About this property
Lakefront cottage, deep water, now booking Summer 2026
Situated immediately on the shore of Megunticook Lake, the largest freshwater body in the mid-coast region, “Babb Camp" enjoys spectacular views of the Camden Hills and the nature preserve, Fernald's Neck.
The camp is only 3 miles from the charms of the ocean-front town of Camden, with its many wonderful restaurants and shops, as well as a variety of opportunities to experience Penobscot Bay.
Located well-off the main road down a private road along a gently sloping wooded 2 acre lot, all the residents along this side of the lake are multi-generational owners and should you choose to stay here, you will have access to a very special section of the lake.
An American Bald Eagle is resident on the property most days and the loons can be seen swimming and heard calling at any hour day or night. Angler's can fish right off the dock or in the many coves nearby.
The Camp:
The building is an authentic example of a shingle style, traditional, rustic, Maine lakeside cabin. It has 4 upstairs bedrooms and 1 downstairs bedroom, generous living and dining area, a large kitchen, and a large, wraparound porch. In keeping with the era, there are exposed posts and beams, original glass windows, and an original Ben Franklin wood stove. The furniture includes LLBean Lodge leather sofa and chairs, and an imported farmhouse table. There is a 42 in flatscreen TV with internet connectivity, and comfortable Amish-built Adirondack chairs on the porch. The dock is positioned to receive all day sun and is surrounded by deep, fresh water, perfect for swimming and boating.

Camp Babbs is always fun. The lake is exquisite and the camp porch gives spectacular views of the Camden Hills. Well appointed and James & Jennifer are great hosts.

Beautiful location! The lake is magistic would happily return
Rustic, charming and wonderful experience on the lake. Jim and Jennifer are great to deal with and the "Babb Camp" is everything you'd want in a back to basics lake front experience. We had a tremendous time and would definitely go back!
Another magical stay at Babb Camp with family. Weather was not ideal but did not matter. We love the setting and the lake is so much fun. So much to do even in cloudy weather - hikes for all levels, trips to town, canoeing and kayaking. We will be back!!!
This was our first time to Lake Megunticook and we loved it- there are endless ways to enjoy the lake, we paddled the canoe and kayak across to a picnic spot for lunch, we swam every day, and my young children waded in the sandy shallow portion to search for special pebbles and frogs. The house has a long porch with picnic table and chairs, perfect for enjoying the water views and spotting loons. The house is a rustic seasonal cottage, it has a generous living area inside, including a large kitchen and dining area, a single bathroom, and bedrooms that connect. Owners were very responsive. Thanks for a lovely visit.
This is a structure built in the late 1880’s so it’s good to recognize that it lacks sound privacy between rooms and will require some sure footedness to navigate the staircases and the walkway to the dock. Given that, it was a magical place for our family to spend intimate time, enjoying the spectacular lake and views and sharing visits from the loons and bald eagle. I used the kitchen for cooking and baking and found it well supplied for equipment. We loved eating our meals outside on the porch! The owners were wonderful about answering questions and otherwise assisting when asked. We would have used the boats but didn’t have pfd’s with us. It’s really great also to be minutes from all that Camden has to offer. We made some lovely memories at the Babb camp during our week.
A charming old camp on a wonderful lake. The porch is a slice of heaven. The main living space is spacious and cozy, with lots of areas to tuck in, read a book, do a puzzle, and comfortably gather. The kitchen was well stocked. Communication with the owners was easy and super friendly! The second floor had lots of sleeping options and great lake views, but not every room is totally private as you have to walk through at least one. And some of the walls don't go to the ceiling, so it's quite rustic. Just good to know. We had a wonderful stay!

