our activities and places to eat. Janet was amazing. She was responsive to any questions we had prior to our arrival and addressed any questions we had once we got there. If we ever have to stay in Lafayette again, we would absolutely choose this location!

Holiday Stay

My husband and I stayed at this charming home over the Christmas holiday so that we could visit my daughter and her husband who live close to LaFayette. The house was extremely clean and exactly what you would expect from a home built at that time period. We absolutely loved it! The beds were so comfortable. The host was very accommodating and easy to communicate with when we needed. We will be staying here again and would recommend to anyone wanting a nice, clean and comfortable place to stay that is close to Chattanooga but quiet and relaxing.

Great house! Great host!

We stayed 3 nights at the historic home and were so pleased! The house is a gem, everywhere we looked there was another beautiful item or antique! Can't say enough about the comfort of the home, especially the master bedroom! The bed is awesome! Will stay again if we get to visit Chattanooga area and battlefield again. Hostess is wonderful to deal with and her dog is so sweet! Thank you Janet!

Loved it here!!!

This property was super cute and accommodating for my family, not far from anything we did during the week. There’s a renter that stays in a room downstairs but he was barely there. Janet was awesome and made sure we we were comfortable!! The back patio was awesome we spent a lot of time there. Would definitely stay here again!!!

Amazing!

Property is absolutely beautiful! Huge yard for kids and pets to play. We traveled to Georgia to see family and had enough space to grill and relax for 15 people! Has plenty of beautiful flowers, birds and had a deer come visit our last morning there. The house is huge and historical! Beautifully decorated, very welcoming and the beds are very comfy! Janet, our host, was fantastic and her dog Oliver is pretty amazing too❤️ We will definitely be back!

Awesome home for Our Adult Children and two Grandchildren from California.

Our adult children and our grandchildren recently stayed here for 4 days and 4 nights on their visit from Vista, CA in North San Diego County. Our two grandchildren are a boy, age 10 and a girl age 8. All four stated how much they loved staying in this home as well as how comfortable they were during their stay. We live in LaFayette nearby and although the four could have stayed at our home, they, as well as we were far more comfortable with them having their own space for their visit. Janet's home is furnished quite tastefully and very clean. They found, as we did that all amenities were perfect. We went to Lookout Mt Incline and Point Park one day, they toured Chickamauga Battlefield one day, played a round of golf at the beautiful LaFayette Golf Course and hit a couple of other spots in Chattanooga. Their visit to our little town was enhanced by Janet's beautiful home. We give it 10 stars!!!

Very cool historic home with dreamy outdoor sitting

The house was really neat and had nice size bedrooms, living room and dining room. I really loved the coffee table and nook and the windows with clear glass that you could see outside in. The outdoor sitting area in the back was absolutely dreamy with plants and a soothing water feature. The largest bed was soft though the other beds were more firm so depending on what you prefer there were choices. I also loved that I could close the gates which was very helpful when we were outside given the home is on a main road in this small town. There was a salon across the street and the small downtown nearby. My daughter got married in Ringgold at Flat Duck and this house was about 22 minutes and just a few turns away. The owner stayed in an apartment in the back so we were mindful not to block the driveway or leave the gate closed, and while she was incredibly responsive and easy to communicate she was invisible throughout our 3 night stay. I would absolutely stay here again and my only regret is that we were running around so much that we did not get to spend more time hanging out at the historic property.

As advertised, great value

My family takes a Fourth of July trip each year in the mountains. We go to different places each year so we can see and experience new things. Even though this home is not located in the mountains, it is very convenient to them. We chose this home because of it's location and great value. After all, you can stay in this large 3 bedroom home for the same amount of a tiny cabin with no amenities. The home is comfortable and as advertised. If you are looking for granite counter tops and garden tubs, this house is not for you. But, if you are looking for a quaint historical home with a cozy feel, you will enjoy this home. In early July, it gets hot in Georgia, but the central A/C worked great and we were always comfortable. Wi-Fi was also available and reliable making it easy to please the teenagers and to plan our outings each day. The home has minor renovations occuring, but it wasn't an issue and barely noticeable. This is good that the owner is investing in keeping it maintained. We enjoyed the neighborhood and we walked downtown a few times. Most of our time was spent away at places like Cloudland Canyon, Chattanooga, Chickamauga, and Rome. But when we came home each evening, we had a comfortable place to stay. Playing records from a great collection of music was an added bonus. We were also very convenient to groceries and restaurants! If you are into history, this is a great area to stay. The owner was very easy to work with and communicated with us well. She was genuinely there to please and accommodate us. Unfortunately, we had an issue where the oven didn't work. It was not able to be fixed while we were there, but not for a lack of trying. The owner went out of her way to try to make it right during this inconvenience, even offering to buy us a pizza or let us leave without financial penalty if we were dissatisfied. It was in inconvenience based on our menu planning, but we adjusted and appreciated the efforts and concern of the owner. If we ever find ourselves wanting to vacation in the area again, we would definitely stay here! Thanks for opening up your home to us and being so hospitable. This place is as advertised and a great value for a fun vacation with family or friends.

