Cool Funky 70’s Cottage
John and Dee
About John and Dee
We use to rent our Funky Cottage on a yearly basis, then one day we woke up and decided this place was too cool not to stay there ourselves, but not being made of money and with no prospective wealthy relatives on our horizon we realized we would need to share her with the world, so we got to work and made you and ourselves a Funky Cottage Hideaway. …We frequent many Auctions and love to pick up eclectic pieces. We live in a beautiful Bungalow in Green Cove Springs that we have overfilled with our FINDS so these” treasures” are now being restored in some fashion or another and brought to our Cottage Hideaway, we are always finding new pieces, so if you like something in our home, lets us know, maybe it can come home with you. Everything is for sale, cause we need the room for more treasures. But don't take without asking, some pieces are not replaceable.
John and Dee purchased this House in 2008
Why John and Dee chose Saint Augustine
Saint Auggie is what Key West use to be, just Paradise, with real beaches. St Augustine offers so much from history, to shopping, antiquing, festivals, and being a avid Concert goer, I have to say that The Saint Augustine Amphitheater is the ultimate concert venue. If you can catch a show there do so, there is not a bad seat in the house. St Augustine is a very friendly town, and having lived in Fort Lauderdale and New York I will say I feel very safe here. That said, you do not want to be stupid, but you can relax.
What makes this House unique
Secluded yet right in the middle of it ALL! The Outside is so tranquil and sunny yet shady, you can feel the beach breeze, except sometimes on those hot August afternoons, but even then, we seem to get a breeze off the inlet because something is causing the wafting smell of baking PIZZA.... into our yard.

This property was ideal for first visit to St Augustine. It was an easy 5 minute walk to the Visitor’s Center where we purchased tickets and took the trolley tour to get an overview of the area. We enjoyed a full day of site seeing and eating and returned to a very comfortable night of sleep. Nice and quiet home with good beds and linens. Also super nice to find complimentary coffee and breakfast goodies. Highly recommend this property.
Tranquil is the perfect description
We were looking for a quiet getaway and this home fit the bill. Very clean inside and convenient to the places we wanted to go.
Idle Awhile was perfect for our short stay in St. Augustine. The house was clean and comfortable with everything we needed. The fenced in area also afforded an outdoor sitting/eating area and the grill was a nice amenity. We brought bikes, but we could easily walk to the old city gate, the fort, restaurants and shops. It was perfect! Thanks to John and Dee for the hospitality.
Perfect walking distance to all locations in St Augustine.
Very clean. Lots of little extras. All that made the trip I’ve to remember.
Lovely little thoughtfulness by owners, extra snacks much appreciated. Perfect location from downtown St. Augustine.
Clean - good location
The house was very clean. The location is excellent as there is a short walk to the Fort and the old city. However, the rental was very hard to find after dark when we arrived and the owners did not respond to texts or phone call. Eventually we found it.
I am sorry you experienced that difficulty. I have checked our messages on the website and see no message from you expressing any difficulty finding our house. I have also checked my text messages and found none from your phone. I don’t believe any of my texts have been deleted. My call history on my iPhone doesn’t go back to February 12. Will you check your call history and verify that you called and texted the correct number? Again I am sorry for your difficulty. As you will recall I knew you were arriving late and left the outside light on for you and provided you instructions on how to reach me after 11pm when my phone is on “do not disturb” mode. Please check the number you used to reach me.
Planning on visiting for The St Augustine for a Parade, you will be perfectly situated, we are the perfect place to be! you can walk the block to the street, or turn the TV up and hide from the world and order pizza.
We are the nation's oldest city, the oldest City that has a beach! …. We are not on the beach but we are walking distance to the Matanzas Inlet. You can see Vilano Beach across the inlet from the Church property. You can walk to Vilano, if you are a marathon walker or runner…2.5 miles to Vilano. I find it to be an awesome bike ride, you will need to be able to traverse and conquer the mighty Unina Causeway Bridge to the beach, my husband would NOT DO THIS, he thinks I am nuts, his ears pop from the altitude when we drive over it, lol, I love this ride, then you can ride north on A1A. You are welcome to bring your bike and helmet. No issues with bicycle parking at the beaches or on our property.
You can drive on some beaches in this part of the state, if it states 4X4 they put the sigh there for a reason, not just because they could not figure out what else to do with it. These are local beaches, great fishing, (you need a license), great vibe, you can grill, you can tan, no pier. Some areas in Vilano Beach are Jet sky and Boat friendly. You can also head north and stop along the way, heading toward Jacksonville, or Ponte Vedra. Or head South From St Augustine and go to Crescent Beach about 25 miles.
On Anastasia Island there is a Pier, an awesome not so “sporty” Beach, many locally owned restaurants dot Ocean Avenue which runs parallel to A1A, this is an area frequented by locals and college students, also a 6-8 mile ride from our Cottage. We are not beach side, we are located in uptown in downtown. The map shows exactly where we are located.
You can also drive on St Augustine Beach. 8 or 9 dollars per day or a non resident season pass is 60 US.
