ABOUT THE CABIN
Conley House was originally 2 cabins with a courtyard in between. The owner, Bill Brown Sr., later turn the cabins into 2 suites with an open floor plan living space between for him and his family. Bill Brown was director of Penland School after Lucy Morgan, the founder, retired. Railings and many other details are original to the home. The kitchen was made by well known woodworker, Doug Sigler. The cabin is filled with natural light in every room with each door framing the view. The home was designed to be passive solar, so it is not uncommon to be able to leave the doors open on warmer days in winter. The abundance of light makes the home a cheery place that is very relaxing. We have filled the house with commissioned and original artwork that we have collected over the years. We hope it inspires you!
Note: There is an artist studio with an office above it which sits adjacent to the cabin. It is not included in the rental.

VISITING IN THE OFF-SEASON
Views in winter are amazing! Hiking the Roan or to waterfalls can be spectacular with almost no one else on the trail. However, in winter (usually mid-December through February or mid-March) some businesses keep different hours or even close, while others do creative things like popup restaurants and special winter openings. If you are concerned about what might be available please ask us. We'd be happy to assist you in deciding if visiting in the off-season would be a good fit.
_____
CHILDREN:
Children are welcome. The house is a home - not a museum, so it can be a great place for families. We ask that parents be attentive, putting objects out of reach that may cause a problem or be damaged, putting delicate items or cords out of reach. Pack n’ Play with sheets, high chair, sippy kid friendly cups, plates, bowls and cutlery are available to guests.
_____
ADA: Though NOT ADA COMPLIANT, the house is accessible for a number of those who have mobility issues. The main house is all on one level and is flat from the gravel driveway/parking area into the backdoor. The doorways are at least 32” wide. Transitions between rooms are typically 1-2 inches on average. The transition out to the natural stone terrace is a little over 2-3 inches. The master bath has a walk-in shower that has no door and about a 2" lip/transition. The bathtub is separate. NOTE: there are no handrails in the showers, bathtub or toilet area. The master suite is spacious enough for additional equipment if it is required in the room during the stay. The other master suite’s bath would not be accessible due to proximity of the bed to the bathroom door and size of the bath. Please talk with us if you have particular concerns. Every person's situation is different.

Why they chose this property
At 3600 feet above sea level, the view is fantastic and the weather tends to be mild even in the depths of summer.
THE HOME'S HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The house was originally two cabins. Bill Brown, the first director of Penland School of Crafts after the retirement of its founder Lucy Morgan, connected the two cabins with a living space and made a home for his family. His studio and many of the original touches can still be seen, including the railings made by his son, Bill Brown Jr. who is now a studio artist.
Having been a resident artist and studio coordinator at Penland not long after Bill Brown retired, Rick Smith admired the property for years. When it became available, he and his wife Lisa knew they had found something special!
Penland School is important to the region of Appalachia because in the 1920s Miss Lucy, as she was often called, provided education and resources to local women, teaching them how to weave and sell their handmade goods. They now offer classes in all media and are the oldest and largest crafts school in America.
The history, beautiful surroundings, slower pace, artwork and the connection to the craft community all make Conley House quite exceptional! From the handmade cabinets and sinks to the stonework, artwork and tableware, you won't find another property like it . . . and, of course, it has a "million dollar view!"

What makes this property unique
We like to make it easy, because traveling can be stressful. By providing the basics like herbs and spices, flour, sugar and cooking oil, plus all the kitchenware and appliances you'll need, as well as things to help you relax, such as an assortment of teas, bath salts and infused bath oils our guests relax, get in vacation mode much faster and enjoy their stay more.
One the aspects of the house that sets it apart is all the attention to detail. From the complimentary bowl of chocolates and bath salts to the original artwork and craftsmanship, Conley House is not like any other vacation rental. Our guests often tell us that we "thought of everything!" We take pride in that, because we strive to make your stay something you will remember for years to come.
Conley House is clean, very private and has unobstructed views! It is located in a safe community of mostly studio artists and craftspeople. Being just 15 minutes to shopping, good restaurants and cafes, it is conveniently located, too.
