About this property

The Captain's Cottage

Old Victorian Home With Lovely Wrap-Around Porch for Relaxing and Entertaining
4 bedrooms, 1 sleeping alcove, 3 full baths, sleeps 6-10

Enjoy a beautiful turn-of-the-century home built by a Lake Michigan Merchant Marine Captain. The house is located three blocks from downtown shops, galleries and restaurants and the same distance to the boardwalk leading to beautiful Lake Michigan. The Captain's Cottage sleeps up to eleven and has three separate living areas -- main floor, second floor and a studio apartment. While you can enjoy each others company for meals and interaction, you can also have privacy when desired.
The main floor of the Captain's Cottage, decorated in costal eclectic style, has a kitchen, large dining room seating eleven, living room with gas fireplace, master bedroom with queen bed, and second bedroom with a queen and daybed. The kitchen is well-stocked with a stove, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and toaster (sorry, no dishwasher). The second floor has a bedroom with a queen, a sleeping alcove with two twin beds, a living room, kitchen and full bath. The studio apartment has a double bed, full bath and combination refrigerator/stovetop burners.
While other cottage advertisements mention porches and sundecks, the Captain's Cottage wrap-around covered porch is one of the amenities guest enjoy the most. One section is large enough to gather all guests together for conversation and refreshments, another section has an octogonal picnic table and the third section has a comfortable wicker sofa for quiet reading or napping.
Saturday to Saturday rentals.
Older home with lots of folk art in quiet area of town so requires 'gentle' use.
No smoking or pets.

Perfect spot for a large family

We love staying at the Captain's Cottage. It has become a family tradition and is the highlight of our summer. The location is perfect for walking downtown or to the beach and the size of the house is great for our kids to explore and to invite friends to stay with us. Everything we need is provided on site or just a few blocks away.

Fantastic location!

A very charming home that accomodated our group of 10 nicely. The dining table was huge and the front porch was awesome for hanging out at any time of day. The town was a short walk and the beach a short drive. Certain members of our group took advantage of the closeness of the Pronto Pup and Dairy Treat daily, sometimes more than once! Since we were there during a busy week we were thankful to have so many parking spaces behind the house. Overall a nice place to stay!

Charming Victorian in Grand Haven

On a quiet residential street, just three blocks from the channel in Grand Haven sits the quaint and homey Captain's Cottage. You will fall in love with the house and all its turn of the century appointments including wooden door casings and pocket door divided the dining room from the living room and huge wrap around porch. This place is perfect for family reunions, sleeping at least ten people! The house kitchen has everything you need plus a gas grill for renter's use. Linens and towels are provided. And best of all it is in walking distance of downtown for excellent dining and shopping, there's a wonderful playground for the kids and the beach at Grand Haven State Park on beautiful Lake Michigan is gorgeous. I highly recommend this property for its reasonable rates, atmosphere and location.

Huge, Colorful, Beautiful Vacation Home!

This home was perfect for our Grand Haven Vacation. Our family of 11 all had plenty of room- lots of beds and it worked out to where there was a room for each family that was staying. Also, a downstairs living area with a TV and an upstairs living area too- just tons of space for everyone to either be all together or do their own thing. They had tons of kitchen items to use, so we cooked our own meals almost every night we were there and ate at the super long table in the dining room. Lots of extra bath towels, really everything you would need at home! We loved the huge front porch to hang out for coffee in the morning, and ice cream at night, and just to hang out! We loved the neighborhood for walking and riding bikes, it was so close to downtown and the beach- just a perfect location. Plenty of parking in the back- we had 4 cars (3 of which were SUVs) so that was perfect too. The owners were very helpful, responsive and friendly! We had the best vacation and hope to go back next year!

Great!

My husband, children & grandchildren enjoyed our stay at the Captains Cottage. The house is large and easily accommodated all 9 of us. Spacious parking lot behind the cottage for all three of our vehicles. The large wrap around porch was nice in the evenings as well. We were literally just a 5-6 minute walk from downtown Grand Haven or the Dairy Treat around the corner for ice cream and just a 15 minute walk to the beach & boardwalk!