Thank you Amanda for your kind and thoughtful review. I just wanted to point out that there are two stairwells, so you don’t have to walk through any bedrooms to get to another bedroom. The back stairwell leads to the MBR and the 2nd BR and the front stairwell leads directly to bedrooms 3, 4 and 5. These same 3 bedrooms are open at the top which is a typical camp construction design historically, perhaps to improve airflow before there was electricity!
Such a wonderful 2 weeks. Listening to the loons, waking up to a magnificent view, sitting on the porch, deep water off the dock, kayaking to jumpers rock, fishing in the canoe, enjoying dinners on the harbor, hiking surrounding mountains and soaking in family time. We didn’t want our vacation to end! Huge thank you to Jennifer for being such a great host!
We had such a wonderful time at Babb Camp. We cherished our sunny September stay out on that amazing dock with Adirondack Chairs. Coffee in the morning and WOW those stars at night! Lake Megunticook is crystal clear and kayaking was such a joy. The American Bald Eagle visits were a highlight, and sleeping in that room with all those windows, magical. We would highly recommend this beautiful old-world camp to those looking for rest and relaxation with family and friends. M & J
We thoroughly enjoyed this charming lake house with beautiful views. Lake Megunticook water is crystal clear and clean with dramatic shorelines. Perfect for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and SUP. We relaxed on the dock at sunrise and sunset and loved playing cards and eating family meals on the front porch. The house had everything we needed and the hosts were very responsive. Would happily stay at Babb Camp again!
We have been spending time on Lake Megunticook for the better part of the last decade and it is always a wonderful experience. This may be my favorite spot to date. The camp has the rustic feel of a lakefront camp from a bygone era; flip flops and bathing suit are all that are required. You could not be closer to the lake. We had the pleasure of getting to know the bald eagle that visited each morning and “jumper’s rock” was a simple swim across the lake from the camp’s dock. An absolute delight!
This was our first time renting the Camp but will not be our last. It was our daughter’s first trip to Maine and definitively a memorable one. The view of the mountains and Fernald’s Neck from the house cannot be beat. The weather was variable but the covered deck was perfect as we were able to sit outside during the rain. We saw the resident bald eagle twice from the dock. The bedroom with the king bed and the sunroom were our favorite rooms in the house. Cannot wait for next summer. The hosts were very responsive leading up to our stay and were so willing to answer the many many questions I had. Thank you!
My wife and I had an absolutely wonderful time at Babb camp. It's a perfect rustic cabin that still provides all the needed amenities. The lake itself is incredible, and the house provides so many great spots to relax and enjoy the views. James and Jennifer were excellent hosts. We had a few small hiccups during our stay and they were incredibly responsive and immediately sprung into action. I would note to future travelers that this property isn't totally secluded. There are neighbors, which wasn't immediately clear from the photos. This wasn't an issue for us though, everyone around is very friendly. We'd definitely come back and enjoy another stay at Babb Camp!
A beautiful spot and comfortable rustic camp with all we needed for a great week. Excellent communication with owner. Fine paddling, fishing, and hiking. Thanks!!
We had a wonderful stay - the house is quintessential Maine camp and oh so relaxing. You can feel the memories that have been built here and it's lovely. We read on the porch, played cards, watched baby birds being fed by their parents, jumped off the wonderful dock into the deep water and were able to dock our boat. The lake is really beautiful with clean, deep water and fun to explore. Jim & Jennifer were always quick with a reply or suggestion. The master bedroom with all it's windows and views of the lake was heartwarming to wake up in, hearing the loons in the night. The neighbors showed us how they feed an eagle and were so friendly. I would definitely stay here again. Thank you for sharing your home! Two things of note, not criticism - the fridge is very small and though they have a ancillary dorm fridge, it was still a tight fit for us. We like to purchase all our groceries for the week for our family so we don't have to leave camp and it just wasn't enough space for us. Second, yes, the neighbors have a large group of friends and family and you could hear them talking and laughing but they weren't being obnoxious or overly loud and they are very friendly.
One week stay in perfect rustic cabin right on the lake. Amazing sunsets and sunrises. Perfectly placed 5 bedrooms suited two families and 6 kids. Keep an eye out for Freedom the bald eagle!

Beautiful view, classic Maine summer cottage
We stayed for over a week and enjoyed every day of it, rain or shine. This camp is the quintessential classic/rustic Maine cottage. There are no bells and whistles so if you are looking for updated amenities, and renovations, this is not your place. If you're looking for an authentic Maine lake cottage experience, this is your spot! It is kept in it's natural state (and well cared for)-a lovely, old, classic summer cottage-a rare find these days! We had guests come stay with our family throughout the week, and everyone was able to sleep comfortably-the house holds quite a few people, well. It can truly sleep 9-10 people comfortably. The house really had everything we needed and the owners were very responsive to any questions we had. We spent a lot of time on the very nice dock with gorgeous views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Listening to loons and enjoying the bald eagle that came to the tree next to the house, every day, were our favorite things to do from the gorgeous wrap around porch! There is some boat traffic that comes through that area of the lake, and one house next door that has a bit of people traffic, but nothing that effected us too much. The tranquility of the house, and the lake is unlike most places we've been. We would highly recommend Babb Cottage!

Our favorite family vacation rental property ever!
This property was just awesome for our multi-generation family vacation! In fact, we get together every year, and this is our favorite family vacation rental property ever! The "Babb Camp" dates back to the 1880's, and the antiquity and simplicity of the place, combined with the panoramic views of the Camden Hills, Fernald's Neck, and Lake Megunticook, make it feel timeless, completely relaxing, even kind of spiritual. We read on the dock, swam, kayaked, relaxed and visited on the porch. We visited Camden a few times, which offers a whole different experience, with the harbor, opportunities to get on the ocean, and great shops and restaurants. A great, great vacation!

Why they chose this property
This is one of the first cottages built on Megunticook Lake in the late 1800's by the Babb Family, with 180 degree views of the lake, the Fernald's Neck nature preserve, Maiden Cliff, and the Camden Hills. It has undergone many renovations and updates since then, but still retains the authentic air and charm of a classic Maine lake cottage. The cottage was featured in Conde Nast's Bon Appetit magazine (August 2016 edition).
