Todmorden is a Yorkshire working market town . There's lots going on with its market, art and crafts shops, Incredible Edible Todmorden - famed worldwide for promoting community growing and sharing of produce - and it is set in the wonderful Pennine hills on the border between Yorkshire and Lancashire. The opportunities for hill walking are endless and our house is right on the edge of open country. Both the Calderdale Way and the famous Pennine Way pass very near to us. Calderdale is also interesting for the network of canals, rivers, railway and roads that run through it - it's a lovely walk along the canal to Hebden Bridge. There are several pleasant cafes where you can enjoy a coffee and lovely vegetarian food. Hebden Bridge - another picturesque town with delightful shops and cafes is only few miles down the valley and there’s a regular bus and train services there.
Todmorden is a vibrant and thriving market town in the Calderdale Valley, West Yorkshire. There's many independent shops and cafe's. Todmorden's industrial history is still very much apparent not just in terms of architecture but also with the busy canal and railway network.
In terms of things to do once you're here, there are many fantastic walks, cycle routes and horse rides around the town, depending on length, time available and experience, these could range from a walk to the impressive and ever present Stoodley Pike, built to commemorate the end of the Napoleonic Wars, or a gentle stroll on the canal towpath taking in the award winning Fielden Wharf. Also, the Calderdale Way, Pennine Way and Mary Towneley Loop pass through or very close to Todmorden. There is also a self-guided walk around the town centre, which takes in the stunning architecture, the Town Trail, which can be bought online as can maps, books and leaflets for all kinds of outdoor activities. The gritstone outcrops also provide an opportunity for bouldering.
Todmorden Town Hall, hosts visits and on the first Sunday of every month there is a free tour of the Grade 1 listed building. Alternatively, you can book a guided tour with one of the fully trained volunteer guides and visit the Heritage Centre, ballroom, Mayor's Parlour and Council Chamber. The building is a fine example of Neo-Classical architecture and the carved stonework of the external pediment represents the town's links to both Yorkshire and Lancashire.
Also worth a visit is Centre Vale Park, which is newly re-open after recent environmental works. With its backdrop of Buckley Wood, it is a scenic delight and provides bowling greens, a sculpture trail, children’s play-area, a skateboard park, a unique bandstand, a tranquil memorial garden as well as a reptile house and aviary.
The Hippodrome Theatre puts on various musicals, plays and shows throughout the year. The town also has its Toy and Model Museum and a well-stocked library. Annual events include a carnival, agricultural show, beer festival
Todmorden is friendly Pennine town, not as trendy as nearby Hebden Bridge but with an industrial heritage evidenced in the canal and local buildings. Shops, pubs and local restaurants are plentiful and good value. There’s a market most days of the week and two supermarkets (Morrison’s and Lidl). Tod has great NHS facilities, a leisure centre, a theatre and Incredible Edible, a group which grows fruit and vegetables around the town for anyone to pick.
Walking locally is superb. You can go the length of the canal to Manchester or up along the tops. Favourite walks include Todmorden beach – a patch of sand on one of the reservoirs that’s popular in summer. You can see Stoodley Pike from the house, part of the Pennine way which runs up to the right of the house. There’s also National Trust heritage site Hardcastle Crags at Hebden Bridge.
INCREDIBLE EDIBLE
Todmorden is the home of the original Incredible Edible project, an urban gardening project started in 2008. Vegetables, herbs and fruit are now grown, by volunteers, all around the town, for anyone to pick and use. All of the Incredible Edible growing sites, are within a short, walking distance of our house.
The town of Todmorden, home to Incredible Edible, the Lucky Dog and was also recently featured in BBC 1's Countryfile,. Todmorden offers a thriving indoor and outdoor market, shops, pubs and cafes. Enjoy walks from the doorstep across the Bronte's beloved Moors, visit the village of Heptonstall with its two historic pubs, or explore the home of the Bronte sisters in nearby Haworth. There are many fantastic walks, cycle routes and horse rides close to this Todmorden cottage, from a walk to the impressive Stoodley Pike, built to commemorate the end of the Napoleonic Wars, or a gentle amble to Orchan Rocks, Whirlaw Rocks, Bride Stones, Britain's highest beach Gaddings Dam or along the canal towpath to the town of Hebden Bridge which is five miles away and boasts interesting nightlife, curiosity shops, and the old cinema where they serve tea and scones at the interval! Additionally, the Calderdale Way, Pennine Way and Mary Towneley Loop pass through or are very close to Todmorden.

We had the most amazing stay in this house over the weekend! The house keeper was always just a text away and so quick at responding! The house is absolutely amazing, such a beautiful place and location ❤️ I really could not recommend this place enough. Thank you so much for having us and letting us send our friend off into married life in style!
Great house to host our family, as we were going to my daughter's wedding.
Amazing en suite rooms. So get there first. Comfortable beds, good nights sleep.
Lovely welcome basket, great additional stuff, like Wup liquid, herbs and spices. Bathroom essentials etc
Soft towels. Great hot tub.
We rented for a 70th birthday with 16 friends. The house is superbly presented and very suited to a large gathering. The main room easily accommodated us all and was brilliant for socialising. Bedrooms were lovely. we didnt use the grounds (too cold!) but the hardy ones braved the hot tub and approved. Area is lovely for walks. Check in and communication with the Housekeeper were brilliant. Not easy to find venues for this size of party, but this is a gem!
