Lovely Victorian-era home (built in 1906 in a Dutch Colonial style) with tropical ambiance and décor, situated within prime, barefoot strolling distance (just 2 BLOCKS!) from the beach. Ready to host your family, the roomy 2,300 sq ft house has 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths (includes one en suite), plus outdoor shower with hot/cold, comfortable living room (with a tropical tiki vibe), big kitchen with cozy breakfast table for your morning coffee, separate dining room, internet/Wi-Fi, two televisions, plus nice book library. Original wood floors on first floor with area rugs.

Mattresses and box springs are deluxe gel-foam core over individual coils, on high profile frames. Updated windows, storm doors, shutters, driveway, privacy fence, outdoor shower and more, plus inside updated area rugs, ceiling fans, fresh paint, light filtering blinds, and several major appliances. Recent 2022-2024 updates include new living room furnishings and new a/c units. New propane grill as of Fall 2024 season.

The Hula House has one of the largest fenced yards on Lewes Beach and actually has TWO yards – a small side fenced yard plus a big rear yard fully enclosed by a 7-foot privacy fence, large deck, picnic table and umbrella, roomy outdoor shower (hot/cold), and a grassy area for sunning or play. ABSOLUTELY NO ANIMALS OR PETS ARE PERMITTED ON PROPERTY.

The home's front porch is the perfect place for enjoying a lemonade while people-watching (front porch has two picnic tables, ideal for Maryland Blue Crab feasts!). While everyone on vacation wants to enjoy the many dining opportunities in the area, Guests will appreciate the spacious kitchen with electric stove/oven, fridge, microwave, Keurig coffee pod machine and dishwasher.

Great location, with a quick, barefoot, 1.5 block walk to the public beach or enjoy a short 5-block stroll to the canal with its restaurants, and charter fishing and sight-seeing cruises, OR walk to the historic downtown area just across the canal bridge and filled with many small boutiques and restaurants. Bike, or hop in your car, for a 1-mile drive down to the Cape-May-Lewes Ferry (a 90-minute ferry ride each way, and great for dolphin watching and just relaxing), or visit Cape Henlopen State Park and the many programs they offer for kids and adults alike, plus the waves of the Atlantic Ocean at the public beach!

For those Guests who don't want to worry about packing their own towels and linens, we work with an excellent local company that provides everything a vacationer might need - from beach towels and bed linens to bikes and beach chairs. Almost all of our Guests take advantage of this service and have let us know they appreciate the convenience and very reasonable fees, and quality of the linens/towels. Guests just notify us a couple days in advance of arrival if they want to rent linens/towels and we will put them in touch.

We strive to consistently provide our Guests with a comfortable, clean, and enjoyable stay. The Hula House is Hawaiian-tropical-eclectic, clean, relaxed and fun, and is the perfect place for vacationers who hold the Aloha spirit in their soul.

The home is an animal-free zone. Absolutely NO pets/animals are permitted due to a member of our family being on immuno-suppression drugs. We expect those with any animal to respect this guideline, rather than selfishly ignoring the safety concerns of our family.

No smoking or vaping inside, or near house open windows or doors.

Guest count is limited to a max of 8 (see listing); no additional persons permitted.
All members of rental party must be disclosed when placing reservation.

Wonderful place to enjoy the beach in Lewes! Easy walk to beach or downtown and easy to get to the bike trail if you enjoy biking too. The kitchen was well stocked to cook our meals when we didn’t want to order out. The fenced backyard was very nice for relaxing. We had 3 generations in our group and our stay was enjoyed by all. Pictures are a good representation of the house. Very enjoyable stay!

We had a good week with family here in August of 2025. The home is in great condition and has a nice location close to the Savannah Street beach in Lewes as well the downtown area. The kitchen is large and well equipped. The presence of a ground floor bedroom and bath was appreciated by the grandparents. It is also close to Cape Henlopen State Park and the Lewes-Cape May Ferry.

Our experience at Hula House

Overall, our stay was good. Conveniently close to beaches and downtown shops. For 8 people, the living room was a little small. The outside spaces and front porch were excellent. The bed in the first floor bedroom was difficult to get into due to it's height. Communication with the owner was excellent.

Location, location, location!

We love to vacation in Lewes, DE but we usually stay at the Home 2 suites nearby. This was our first "beach house" experience, and it didn't disappoint! The vintage Hawaiian themed house was so charming and fun! We like to cook while on vacation, and the kitchen was well equipped and convenient. The newly mounted microwave above the oven was a plus...leaving plenty of counter space for food prep! We loved popping over to the little store next door to browse the variety of beach items for sale (we got postcards and ice cream!). It is literally about a 3-5 minute walk to the Lewes beach. We also went biking at Cape Henlopen (one of our favorite activities) and it was only a 5-minute drive! Overall, we had a wonderful stay at the Hula House and enjoyed it's many conveniences and location!

