Keep reading for a little taste of the life here in Pavones, Costa Rica...

The bay of Pavones is one of the few truly unspoiled corners of paradise left in Costa Rica where endangered monkeys lunch in fruit trees at the side of the road, scarlet macaws squawk overhead and giant dazzling blue butterflies flap by. Amidst this beauty is where you'll find the 150 acre Finca Estrella and her four modern rental houses, Casa del Sol having one of the most wonderful views. The neighbors are all wonderful friendly Ticos (Costa Ricans) so, if you want to absorb the real Costa Rican culture, this is the place to stay. Finca Estrella is only minutes from beautiful beaches, refreshing rivers and the local surf breaks.

Awaiting you at Casa del Sol are comfortable sofas and mattresses, a covered terrace perfect for relaxing, entertaining and absorbing the breath-taking views/stunning sunsets or stargazing, a palm-covered rancho where you can laze in a hammock and swing in the breeze in the heat of the day - everything you need to have a fantastic vacation.

The beaches are wild and stunning, the perfect kind for beach-combing, and the warm waters are fantastic for surfing (rent a board) and boogie boarding. Or, if you fancy something different, follow dolphins watching silvery fish jumping in the waves while you stand-up paddleboard in the perfect water at Pilon. If you prefer to stay on the sand then there are a myriad of beautiful seeds to find, kite-surfers to admire, seabirds by the dozen. Pick up fish for the grill on the way home from the fishermen, most likely your only companions on the endless stretch of perfect sand. Local fishermen will happily oblige if you want to join them in their boats to catch some mackerel, sea bass, snook (robalo), dorado (mahi-mahi) or red snapper. For the more adventurous, inshore or offshore sportfishing can be arranged with Zancudo Lodge or the marinas of Golfito. Boat trips can also be arranged for visits to the Osa Peninsula, the Orchid Gardens, Wild Animal Refuge, Zipline Canopy Tours or Kayaking in the Rio Coto (River) - whales, dolphins and turtles are often spotted from the boats. You can even waterski and kite-surf!

Trek with our guys, Freddy and Enrique, around the extensive finca bird/butterfly/wildlife watching amongst the myriad of exotic flowers and fruit trees - pineapples, mangoes, watermelons, papayas, cashews, a wonderful type of lychee, coconuts, guavas, cacao (yes, you can make chocolate!) ice cream beans, oranges, lemons, and grapefruit all grow on the finca. Or head to the local waterfalls - walk or take the horses - and lunch in the cool shade on mossy logs before taking the plunge and clambering up the rocks to stand under the waterfalls' refreshing torrent. The 'pozo' - swimming hole - at the Cuervito River is a must on a hot day. Jump off rocks or fallen logs and relax in perfect surroundings listening to your jungle 'music'. Gold has been found in the local rivers so let the guys know if you would like to try your hand at gold-panning.

On 'rest' days, the hammocks by the beautiful 18m swimming pool will be waiting for you. Swing serenely listening to the toucans, clicking butterflies, the buzzing of hummingbirds' wings, the parrots' chatter or other exotic birds (over 200 kinds have been spotted) and Freddy or Enrique will gently nudge you when the monkeys/sloths/anything else you would like to see is around. Or relax and let Grace paint jungle flowers on your toe-nails so you can take a bit of your vacation home with you......

The water spouts from passing whales have been spotted from the finca - the gulf teems with sealife so always keep a lookout.

Loved it
I absolutely loved staying there. Kristin was incredible. I arrived solo and had no idea what to do. Kristin was excellent at giving me places to go and events that I could go to also. Her husband Eric was awesome too with anything that needed repaired. Freddy too! All super nice, super friendly group of people. I am staying there again.

A better paradise than we could have imagined
In a short sentence: this place is special. We have never been anywhere as magical as Pavones. We had the luxury and privacy of a jungle home with all the amenities, while still having the ability to go into town, meet locals, and make friends. The Finca is an amazing community. We were treated like family from the moment we arrived. Freddy was kind and responsive to every need. Crispin was attentive, and made sure the house had everything we neeeded to be comfortable. Grace cleaned and did our laundry each week to perfection. We got massages with Beti right on our porch, serenaded by the sounds of the ocean and the jungle. The view from the property was unbeatable. Despite being 20+ minutes from Pavones proper, this was the escape we craved. We enjoyed being in town, but always relieved to return to the Finca for ultimate relaxation and the pool. The wifi allowed us to hold frequent Zoom calls. We were able to remotely work without any trouble. Freddy was patient and kind and took time to practice Spanish with us. Our Spanish rapidly improved during our stay. The locals are happy to teach you and they are equally grateful to learn more English. Enrique took us on many tours and opened up his home to us for the holidays. We loved hearing about the history of Pavones, as both Enrique and Freddy's families have been there for generations. This was immersion, not tourism. And it was better than we could have imagined. We can't wait to return.

Best view and peaceful
For tranquility and disconnecting from a modern world, this rental was perfect. We stayed for 2.5 months and enjoyed the epic view, scenery, pool, and small surfer town of Pavones. The roads are rough, be sure to have a 4x4 with high clearance. You’re also in the middle of nowhere and can expect 30 minute travel time to Pavones. Not recommended for families with health conditions as any emergency would be a great risk. Don’t expect reliable Wi-Fi. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. The hosts are very helpful and compassionate. Freddy and Grace, the local support, made us feel like family.