Wonderful location; room enough for everyone'

Great location, marvelous front porch where we spent lots of time. We could walk almost everywhere. Nicely appointed kitchen with plenty of pots , kitchen gadgets, well functioning stove and refrigerator. We wished it had a dishwasher but we used lots of disposables and everybody helped with the cleanup. Wonderful dining room table with room for all 10 of us for meals and games. Grill was great too.

Very nice Victorian home.

Loved the location, within walking distance of town. Favorite thing was the dining table, as we could all eat together. Kitchen is small and no dishwasher, but we took turns! Had a great week at Captains Cottage.

Great Family Getaway

We had a big family group with my husband and me, our grandkids ranging from 4th grade through high school and college, and their parents. This is the perfect house for a family reunion by the Lake. We all walked the few blocks to town, explored the safe neighborhood, hiked the 20 minute boardwalk to the swimming beach, stopped daily at Pronto Pup, took in the musical fountain, grilled our suppers out on the gas grill, and all watched the Democratic Convention on TV and hung out with games and visitors. There was room for everyone, yet privacy for those who needed down time. We had a birthday party on the big front veranda which can seat a whole gang at once. Even if someone just wants to sit and stare and rest, there are a lot of fun furnishings and artwork to delight the eye in this wonderful Victorian home. It is a place to savor being together.

Great family home-two blocks to beach and town!

Wow! This house was fantastic. Loved everything about it to the front porch (which was our favorite for breakfast lunch and dinner! ) to the back yard which had a back porch as well as a large area for parking. This home is perfect for a large family gathering. The inside was warm and cozy. The owners were fantastic and very accommodating.

Comfortable and delightful

My wife and I stayed at The Captain's Cottage with two other couples, old friends we hadn't seen in a while. We had a wonderful time. The cottage is ideally suited to this sort of thing: there is ample room for everyone to be together, or for a little private time. We spent most of our time gathered on the porch, with the main floor living room as fallback in the cool evenings. Some of us cooked or grilled, and we all enjoyed dinner in the large dining room. The decor is delightfully eclectic. The neighborhood is quiet and excellent for walks. Downtown is two or three blocks away, and the pier only a little farther. The property is well equipped and well maintained. We were all very happy with our stay and would gladly come back again. It's almost too bad all our kids are grown-- there was plenty of room and they would have loved it, too!

Exceptional Rental!

This rental is absolutely charming! Location alone makes this rental perfect for your stay in Grand Haven, but the decor, the front porch, and the space of this home are so comfortable you may do more relaxing than sight seeing. Perfect for a large family or group. I highly recommend this rental and we'll no doubt be back again!

Great house for a large family

This house was a perfect fit for our family of 13 (we had 8 adults, 3 kids and 2 babies under 1). The house was divided nicely so if we wanted to be together we could, but we also had space to get away. It was a little walk to the beach and we could walk with some of the kids, but we also would drive. The house is located in a nice quiet neighborhood. Todd was always very helpful when we had questions. I would definitely recommend this house to anyone that wants to stay in the Grand Haven area.

About the host

Hosted by Todd and Patti Johnson

Host profile image
We live in the Grand Rapids area about 40 miles from Grand Haven. We purchased the property so we could spend time with our family at Lake Michigan. We, and our adult children, use the cottage during the year and rent it out 1-2 weeks during the summer .

Why they chose this property

We were drawn to the Captain's Cottage because of the large wrap-around porch. We and our guests spend lots of time out there morning, afternoon, and evening. We also like that the house is large enough so that if you want some privacy you can go to one of the many rooms and be by yourself when needed.

What makes this property unique

We are located in a quiet part of town about 1/3 of the way between downtown and the lake. If you enjoy folk art, you will enjoy the way Patti has decorated the house.
