Pink beaches in Crete:
Contrary to the typical golden sands found on many beaches, the pink sand beaches of Crete boast a distinctive rosy hue, creating a picturesque and dreamlike ambiance that enchants visitors upon arrival. The delicate blush tones of the sand are a result of finely crushed shells, coral, and calcium carbonate deposits, which have been weathered over time, lending the beaches their signature color.
One of the most renowned pink sand beaches on the island is Elafonissi Beach, located on the southwest coast of Crete. This idyllic stretch of coastline features crystalline waters and powdery pink sands framed by rugged cliffs and verdant vegetation. Travelers can spend blissful hours basking in the sun, swimming in the azure waters, or strolling along the shoreline, admiring the natural beauty that surrounds them.
Historic Background
Our restored traditional setting is located in the traditional village Atsipopoulo, a historic village that has several stories to tell referring to its 700 years life, in Medieval & Renaissance times. The Venetians gradually established their rule over the island from 1210. There are many stories referring to Venetian dukes and noblemen in the area, army parades and dancing ceremonies of the 16th century but also to terrible battles against the Ottomans on the 17th. The coat of arms (stamp) of a great local commander Alessio Calergi, still visible by our pool has its origin in the year 1290.
Why Rethymno?
The advantages of staying in Rethymno, comparing to staying in other cities
in Crete:
- Not far from Chania and Heraklion airports - both cities reachable in 1 hour drive.
- Possibility to drive to the south coast in less than 1 hour.
- Easy access to the mountains and famous places/villages like Anogia, Margarites, Eleutherna, Arkadi.
- Many nice/famous beaches in short distance
- Access to many archeological sites like Eleutherna, Knossos.
- Smaller & more accessible town than Chania. You can move anywhere on foot, you don’t need a car.
- More authenticity
- Night life even in winter
-RETHYMNO is a city on the north coast of the Greek island of Crete. In the old town, the Venetian Harbor is filled with fishing boats and lined with tavernas. Rethymno Lighthouse was built in the 1830s. West, the hilltop Fortezza is a star-shaped, 16th-century citadel. The Historical and Folklore Museum preserves local crafts like textiles and ceramics. Long, sandy Rethymno Beach stretches to the east.
Rethymno, in Crete, is a rare combination of history and modern-day luxury, with its Venetian-era Fortezza fortress and multicultural Old old Towntown, tropical beaches and exquisite Cretan cuisine.
Walking around is like travelling back in time, to the period of Venetian rule in Crete. The Fortezza (fortress) sits at top Rethymno’s magical old town like a crown. And you can hear the echoes of the sea and as you walk along the Venetian port with its old lighthouse and get lost in the maze of alleyways, admiring the ornate doorways and the Venetian crests that decorate them. You’ll also visit the mosques with their minarets and hop between the dozens of shops, restaurants and cafes that give Rethymno its special atmosphere.
Cultural landmarks abound in Rethymno. The Neratzi Mosque (now a music conservatory) is an obvious meeting point because of its sky-high minaret (built in 1890). And the New Square is ringed by grand homes, the Catholic Church of St Francis and an Ottoman mausoleum and school. At Platanos Square, you’ll pass bustling restaurants and cafes and arrive at the famous Rimondi Fountain, constructed in 1626. Meanwhile, Makri Steno (long alley), which leads from the National Park to the Fortezza, with its Venetian homes and marble fountains, is one of the most beautiful streets in Rethymno.
Admire the Venetian port and lighthouse
Along Nearchou Road, you’ll get to the picturesque Venetian harbour with its restored lighthouse, built between 1830-40. And behind the port is the 16th-century Venetian Loggia.
Explore the beach that goes on and on
The largest beach on Crete (12km) stretches along the east side of the city, from Rethymno to Skaleta. You’ll take advantage of the water sports in the Adelianos Kampos and enjoy a quiet swim in the rocky coves of the Pegianos Kampos. All along the beach, you’ll find beach bars with umbrellas and lounge chairs, shops and hotels.
Enjoy authentic Cretan flavours and a glass of raki
Rethymno will introduce you to culinary treats inspired by Crete’s flavourful cuisine and famously tasty local produce. There are restaurants in old buildings with beautiful gardens, rakadika that serve meze complemented by the local schnapps-like drink raki, and quaint little tavernas to choose from.
The restored residence of two Venetian Councillors, the Ottoman mosque built by Sultan Ibrahim Khan (now hosting musical events), the Bishop’s Palace, the Ibrahim Khan Mosque, and cannons, bastions, and mansions… are just a few of the attractions that await you at the Fortezza, a 16th-century fortress. Many of Rethymno’s restored buildings host exhibitions and major cultural events, such as the annual Renaissance Festival.
Activities: Discover the Cretan culture, beautiful landscapes away from tourist areas, golden sandy beaches, breathtaking views, wildlife, Cretan herbs, traditional wine, raki, honey and olive oil, homemade food, the myths and traditions that will awaken all your senses.

Why they chose this property
Because this property is really adorable. Not only the quiet village atmosphere but also the kind friendly people living there. Climate is dry and healthy for asthma and more. Old houses coming of the past, here and there.
Most of the houses have a unique beauty with patios, arched doors, roofs and terraces. You can feel concentrated on them the Venetian art, the oriental opulence as well as Cretan tradition. Atsipolpoulo is a very interesting village. The houses have a unique beauty with patios, arched doors, roofs and terraces. You can feel on them concentrated Venetian art, oriental opulence and Cretan tradition.
The strategic importance of the village gave rise to many battles during the Ottoman occupation and to its eventual destruction by the Turks in 1866; many villagers earned a reputation in this period as brave warriors. The village was also the birthplace of several important men of letters, such as G. Chortatsis, author of the Cretan Renaissance dramas The Sacrifice of Abraham and Erophili.
To this day Atsipopoulo remains one of the most beautiful villages on Crete, not least because the inhabitants were quick to realise the value of its architectural features.
These have been respected, preserved and made such good use of that the village retains the appearance and grandeur of Venetian times.
Visitors are sure to be enchanted by the neighbourhoods, with their courtyards and doorways bearing dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as by the village's churches and other buildings.
Accommodation, dining and entertainment facilities are all available. In short, visitors attracted to Atsipopoulo are guaranteed to leave the area as the finest ambassadors Cretan tourism could wish for.