This lovely house is perfect for a large group. The pictures don’t do the living space justice. The dining table easily seats 17. There was plenty of room for all of us to chill- I loved that there were multiple rooms to hang out in. The outdoor space with the hot tub was gorgeous with views over the hills. We even had some resident sheep from the field next door milling about which was sweet. The layout of the bedrooms worked really well and the top floor bedroom was stunning. The owners thought of every little detail - the kitchen already had everything we could possibly need. The team were always quick to respond and very friendly to talk to. The location was perfect, being only a few minutes walk from the canal and a very easy commute via car or public transport into Manchester. We would definitely stay again!
Everything was spot on from start to finish. The communication with David and then via Jayne was brilliant- any questions or concerns I had they were always promptly willing to help. They were flexible with check in time. The property was exactly how we expected and wanted. It is spacious and clean with beautiful views and a dreamy hot tub in a lovely area. It was the perfect party house. Jayne even posted me my charger back when I left it!! The only initial surprise to me was that it was next to the main road but this really didn’t matter when we were there and when you’re round the back you can’t even tell. Thank you so much for a fabulous stay. Couldn’t recommend highly enough for a group stay.
Had no end of problems with Vrbo trying to make final payment. Lots of stress caused. House was perfect for our purposes and lady who ran it was excellent.
The house was everything and more, beautiful spacious, clean and modern.
Bedrooms were beautifully decorated, and beds lovely and comfy.
Hot tub, bbq and enough space to have some alone time. Would stay again with family to go walking and visit the lake.
We had an amazing weekend
The house was perfect for our group
One small downside which didn’t impact our short stay too much was a lack of comfortable seating in the main living area
Renting experience went well though Covid restrictions meant that we were very unsure until the last minute if the holiday would take place.
Interesting property, plenty of space for 14 people of various ages.
Kitchen was missing several pieces of equipment, but these were quickly provided by housekeeper. Property is right on a busy road, so quite a lot of traffic noise. Not enough comfortable seating in either lounge.
Despite these comments, would recommend Bird i'th hand, comfy beds, good showers, endless hot water, good hot tub and a great place for walking, site seeing and shopping.
As a family of 15, it was perfect for us. Beautiful setting although when we arrived we were surprised that it was on a main road as we had small children with us.There was no need to worry as there is plenty of garden for them to play on at the back. The property was really clean and everything that we wanted and needed
We recently stayed at this house to celebrate my 40th birthday. It was fantastic from beginning to end. Jayne looks after the property and was really helpful with any questions we had, and it was a lovely touch to get a welcome package with milk and snacks.
The house itself was immaculate with everything you need. Despite the weather the views from the hot tub were beautiful and towels are even provided.
The canal path is only over the road and we walked to a lovely pub called The Summit for some proper home cooked food.
Would highly recommend!
Stayed recently for a hen do and property was great , well stocked kitchen and space for a large group . Great communication from house keeper who was lovely and accommodating . Would defo recommend.
It's an amazing place, much better than the pictures
The check in instructions were spot on, found the place with no problems at all. The house is bigger than I expected, very spacious, clean and had everything we needed. The views from the Jacuzzi alone is worth the money you would pay to stay in this property. Overall, an unforgettable and great experience, only wished I booked it for longer.
Stopped here with my wife and 2 kids (12 and 16), the house was obviously massive for a family of 4 but we all appreciated the extra space. The house was immaculate on arrival, the cleaners/housekeeper clearly work hard to prepare the house for new guests.
We were there for a few nights to celebrate my wife's birthday and despite the horrendous weather we had an amazing time.
The house is huge! What we did notice is the finish of the decorating/furnishing was in a different league to places we have stayed previously, we stayed in another large house a couple months ago for 3 times the cost of this but the quality of the house is on a different level.
The hot tub was glorious, the views are amazing
The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you could possibly need, we cooked a couple of meals in the time we were there and had no issues at all.
This is not a complaint with the house more info for anyone booking. we normally arrange a supermarket delivery for the day we arrive and have never had any problems, but only sainsbury's recognized the postcode (despite there being a morrisons 5-10 minutes down the road). In the end the delivery driver from Sainsbury's couldn't find the house despite me speaking to him on the phone and he just didn't bother turning up, after contacting their support centre the delivery had just been cancelled and blamed me for putting in the wrong address. The address was the exact same address i entered on google maps to get there and arrived just fine! So word of advice, if you want a delivery don't use sainsbury's
Contact with the owner and house keeper was great, they were very responsive when i had some queries, couldn't fault the house at all, wouldnt hesitate to book again
This property was exactly the place we were looking for. Weather was great a lot of space and jacuzzi was a good touch. Would defo recommend this place to stay 5*
This is a beautiful property with plenty of space to sleep/socialise. We had 6 kids with us and there was a separate room for them to play in too. Great canal/hill walks over the road from the property. Loved the hot tub. Hosts were great with communication/instructions. It is on main road so slight noise with traffic - no bother though. We had a lovely time staying here. Thank you!
Beautiful property, views are fantastic. Great for a large group
Lovely property. The weather wasn't right for the hot tub, which would be great in the summer. The welcome gift was much appreciated. The facilities and rooms were all great. The views were great but you are on a main road. However there wasn't any road noise as it is well insulated. The property has lots of character. Everyone in the group enjoyed their stay.
As a large group of work friends we recently stayed at the bird ith hand for the weekend to celebrate birthdays, hen do an a retirement. What can I say the house is beautiful, the owners very helpful and answered any queries in a timely manner and the surrounding area was also lovely. Would I stay here again? Yes definitely x