End of Summer Getaway

We had a lovely time at the Hula House in late August. The home was conveniently close to the bay beach as well as the quaint town area. We all enjoyed relaxing on the porch in the evenings. We hope to return soon!

Great Location

We loved the Hula House! Clean and comfy, it was perfect for 7 of us. We loved the Hawaiian theme. Location is great, an easy walk to beautiful Lewes Beach as well as to the marina, or downtown Lewes for shopping or restaurants. The owner was easy to work with, and quick to respond to any questions. She even sent a recommendation about a tour offered at Cape Henlopen, which our family enjoyed.

This property is very kitschy, the decor never wavers from the Hawaiian theme and it’s very cute. We had everything we needed and a short (very) walk to Lewes bay beach and Dairy Queen. Hulu house

Hulu house is a great vacation house. Walking distance to many things and a great front porch to sit and watch the beauty around you. My mother celebrated her 89th birthday there and the house was perfect for her to get around in. I Recommend Hulu house to anyone who wants to relax and enjoy.

Lovely well equipped home with comfortable furniture, fun unique decor and a great location. A couple of things detracted from the enjoyment of our stay: there was major construction going on next door which made sitting outside during the day not very enjoyable because of noise. (I feel we should have been alerted to this at the time of booking and offered a discount. When I raised it with the owner, she was not inclined to agree.) Windows in the house couldn't be opened so we couldn't let fresh air in and proximity to the ocean would have made that nice. There is no window in the downstairs bedroom though there is an A/C unit in the adjacent bathroom that keeps the room cool. The beds are very comfortable but quite high off the ground which might be a bit difficult for people on the shorter side or small kids. (Fortunately, we were all on the tall side :-). Lastly, the TV has channels with movies but all with ads -- no Netflix, for example, which would be a very nice addition.

Great location, right on Savannah road which is the main road going to the beach in Lewes. Only a couple of blocks from the beach. Easily walkable to the beach, Dairy Queen, convenience store, the marina, and downtown. Nice front porch for relaxing and people watching as people come and go to the beach. Near Bay Avenue, great for bike rides. Ideal if you have someone is has limited mobility since there is only a couple small steps into the home and a downstairs bedroom with a bathroom. Nice private patio in the back, great for morning coffee. Large kitchen with all the necessities and washer dryer.

Beachy vibes

Annette was a pleasure to work with and the house was just as described—quite comfortable and Hawaiian themed. Very nice new bathrooms, older kitchen but equipped with all the basics. Best of all, very short walk to Bay beaches and ice cream! Only minor downside is that it is on a busy street but the bedrooms all have white noise machines. It is an old house with window AC units but they do a very good job cooling the entire house. Despite the central location the backyard feels quite private due to lovely new fence, and the outdoor shower is great. I would not recommend if you have toddlers given decor. We had a great week here!

Great location - average stay

The location of this property is fabulous as advertised. The outdoor space was lovely and comfortable. We don’t plan to book again. The house was dusty and had a strong dust smell. I believe the main source was all the Hawaii decorations tchotchkes or the old upstairs carpet. The beds were comfortable but the comforters were stained. The owner had a lot of rules posted throughout the house and throughout the l booking process. Sometimes you rent from someone you can tell gets a lot of joy from sharing their home with others. This was not one of those times.

We're a military family, and "retired" young after the end of a successful Army career, whereupon hubby embarked on a second career as public school teacher, deciding to retire from that once Covid upended the teaching environment. While we only get to stay in Lewes a few times a year, it is a part of our hearts and history - camping trips to Cape Henlopen State Park, riding the Cape May-Lewes Ferry service, catching toads under the pine trees, playing "bunny count" games while driving down Cedar Street (with extra points when a fox or deer is spotted!), walking to Kings Ice Cream in town for a late night cone any night of the week. We LOVE Lewes. And so will YOU!

Why they chose this property

The Hula House has only had one owner before ours - it belonged to the family of the respected town Fire Chief, who passed away about 10 years ago. Built in 1907, several generations of his family had lived in the house until our purchase. Now, our family and friends have become an integral part of the home's history, and we intend to keep this lovely example of classic Dutch Colonial Lewes Beach architecture in our family for generations to come! Visit us, and you'll see why we love this grand old home.