Charming home but not for us

Janet was a gracious & accommodating host. The house was mostly as described online and I really wanted it to work for us. It is an older home with many items in it that made it difficult to navigate with children; mine are ages 7, 9, 11, & 13, and nearly everything in the house was a "no touch." We were in the area to visit family for 8 nights and mainly used the house for sleeping overnight. Herein lay the issue: it is located on Bus. Hwy. 27 which is extremely busy during the night, much more so than I would have expected for a small, out-of-the-way town. The home is, naturally, not soundproofed; the central air fan was too rattly & loud to for us to run all night as a sound-barrier. We heard sirens, motorcyclists, and motorists with loud radios using the highway all night long. It honestly seemed quieter during the day but then we heard what sounded like a donkey braying from one of the neighbors. Additionally, there were homeowners (not the property manager, I think) mowing their lawns at 6AM, having loud house parties past 10PM, and leaving loudly barking dogs out late into the night. The host is indeed charming and gracious but no amount of that can redeem missing out on 8 nights of sleep. By our last couple of days visiting my family, whom I had not seen in 4-6 years, we were so exhausted we could barely function, and still had a 12 hour drive back home. If I ever visit La Fayette again, I would rather pay twice the price and endure twice the drive distance to get to my folks' homes in town, so that we can stay in a quiet & secluded cabin without having to deal with the city noise. A couple of other points: The home was cleaner than I expected but we did have to wash every dish we intended to use before using it. There is no dishwasher. I had to vacuum out the drawers before putting my clothing in due to crumbs & dust. I wanted to vacuum under the beds as it was not done but could not find a vacuum with attachments. Other than that I felt the cleanliness was acceptable, and it certainly exceeds the standards of most people's homes so that was appreciated. The home comes with plenty of towels, pillows, & blankets so unless you must have your own, be assured the host will provide these for you. There is a nice laundry room with washer & dryers so you can do laundry. Very convenient & much appreciated. The home is crammed full of items so you may find it difficult to keep your own items separate. Very few cleared spaces/drawers. Historic! :)

I love to travel and I also love unique architecture. My home was built in 1929 and is categorized as City Cottage style. I am only the third owner. After being built in 1929 it was sold very recently after that. I suspect, but have no proof, that the market crash may have forced the sale of their newly built home. The Campbell family purchased it not long after and lived in this home until I purchased it in 2006. The Campbell's were a notable Lafayette Georgia family. Mr. Campbell was the town Justice of the Peace.

Why they chose this property

Built in 1929, The North Main House has maintained it's original character. All lighting fixtures are original to the house. Heart pine throughout with heart pine revealed in living room. Transom windows, high ceilings, ornate woodwork, and special details throughout. British craftsman has done most of the restoration work staying true to original aspects of the building, plaster restoration, etc.
Guests comment that it is like stepping back in time, yet, you have all the comforts of modern convenience, high speed internet, big screen TV, digital thermostat, comfortable and plush bedding and furniture.

What makes this property unique

The home is tastefully decorated with a curated collection of antiques, vintage, and modern furnishings to create a comfortable stay. The grounds put emphasis on native and historic plantings. There are multiple areas to sit down and enjoy a historic and well preserved property convenient to all the local attractions.
The property is recognized as a National Wildlife Federation as a Certified Wildlife Habitat.
Conveniently located in the Historic District of Lafayette GA. Close to dining, grocery, drug stores. Also convenient to National Parks and Wildlife Management Areas. Good proximity to Chattanooga TN.
